The Durenda Wilson Podcast - College Alternatives: Alert Academy (Podcast 453)
play

09/22/23 • 33 min

We have all been repeatedly told that the traditional college setting is the only path to success but the truth is that it is all but obsolete. Only one of our kids went the college route, but all have been successful with or without college. I have a series of podcast episodes where I interviewed each of our grown kids who shared their journey after high school. (I’ll leave links below.)

This year, I’ve spoken at 9 homeschool conferences and I’ve noticed more and more alternatives being offered for high school graduates so I decided to start a series of episodes I will share periodically called, "College Alternatives"!

My guest today is Colonel Jesse Boulden from Alert Academy!

After this episode, I got clarification on whether there is any association with Bill Gothard. Here is what Alert Academy told me:

Thanks again for having us on your podcast, especially in light of the drama with IBLP and the docuseries. I hope you haven't been getting too much flack on our behalf; I did notice you had to record a story about the whole situation. Colonel Boulden asked me to reach out and give a slight correction to your summary, and a few more clarifying details about our relationship with IBLP.
  1. We were started by Ron Fuhrman, who was on staff with IBLP at the time ALERT was started
  2. We became a separate 501(c)(3) organization in the early 2000s
  3. We still rent our campus from IBLP
  4. We do not use any IBLP materials in any phase of our training, and have not for years
  5. If anyone has any questions about our history or current relationship with IBLP, they can email us at [email protected] and we'd be more than happy to talk to them
Again, I hope you don't get too much heat online from featuring us. Feel free to reach out to myself or Colonel Boulden if you have any questions.
Thanks!

play

09/04/23 • 31 min

Are we actually taking advantage of some of the most important benefits of homeschooling?

This is the third in my series on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of homeschooling (each in separate podcast episodes).

Today we are going to talk about the emotional benefits of homeschooling.

It’s important to raise kids who are emotionally intelligent, but often we don’t realize what a huge benefit homeschooling can be to help us do this.

Listen in and be encouraged!

Are we really taking advantage of some of the most important benefits of homeschooling? This is the second in my series on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of homeschooling (each in separate podcast episodes).

Today we are going to talk about the mental benefits of homeschooling. Most of us are aware that children's mental health (on average) is rapidly declining, but homeschooling gives us an unprecedented opportunity to nurture our children's mental health in the ways that God designed and ways that truly benefit them!

The Durenda Wilson Podcast - Education: Does God Have an Opinion? (Podcast 435)
play

07/21/23 • 41 min

Education is on the minds of parents now more than ever. With the push to teach Critical Race Theory and the LBGTQ agenda, parents are scrambling to make educational decisions that will protect their children. But was there even a day when our education system was neutral? Is this even possible? More importantly, what does GOD have to say about all of this? Have you ever wondered if God actually has an opinion when it comes to education? Do you believe that education can, in fact, be neutral?

The Durenda Wilson Podcast - When Your Teen is Doubting the Existence of God (Podcast 406)
play

04/10/23 • 20 min

Although homeschooling our kids gives us many more opportunities to disciple our children, it does not guarantee that they will embrace our faith.

Often our teens will ask questions or make statements that can invoke fear and cause us to react, but as you'll hear in this episode, questions are actually a GOOD sign.

I had a mom reach out to me recently who was concerned that her teen was expressing doubt about the existence of God. She asked for some advice on how to handle this situation and for any book recommendations.

The Durenda Wilson Podcast - Simple Tips to Help with Anxiety (Podcast 360)
play

10/31/22 • 46 min

Like most moms, I've had countless battles with anxiety over the years, at times it's been debilitating. There are a few simple practices that I keep going back to over and over again. It can be easy to dismiss them because they are so simple, but I have found that consistency is key.

Do I believe feeling anxious is a sin? No. I believe anxiety is a weakness(part of being human) that can lead us into sin if left unchecked and unyielded to the Lord. Today I'm humbly sharing what I've learned over the last 55 years and praying that God will give you wisdom as you listen

The Durenda Wilson Podcast - The Dangers of a Self-Help Culture (Podcast 352)
play

10/03/22 • 35 min

There is nothing wrong with being proactive and responsible regarding our habits and mindset (this is biblical). However, we need to be sure that we are approaching everything from a biblical perspective, and often even Christian self-help books can lead us astray not necessarily intentionally, but because the author isn’t biblically informed and instead may very well base much of their perspective on pop psychology and humanistic/secular thinking.

I invited Wes Johnson back to help us understand the difference between self-improvement, self-focus, “becoming your best self”, etc versus obedience to God and actual fruitfulness.

The Durenda Wilson Podcast - Biblical Submission; The Hot Potato (Episode 350)
play

09/26/22 • 38 min

Biblical submission are words that can bring up a range of emotions and opinions because many of us have heard or experienced the abuses that have surrounded this topic.

As believing women who strive to walk in obedience to God and do our best to live out His standards in our home it’s essential that we have a biblical definition of submission, one that is informed by God’s word and not the culture and we must remember that the family is instituted by God and therefore HE is the only one who gets to define it.

I’ve invited Wes Johnson to join us again because I knew I could trust him to be willing to tackle this topic and do so from an uncompromisingly biblical perspective.
