Hey, this is Arthur from ArthurCundy.com. Welcome. Today we’re going to talk about referral programs and affiliate programs. Are they the same? Are they different? Let’s get into it.

Alright, so referral programs versus affiliate programs. Now, here’s how I look at it, based on what I’ve seen out in the marketplace today. This is how they’re similar and this is how they’re different.

So from what I can tell referral programs are for the average consumer. The average customer, the regular person who maybe doesn’t have a following, is not good at marketing and doesn’t have any experience or anything like that.

A lot of times companies will have both, they’ll have the referral program separate from the affiliate program. So what is the referral program? This is how sometimes it’ll work.

The referral program usually they’ll give you a little bit of money. They’ll say hey, refer a customer who will give you $20, or $15 or they’ll give you a discount on your product or service or will give you more of the service.

So for example, like Dropbox, when, when they were first getting started, they had this referral program where if you refer a friend, you got extra space in your account. And you know, you refer five friends you get, you know, that amount of space five times, right. So they grew very quickly because everyone wanted more space in their service. So if you have a great service and a great product, you know, you could have a referral program where you give, give, give someone you know, a little bit of extra or a little discount On their product or service for referring other people and bringing more people in.

So, and in the affiliate program is usually more robust, you’ll get more money, you’ll get more discounts and incentives, more benefits, more training, more support. And it’s usually just a, you know, a more enhanced version of the referral program. And usually, they’ll have two separate pages on the website where they fully explain what you get for each for each scenario, and so you can read through it I recommend to read through, you know, all the information. Sometimes it’s on the same page, but just read through everything and to fully understand what they’re offering and which one is the best for you.

So if you’re just starting out and you just want to get your feet wet, you just want to dabble in referring customers here and there. You can take part in the referral program, just to see how it is see what you’re you know, if you have a little audience or a little following, you can see, okay, you know is, is my audience receptive to this type of product or service, you can, you know, refer a few people see how it goes. And then you can move on to the affiliate program where, you know, they may have more stricter guidelines.

And so usually on the website, you’ll see referral program or they’ll have refer a friend or tell a friend or something like that. And the affiliate program we will usually say affiliate program or affiliates, or it’ll say partner program or something along those lines. So in usually it’s on the website, and it’s on the footer. So for an example, let’s take a look at Mint Mobile.

All right, here we are on Mint Mobile’s website. So you can see here 15 bucks a month. It’s a great phone service that I have. And they have both a referral program and an affiliate program.

So if you scroll down here on the website, all the way at the bottom, you’ll see they have two links here, refer a friend and become a partner.

So if you click on refer a friend here, you’ll see get a free year of service when you refer five friends. So you just refer five people and you get a free year of ...

Hey this is Arthur Cundy and welcome to Episode 0 of The Entrepreneur Track.

To start let me give you a little background...

My entrepreneurial journey began In 1998, shortly after starting college at 16 at Hofstra University, I became extremely fascinated with web design.
I began teaching myself HTML and Adobe Photoshop.

In November 2000, I launched a web design agency. Four years later, I launched a web hosting business.

Over the years, I’ve worked with Madison Square Garden, WebMD, CBS College Sports, Teach For America as well as a bunch of small businesses to help them achieve their goals.

Things were going pretty good.

However, in life unexpected things can happen.

In 2008, my wife of 3 years passed away due to complications from Sickle Cell Anemia. And, our son was just 2 years old.
So the question is, how was I supposed to raise this boy on my own?

I realized if I was going to be a single parent I needed to get really smart about the way I spend my time and how I earn income. Spending more time with my son became infinitely more important to me.

Just so you know, I’m now remarried, my son is 11 and have a brand new 3-month-old daughter.

But this experience was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. And it led me down a path of looking for more efficient and reliable ways of making money that didn’t involve a lot of time commitment.

Here’s what I believe:

  1. Things can change for you in an instant. You can lose a job, have a huge financial need, need to relocate. You just never know what can happen in the future, and that’s why...
  2. Everyone needs a way to earn additional income. And not just one 2,3,4.. A business, a side hustle whatever you want to call it.

I’m no expert, but I’ve learned a lot.

My mission is to help as many entrepreneurs as I can to create a business that supports your family and allows you to live the life you want.

That’s why I created this podcast.

The Entrepreneur Track is where ambitious entrepreneurs learn the tips, tools, and tactics to stay focused and grow a business that not only achieves your goals but provides for your family as well.

I’m going to be doing interviews, reviewing business and marketing tools that will help you grow your business and giving you my thoughts on current business events.

So look out for the next episode.... And thanks for coming on this journey with me.

One of the ways that I’ve been using to earn additional income over the years is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is referring or recommending a product or service to people. If those people make a purchase, you get paid a commission.

Hi, this is Arthur Cundy from ArthurCundy.com. And in this episode, we’re going to talk about what affiliate marketing is, how does it work, and how you can use it to earn additional income in your household.

Okay, so before I get started, let me tell you a story. So back when I got my start in entrepreneurship, back in 2000, I started with building websites. So I was a web designer, and I created websites for small businesses and large companies and you know, everything in between. And so over the course of building websites, one of the natural things is, you know, after I build a website, you need to get it online, right and so that means I need to get the client set up with a web hosting company.

For those of you that don’t know, web hosting companies, you know, they have a whole bunch of servers, and they charge, you know, anywhere from $5 a month to $19 / $20 a month, depending on what you need. And they have a whole bunch of web servers, and they put your website files on the webserver. And that’s how you get your website, live on the internet for anyone to find it.

And so I wasn’t a web host company. And so what I did was I would look for a web hosting company that I can refer to my clients, based on the type of website that they had, whether it’s ecommerce or maybe a regular basic, you know, brochure website with only a few webpages. And I would refer that client to that web host.

I was doing research and I found a web hosting company that I can refer my clients to. I was like, “Oh, this looks cool.” And when I was looking at their website, I realized that when I refer someone to that company, they would pay me, a one time fee of $60. So I refer someone over there, you know, one of my clients over there, and the web hosting company would pay me $60 for referring them a customer. And I thought, Oh, you know, this is cool, you know, I could get paid for doing something that I was already going to do anyway. And so that kind of piqued my interest. And I got more curious, so I started doing more research. And I found that a lot of the web hosting companies that were out there, they had some sort of referral program where I could refer someone to them and you know, I’m making a little bit of money. And I thought, Oh, this, this must be a thing. And, you know, I got more and more interested in it.

And then I found one particular one that would not only pay me One time, but they would pay me ongoing for as long as that client remains a customer of that web hosting company. And I thought, wow, I could get paid months and years into the future for just referring a client one time. And so I got really excited.

It became so simple to me because I would build a website and refer a customer there. And we just it was just a natural transition, I would say, Okay, great. Your website is done; here’s a great web hosting company that you can get your web hosting account set up with. And they would just go ahead and set up their account and I would get paid ongoing, and I’ve made thousands of dollars this way using just this one technique.

That’s essentially what affiliate marketing is. It’s referring or recommending a product or service to a customer. And when they sign up, you get paid.

Some programs, you get paid one time for just doing that one transaction. And a lot of other ones, you get paid ongoing consistently. So you do the work once, setting up an account for someone, and you get paid month after month, year after year ongoing as long as that person remains a customer. And so that’s essentially what affiliate marketing is. It’s referring customers, referring people to products and services that they’re already looking for. And when they sign up, you get paid.

So how does this work? Affiliate market...
