The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast

Dr. Westin Childs

Do you feel like your thyroid is taking over your life? Are you suffering from symptoms like weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, brain fog, or mood swings? If so, you aren’t alone. In fact, millions of other thyroid patients in the United States and around the world suffer from the same issues. And these issues persist even in the face of normal treatment with thyroid medication! The question is: what can you do about it? That’s exactly what this podcast is about. I’m Dr. Westin Childs (D.O.) a former practicing osteopathic physician and my goal is to help thyroid patients get back to feeling 100%. Well, I actually have 2 goals: #1. The first is to help 1 million thyroid patients directly or indirectly. And #2. To create the most comprehensive and helpful thyroid resource for thyroid patients on the internet. I know just how debilitating thyroid disease can be and I also know that it is possible to take control of your life. One of the biggest problems with thyroid management is that we just don’t talk about it enough. This podcast changes that. We are going to discuss all sorts of topics ranging from thyroid management, the use of less talked about thyroid medications, opinions on emerging treatments and therapies from leading experts, the use of natural therapies and how they fit into the conventional model, and so much more. If you want more information aside from the standard thyroid treatment of TSH and levothyroxine then this is the place for you. We won’t just stop at your thyroid, either. Other topics that are relevant and important to thyroid function will be discussed including things like hormone balance, menopause, testosterone replacement therapy, and weight loss therapies. If something helps you to better manage your thyroid, improve your symptoms, lose weight, or balance your hormones then it’s something I want to include. For more information on me and why I do what I do check out my website here: www.restartmed.com If you have any questions or have a topic you want me to discuss please shoot me an email on my website to submit a request in the "contact" section!

The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast - 9 Surprising Symptoms of Hypothyroidism (DON’T Miss These!)
play

04/03/24 • 10 min

Experiencing symptoms and not sure where they are coming from? It may just be your thyroid. Owing to the fact that just bout every cell in your body has a thyroid hormone receptor, the symptoms of hypothyroidism are vast. And while you may know about the more common symptoms, there are plenty that can easily get mixed if you don’t know what you are looking for. With that in mind, here are some of the most surprising symptoms of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function): 1. High cholesterol Thyroid hormone regulates the elimination of cholesterol. When thyroid hormone is low, cholesterol clearance is decreased which causes a build-up of cholesterol in the body. 2. Menstrual problems Because thyroid hormone impacts both progesterone and estrogen, low thyroid can cause menstrual problems including problems with fertility. 3. Swelling in the legs and in the face Low thyroid function increases mucopolysaccharides in the tissues which pull water along with them. This results in swelling wherever they go. 4. Headaches Headaches may be an early predictor that you are about to become hypothyroid and the same is true for migraines. 5. Mood swings A sluggish thyroid decreases ATP production in the brain which slows down your ability to think and process information. This results in changes to your mood, depression, and brain fog. 6. Dry skin Thyroid hormone acts on eccrine or sweat glands found in your skin. If your body can’t produce enough sweat then your skin will become dry and cracked. 7. Muscle aches and pains Thyroid hormone helps your muscles relax which prevents painful trigger points from developing. 8. Changes to your voice Just about every thyroid patient will experience changes to their voice but it may not be noticeable unless you are an expert. 9. Carpal tunnel syndrome Mucopolysaccharides can accumulate in the wrist which can put pressure on the median nerve resulting in carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve pain. The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast - Decrease Hashimoto’s Risk by 22% With TWO Supplements
play

02/14/24 • 10 min

Want an easy way to reduce your risk of developing all autoimmune diseases by up to 22%? One study of over 25,000 people showed that you could do this with just the use of two supplements taken every day: Fish oil and vitamin D. Link to study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8791065/ Here are some takeaways from the study so that you can easily apply this information to your life and get the benefits: 1. The reduction in autoimmune disease is probably higher than 22%. This is because the researchers could only include people with official autoimmune diagnoses and not probable autoimmune diseases. 2. The benefit from these treatments applies to ALL autoimmune diseases, not just thyroid autoimmune diseases. 3. The longer you take these supplements, the bigger the benefit. The researchers found that the benefit of taking vitamin D was significantly higher after it was already taken for 2 years. 4. Even if you already have an autoimmune disease, there’s still good reason to take vitamin D and fish oil. Fish oil and vitamin D still provide other therapeutic benefits to those who already have Hashimoto’s or other autoimmune diseases. 5. You can probably get even better results by taking more vitamin D and a higher fish oil dose. The doses used in this study can be considered the bare minimum. Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ What is thyroid tunnel vision? Symptoms you have thyroid tunnel vision: #1. You believe that all of your symptoms are related to your thyroid. #2. You are constantly reading and learning more about the thyroid but nothing is helping. #3. You constantly change your dose of thyroid medication without any relief. #4. You focus on relatively inconsequential things such as fillers/dyes in medications. #5. You’ve accepted that you will never get better or get relief. What to do about it? Step #1. Get a full set of lab tests which include MORE than just your hormones. Vitamin B12, Iron, Leptin, Insulin, Cholesterol, CBC, liver function, kidney function, inflammatory markers (autoimmune markers if necessary) Step #2. Don’t neglect your thyroid but focus on other aspects as well Adrenal health, gut health, detoxification measures, lifestyle factors Step #3. Layer therapies on top of each other. Therapies ALWAYS work better when added to each other. This means doing multiple things at once. Diet, supplements, change in medication, exercise, hormones, medications, fasts, etc. Step #4. Be patient. It took years and years to cause your thyroid condition. If you make changes to your medication don’t re-check your lab tests for at least 6 weeks Don’t go by how you feel day to day but how you feel month to month Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - For thyroid hormone production and conversion: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ - For hair loss: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-hair-regrowth-complex/ - For weight management: https://www.restartmed.com/product/gut-bomb-350-billion/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/functional-fuel-complete/ - For gut health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/ultra-biotic-x100/ - For energy and adrenal health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/power-b-complex/ I'm Dr. Westin Childs and I focus on thyroid health, hormone balance, and weight loss. The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast - Testing for Vitamin B12 Deficiency (Order THESE 4 Lab Tests)
play

03/15/21 • 12 min

How to test for Vitamin B12 deficiency. These 4 lab tests must be ordered to check if you have a B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency is INCREDIBLY common and most doctors are NOT testing for it correctly. The most commonly ordered test looking for B12 deficiency is the serum B12 test but this test falls short in MANY cases. While it tells you how much B12 is in the bloodstream it does NOT tell you if your body can utilize that B12. The good news is that there are other tests which you can order which tell you if your body can use your B12 or not. These tests are FAR more helpful than serum B12 and they must be ordered if you want to get an accurate picture of your B12 status. If you suspect that you have a vitamin B12 deficiency, or if you just want to stay healthy, then you need to get these 4 lab tests! Additional tests include: Methylmalonic acid, the MCV, and homocysteine levels. The video explains what these tests mean and how to interpret your results! The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast - Is Hashimoto’s Fatal? (The Answer May Surprise You)
play

06/07/23 • 6 min

Is Hashimoto’s considered a fatal disease? Technically, yes, but the reality is that most people will not die directly from Hashimoto’s. In order for this to happen you must neglect your health and thyroid for decades which is very unlikely to happen in developed countries like the United States. But does that mean you are free from risk if you have Hashimoto’s? Not at all. We know from twin studies that patients with hypothyroidism have a 50% increased risk of mortality compared to the average population and we also know that Hashimoto’s leads to hypothyroidism so this risk is likely relevant to patients with autoimmune thyroid disease as well. But what causes this risk? It’s not from the thyroid itself but from comorbidities that are associated with hypothyroidism. These conditions include: 1. An increase in cancer risk. 2. An increase in cardiovascular disease. 3. And an increased risk of obesity which leads to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and insulin resistance. This may sound daunting but there’s some really good news here: You don’t have to accept this risk because you can completely bring your risk back to normal by optimizing thyroid function. You can do this either by taking thyroid medication or by using natural therapies. #thyroid #hypothyroidism #hashimoto #hashimotosthyroiditis #hashimotosdisease #hashis #mortality Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? If you are like many thyroid patients then you know that finding a good thyroid doctor can be very difficult. You probably know that medications like NDT and T3 can really help and you may even know they are right for you but what good is that information if you can't find a doctor to prescribe them? If you fit into that category then this video is for you! Here you will find tips and tricks that I would personally use to help me find a doctor based off of the information that I now know. If you are a thyroid patient that is suffering then try these tips: #1. Call a local compounding pharmacy and see if you can get a list of names of doctors that prescribed SR t3 or compounded T4 + t3 thyroid medications. #2. Call the office of the doctor in question BEFORE you schedule an appointment. Ask how they treat thyroid patients: Is this doctor willing to order more than the TSH? Are they willing to use Tirosint or Armour thyroid? Will they allow you to use natural supplements? #3. Check the ratings of the doctor to see what kind of experience others patients have had. #4. Use doctor directories from holistic training centers including: IFM (institute for functional medicine) - https://www.ifm.org/find-a-practitioner/ Andrew Weil center for integrative medicine - https://integrativemedicine.arizona.e... A4M - https://www.a4m.com/find-a-doctor.html #5. Ask for referrals in thyroid support Facebook groups. #6. Contact advanced laboratory testing centers and ask for a list of doctors that order these tests in your state DUTCH testing - hormone testing Genova - stool testing Great plains laboratory - organic acid testing ZRT laboratories Cyrex laboratories #7. Look for doctors that write blog posts, host podcast, or create youtube videos. #8. Look for doctors that specialize in anti-aging medicine, bio-identical hormone therapy, integrative medicine, functional medicine, or personalized medicine. #9. The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast - Signs of Selenium Toxicity - Are you taking TOO much selenium?
play

05/16/22 • 9 min

The list of warning signs and symptoms of selenium toxicity. Are you taking too much selenium? Here's how to find out: Selenium is a very important micronutrient for your body. It is included in certain proteins, called selenoproteins, that enable your cells to function properly, reduce inflammation, and produce antioxidants. Many people suffer from selenium deficiency which leads them to use selenium supplements. That's all good but what happens when they take too much? They may end up with minor signs of selenium toxicity. True selenium toxicity is rare, but a slight amount of selenium toxicity isn't uncommon and can occur if you accidentally take too much selenium in your supplements! This is often a problem for patients with thyroid disease because they know that using selenium can help reduce thyroid gland inflammation. Minor symptoms of selenium toxicity include: - Hair loss - Brittle nails - Fatigue - GI problems - Joint pain - Nausea These are more common than the serious symptoms but let's include the more serious symptoms as well: - Neurological problems - Paralysis - Selenosis (selenium poisoning) So, how much selenium should you take? The RDA for selenium is around 40-55mcg per day. My recommendation is 100-200mcg per day. Some doctors recommend 400-600mcg per day (probably only good for a short period of time and to treat very specific conditions). The best way to avoid selenium toxicity is to do 2 important things: #1. Check your supplements for selenium! See if you are accidentally taking too much using the guidelines above. #2. Pay attention to how much selenium you are getting from food (organic versions have more nutrients) Food sources high in selenium include: Brazil nuts, fish, ham, pork, beef, chicken, eggs, brown rice, oatmeal, spinach, bananas, But note that nutrients vary based on where plants were grown/harvested and whether or not they are organic. Do you have any of the signs of selenium toxicity? Let me know! The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast - Are Veggies Harmful For Your Thyroid?

Are Veggies Harmful For Your Thyroid?

The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast

play

04/26/22 • 6 min

Are veggies safe to eat if you have a thyroid problem? The answer for most people is YES. Certain vegetables do contain a potentially harmful ingredient known as a goitrogen. Vegetables that are high in goitrogens can theoretically exacerbate thyroid problems because of how they interfere with the thyroid gland. Goitrogens are substances that block the uptake of iodine into your thyroid gland. If you block iodine uptake into the thyroid gland then you may have issues in producing or creating thyroid hormone. If you don't produce enough thyroid hormone then you may experience low thyroid symptoms as well as a feedback loop that causes thyroid gland enlargement (thus where the name goitrogenic compound comes from). But even though certain vegetables contain these compounds, they often do not contain enough to cause any sort of real issue. Furthermore, you can reduce the content of goitrogens in vegetables by simply preparing them correctly. Boiling or steaming your vegetables will reduce the goitrogenic compounds found in them. Unfortunately, the boiling process does reduce some of the nutrient content as well, though, which should be considered. Even if you are consuming raw vegetables, though, you'd have to eat raw vegetables every single day for 3-5 servings a day to have any sort of real negative impact on your thyroid. Vegetables with the highest goitrogenic value include: Kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, collard greens Some people are also more at risk for experiencing issues when consuming these vegetables compared to others. Those at risk include: People with existing Iodine deficiency Pregnant women and women who are lactating Remember: Don't avoid vegetables because you are worried about goitrogens! Even if they have a small negative impact on your thyroid, that impact is usually dwarfed when compared to the positive impact that veggies have on your body and thyroid. This is especially true if you avoid eating veggies in favor of processed foods. The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast - 5 DAILY Supplements For Better Thyroid Health
play

11/13/23 • 9 min

Taking the right supplements has the potential to dramatically improve your thyroid and either help it work better or prevent future problems from occurring. Whether you’re trying to optimize your thyroid function because you have an existing problem like hypothyroidism or because you just want to prevent a future thyroid problem from occurring, these are, in my opinion, the 5 best supplements to take for your thyroid EVERY day: 1. A daily multivitamin. A multivitamin because your thyroid is incredibly active and chews through a lot of nutrients. The most important include zinc, selenium, vitamin A, iodine, and vitamin B12. A deficiency in any of these may impair thyroid function. 2. Protein powder. Protein powder makes the list because it’s one of my all-around favorite supplements for one reason: it helps you stay on track with your diet. In addition, there’s also a connection between your muscle mass and thyroid function. 3. Omega 3 fatty acids. Fatty acids help to lower inflammation which helps ensure you can make more of the most powerful thyroid hormone T3. 4. Vitamin D3. Low vitamin D is associated with an increased risk of developing hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, AND thyroid cancer. Vitamin D is a no-brainer. 5. A probiotic. A probiotic because that’s the easiest way to support your gut and make sure you can both absorb nutrients and thyroid medication (if you take any). #thyroid #hypothyroidism #hashimoto’s #thyroidsupport #thyroidsupplements #hashimoto Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog?
