The Dream Beyond with Nik Tarascio - The Power of Asking Profound Questions with Elliott Bisnow
play

02/08/23 • 35 min

Asking profound questions to people you don’t know is a crucial skill. I haven’t thought about it that much. But Elliott Bisnow highlighted the value of doing it during our conversation. Elliott co-founded Summit Group and Bisnow Media and is a successful start-up investor. Besides, he is the co-author of Make No Small Plans: Lessons on Thinking Big, Chasing Dreams, and Building Community.

This is a meaningful discussion for me because Elliott is one of the most influential people in my life. I’ve always said that my life was one thing before joining Summit events and a very different one after doing it. Elliott’s initiative has helped me open a portal to meet the people that have ultimately become my best friends. So I wanted to invite him to learn more about experiencing fulfillment, setting boundaries when starting a business, and asking profound questions to propel thought-provoking conversations. I hope you enjoy this talk as much as I did.

“I would just recommend everyone do this challenge where they try to ask 90 % questions for one week.” -Elliott Bisnow

In This Episode:

Balancing the go big attitude with being fulfilled

Elliott’s dream and how he achieved it

Setting boundaries when creating your business

Projects closest to Elliott’s heart

Asking questions that propel deep conversations

The world has wisdom. You just have to be open and willing to receive it. The world is also abundant. Allowing the abundance of exuberance that the universe is made out of will let you leave a legacy. It’s not about what you do but how you do it. And it’s also about giving your energy and time to others without a scarcity mentality. These are just some things that I discussed with John David Mann in this episode.

John David Mann is an author who's sold more than three million books. He is a multiple New York Times bestseller, music composer, and cellist. John started his own high school as a teenager, and I’m still trying to process how he did that. We spoke about the importance of following your passions, being open to unexpected opportunities, cultivating an abundant mentality, and how to be a go-giver. Get ready to be inspired.

“All of the best things that have happened to me in my life have come about not as a result of my plan.” -John David Mann

In This Episode:

Having the confidence to start over and over again

Blessings and cursings when following your passion

Being open to unexpected opportunities

Reconciling different interests unapologetically

Creating from light and not darkness

Scarcity mentality around time

Being a listener when connecting with other human beings

Giving more allows you to have more

01/24/24 • 44 min

For most of my life, I was moving fast enough that I could never be bored. Only to find out what was happening was more of an indicator that I couldn't be with myself.

If I had to hear what was happening in my head, it was the worst soundtrack I could imagine. But what if slowing down and allowing spaciousness are the keys to fulfillment?

Today's guest is Michelle Welsch, a writer and business coach who left her life and career in New York City to move to Nepal over a decade ago. What started as a volunteer trip became much more as she founded Learning House, a community learning center.

Michelle shares her journey of self-discovery through living abroad. She dives into the challenges of adjusting to life in a foreign country and culture and how it helped shape her values of patience, curiosity, and giving people permission to be their true selves.

We discuss the importance of dropping expectations and being open to life's changes when moving somewhere new. Michelle also offers advice on building a tribe through intentional values.

I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed our conversation. Thanks for tuning in.

“Fulfillment can be your truest expression of you, however that looks. And it’s not necessarily about what you create or what you build or what you make or give, but it’s just about can you be your truest self? Can you be you completely?” - Michelle Welsch

In The Episode:

-How to strategize for the future

-Allowing space for playing and making mistakes

-Balancing strategy and playfulness

You may have heard the term "inferiority complex." You may even have used it multiple times to describe yourself or someone you know. But do you know its origins?

The term was coined by the often-overlooked yet profoundly influential Alfred Adler. While names like Jung and Freud might be more familiar, Adler was right there with them, shaping the psychology landscape.

In this episode, you'll learn about the fascinating world of Adlerian psychology with our guest, Hallie Williams, a clinical psychologist and Adler Graduate School alum. Hallie introduces us to Adler's transformative theories and shows us how to apply them in our day-to-day lives.

Hallie's expertise in trauma and mental health and his work with at-risk youth and US veterans adds a unique perspective to this conversation. Join us as we delve into the practical application of Adlerian principles, unearthing timeless wisdom that can change your life.

This episode isn't just about psychology; it's about weaving spiritual insights into the fabric of your daily existence.

Get ready to explore Adlerian psychology and embark on a journey toward a more mindful, purposeful life.

“Different than Jung or different than Freud, which focused primarily on just a pathological approach, [Alfred Adler’s] individual psychology helps you figure out a way of living. It gives your life a purpose, or it helps you identify your purpose. And, personally, I think it leads us on the road to happiness.” - Hallie Williams

In This Episode:

-Why is Alfred Adler less well-known than Freud or Jung?

-Adler’s core concepts

-The three tasks that you have to accomplish in your life

-Why we only survive (and thrive) in connection with others

-The true meaning of courage and encouragement

The more you can get clear on your own personal form of fulfillment, the less likely you will compare yourself to others. And one of the ways to get really clear about what you want is by being vulnerable. These are some of the golden nuggets I got from Chip Conley during our conversation.

Chip Conley is a New York Times bestselling author and two times disruptor of the hospitality industry. When he was only 26 years old, he founded Joie de Vivre, which turned out to be the second-largest boutique hotel brand in America. In 2013, he became Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for Airbnb. Chip believes that one of the most valuable things we can do is accelerate our wisdom by cultivating and harvesting it practically and actively. This is what he teaches today, among other skills, at Modern Elder Academy, the world’s first midlife wisdom school. Fame, self-worth, gut instincts, confidence, and the concept of alchemy are other topics discussed in this episode. Enjoy it.

“When you are in a vulnerable state, you get clear on what’s important to you. And when you are getting clear on what’s important to you, you are moving on a path, on a trajectory toward fulfillment.” -Chip Conley
