The Emma Guns Show - Dr Sam Bunting | The Power of Beauty and Mental Health
play

04/03/23 • 72 min

Dr Sam Bunting has been a familiar face on the beauty scene for some time. A cosmetic dermatologist who now has her own skincare line Dr Sam’s, Sam wanted to bridge the gap between medical dermatology and beauty.

But as one of my go-to skincare experts, in my role as a beauty journalist, I’ve also learned that Sam understands the emotional stress of ‘bad skin’. We both suffered terribly from teenage acne and know all too well how much it can impact confidence and one’s sense of self.

It’s these conversations I’ve had with Sam over the years that have led to broader, more deep and meaningful conversations about life, love and much more, which is why I was curious to hear the life lessons she’s learned, the challenges she’s had to overcome and how, as someone who can feel as though the world gets a little too much at times, she copes with the lows as well as the highs.

Dr Sam’s is available now.

The Emma Guns Show - Michelle Visage | The Diva Rules for Your Best Life.
play

06/04/17 • 69 min

Michelle Visage (@michellevisage) joins me on a brand new episode of the show to talk about her collaboration with Illamasqua and the 'Visage Lash', the beauty products she adores and why she's very specific about what she puts on her skin. If you listen to Michelle's podcast What's the Tee with RuPaul and Michelle Visage - and why wouldn't you? - you'll know that Michelle has autoimmune disease and she talks in detail about the lifestyle changes she's had to make for the sake of her health.

In this hour-long conversation with also talk about role as a judge on RuPaul's Drag Race, being an advocate for the LGBTQ community and her own issues with self-doubt. We discuss the burden of being dreamers and why meditation, and specifically visualisation, is crucial if you want your wildest dreams and fantasies to come true - as long as you do it with emotion...

Michelle knows a lot about being on-the-go. When she's not sitting on the judging panel on the Emmy-winning show RuPaul's Drag Race, she's on the road for nine months of the year and Michelle explains the steps she takes to shut off and put boundaries in place so she doesn't burn out.

Tune into Michelle's YouTube channel here to see, among other things, snippets from the Drag Race tour, her Vogueing back in the late 80s and videos from the RuPaul Show that used to air on VH1.

In this episode I share my 'encounter' with a ch-ugger (charity mugger) on Oxford Street, what it was like inside the Space NK Christmas party, why we shouldn't always get excited about the razzle-dazzle of what's new and exciting and why I might film a What I Eat In A Day Video even though I always said I wouldn't.

The Emma Guns Show - Bullet Points | I'm fatphobic?
play

01/18/24 • 14 min

Talking about weight loss and body image is controversial in a way that for me, as someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s, is hard to comprehend. But as someone who has battled their weight for most of their life and now finds themselves having overcome that struggle, I wanted to talk about it. Apparently, that makes me fatphobic. Have a listen to the episode and see what you think...

The Emma Guns Show - Emma Blackery | Is it ever too early to 'have it all'?
play

09/17/17 • 74 min

Listen on ituneslisten on acast Emma Blackery @emmablackery is an award-winning singer-songwriter and author whose YouTube Channel, Emma Blackery, has nearly 1.5 million subscribers. In this episode we talk about her new book Feel Good 101 (available on Amazon and from Waterstones) and how she wrote it as the handbook for life that she wished she'd had in her teens.

We cover the tricky topics of anxiety and depression and how to make sense of them, what millennials are really like, why they get a hard time and the importance of having a focus and goals in life.

My 'digital detox' in the New Forest, which actually involved more social lurking than actually switching off. I went to Lime Wood Hotel & Spa for a night to try to give myself a break from all things work, social media and, you know, routine. I picked the perfect place because Lime Wood really is a place where you can completely switch off and unwind - they've totally nailed that relaxed, no pressure atmosphere where there's never tension or stress in the air. The afternoon I arrived I went for a 'ramble' on one of their many routes in the woods - you just pick up a map from reception and off you go - and it was incredibly restorative, even the bit where I got a bit lost and panicked.

I also allowed myself a wee spot of indulgence and a Nourish by Bamford spa treatment, which was possibly the best treatment I've ever had in my life. Three hours of massage, a facial and reflexology; coupled with my ramble the day before I felt refreshed and restored for the first time in a long while.

Yes, Lime Wood is a beautiful location, but the moral of this story is that sometimes finding a pocket of time and allowing yourself to switch off, and actually acknowledging you deserve it, can be as restorative as a holiday.

My guest is Laura Mathias, the communications manager, campaigner and alopecia awareness advocate. Laura started losing her hair in her early teens and she admits that, as a result, she stopped leaving the house. As she describes it, ‘I completely withdrew and just gave up.’

On Instagram where she’s @relightalopecia, Laura has shared her journey with alopecia because that diagnosis in her early teens led to issues with self-esteem and self-expression. A wig-wearer for years, lockdown changed that when we were all working from home and had the option to turn our cameras off and this was a huge learning experience for her and it’s these learnings she shares in this episode.
