Jason's Bio
I am a married father of two kids with multiple physical and cognitive special needs. I lost my 15 year old special needs son and 01/28/22 suddenly and unexpectedly. On that day, my "Letters to Zachary" Facebook blog was born. I decided then to help out others (especially men) deal with the devastating loss of losing a child, the lifelong journey of grief, the emotions associated with it, the mental health aspects of grief, helping to show men that it is OK to open up about grief, and to help women understand how men deal with their emotions associated with grief.

Advocating & educating people about his disability from a young age! with Nick Smit
The Different Ability® Podcast
05/15/24 • 56 min
This episode I'm interviewing my new friend all the way from South Africa! This is the first of many episodes with Nick, he has an incredible story and is doing so many amazing things in the disability world!
Nick's Bio:
A teacher by profession and passion which led him into public speaking, corporate training and disability advocacy. He is part of the PSASA (Professional Speakers’ Association of South Africa), runs two companies - Straight A Tutors and Smergos and launched his speaker brand – The Rebel Ninja.
He believes that challenging life experiences push you as a person; forcing you to either grow to meet the challenges or shy away into their shadows. His greatest strength, and what sets him apart from many others, is his physical disability as a result of a car accident when he was 6 months old. He is a very determined and positive person, perceiving the seemingly impossible as challenges to be overcome. Instead of his disability becoming a weakness it has become an empowering tool.
As an award-winning international speaker and coach, he has presented a variety of workshops and the like, to an array of audiences, including schools, universities and companies. Most relate to disability advocacy, awareness and inclusion; the power of the mind, Growth Mindset and overcoming challenges.
He’s the guy you call when you want to break down barriers and build bridges or maybe if you want to dance some salsa. I give you Nick Smit, The Rebel Ninja

"I'm not done!" with Katie Selby
The Different Ability® Podcast
11/29/23 • 30 min
This week I had the honor to meet and talk with another Katie... just spelt different!
Katie's story is so inspiring, it's a must listen and man she has had so many road blocks (her words) in her life but yet has overcome them / drove right through them and proved to herself she CAN do what she puts her mind to!
Listen in and share with all of your friends and family!
Katie's Bio:
My name is Katie Selby. I’m a person with a language impairment and a learning disability. I was diagnosed with my language impairment at the young age of three and with my learning disability at the age of five. I’m the only person in my immediate and extended family who lives with a disability. I’m unaware of any cause for my disabilities.
I participated in the special education system from the time I was three years old until I graduated from high school. My high school counselor told me that instead of going to college, I should look for work in child care. There were others in my life who advised me against college. I didn’t listen to the people who were deterring me from my lifelong dream. I listened only to those who supported me in making my dream come true.
Although it was difficult at times, I went to college and learned how to advocate for my educational needs. After receiving my college degree, I began working to support individuals with disabilities in the school setting as well as the home setting. I support my students with their goals and help them become as independent as they can be.
I come from a unique social group. All of my friends are people with disabilities. We are not a support group; we just have the same life experiences. About four years ago, I wrote a blog article for “The Mighty” to share my story. Since then, I’ve shared my story on several learning disability social media pages. It feels like I’m sharing my story with the whole world!
