The DFO Rundown - Bobrovsky Steals Game One of The Stanley Cup Final
play

06/10/24 • 53 min

Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli are back with a Monday edition of the podcast as they recapped Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. They broke down how things played out in the series opener as the Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 series lead.

Sergei Bobrovsky was electric, posting a shutout that featured more than a handful of jaw-dropping saves. What can the Oilers do to solve him? Gregor actually noticed some adjustments that the Oilers made.

Frank also shared his major takeaways from each side. For the Oilers, he was impressed with the fact that the moment didn’t seem to big for them. He also liked that they were able to push the pace of the game. From the Panthers side, even though they didn’t have their best game, they got a win. They can be better and they also have the better goalie.

They also talked about the very physical start of the series and how things will continue to play out in that department.

Looking ahead to Game 2, the Oilers could be looking to make some changes with their lineup. Could Vincent Desharnais draw in? Will Head Coach Kris Knoblauch make any other lineup changes? The guys debated that.

Away from the Stanley Cup Final, the big news of the weekend was the Washington Capitals' purchase of the popular salary cap website CapFriendly. With the sale, the site will be shut down on July 5th. Frank talked about what a massive loss this is for not just fans and media, but other teams around the league.

Tyler also swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, brought to you by Wendys.

0:40 - Bob steals Game 1

9:50 - Game 1 takeaways

13:00 - Oilers lineup changes

17:30 - CapFriendly sold to the Capitals

23:30 - Fill in the Blank

29:30 - Jake Guentzal’s rights

The DFO Rundown - The Cup Final is Going Back to Florida
play

06/17/24 • 48 min

The Stanley Cup Final is still alive as the Oilers ran the Panthers out of the building in Game 4 on Saturday night. Frank and Jason kicked off the podcast by talking about the 8-1 beatdown in Edmonton and if the Oilers can roll any amount of this momentum into Game 5 back down in Florida.

From an Oilers perspective, they may have started to figure out how to beat Sergei Bobrovsky and they scored eight goals with a few of their big guns, namely Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman, still staying quiet. They could have more to give but the same could be said for the Panthers, who can likely rely on a much better goaltending performance in Game 5 and have a few of their stars who will be looking to bounceback.

The guys focused in on Matt Tkachuk, who has been very quiet all series. Has he been a disappointment or has he done enough away from the scoresheet to be a factor? The guys debated that and talked about which star players will come through in Game 5.

From there, they got to Tyler and a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked them about the future of Leon Draisaitl in Edmonton, this years free agent crop, and a handful of General Managers in the Eastern Conference who are facing some pressure this summer.

0:45 - Oilers win Game 4

11:35 - Game 5 expectacions

13:40 - Conn Smyth race

28:20 - Fill in the Blank (Oilers extensions, Eastern GM’s, big free agents)

The DFO Rundown - Who Has The Edge in Each Conference Final?
play

05/30/24 • 47 min

The 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs just keep on getting better and better. Both the Eastern and Western Conference Finals are down to best-of-three’s and there has been a lot of drama in each series.

Both Frank and Jason were out in Edmonton last night as the Oilers came from behind to win Game 4 against the Dallas Stars. There were plenty of positives to pull from the victory for the Oilers and on the other side, the Stars were dealt a massive blow as Chris Tanev didn’t play the third period after blocking a shot. Frank talked about how significant that loss could be.

They also praised Head Coach Kris Knoblauch for his timely adjustments ahead of the game.

Out East, the series is tied 2-2 heading back to MSG for Game 5. The Panthers have undoubtedly been the better team but Igor Shesterkin has evened things out and kept the Rangers in a lot of these games. Jason also praised the strong play of Alexis Lafreniere while also talking about how badly the Rangers need their star forwards to find their games.

They also took a look at the coaching market as the Seattle Kraken officially introduced Dan Bylsma as their second Head Coach in franchise history. That means the San Jose Sharks are the only team with a vacancy behind their bench.

Tyler returned to the show for a new edition of Fill in the Blank presented by Wendys. He asked the guys about a couple of the more interesting names that popped up on Frank’s first Trade Targets board of the offseason.

3:30 - Oilers grab momentum

12:40 - Can the Rangers find their game?

20:00 - Benn’s impact & Hintz’s return

25:50 - Kraken hire Bylsma

The DFO Rundown - Ep. 75 - Instant Reaction to the Quenneville News
play

10/29/21 • 46 min

Tonight we got more major news in the NHL as Joel Quenneville has resigned as the Head Coach of the Florida Panthers. Frank and Jason broke down that news and talked about the new interim Head Coach in Florida: Andrew Brunette. Of course, talking about the on-ice product doesn't feel very significant right now. The bulk of this episode was spent talking about the fallout from the Chicago Blackhawks investigation. Not only did they talk about the repercussions of the investigation, but they also talked about Kyle Beach and the courageousness he showed by making his identity known.

The DFO Rundown - Previewing a Potentially Electric Second Round
play

05/06/24 • 51 min

The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs has come to a close and as Frank said last week on the podcast, it was one of the least exciting first rounds we’ve seen in a while. There were only two series that went the distance and a handful ended in five games or earlier.

While the first round wasn’t exactly eye-popping, it’s looking like the second round could be exactly that. Every matchup has some intriguing storylines behind it and there are some juggernaut matchups. Frank and Jason worked their way through the four series and talked about the key factors in each one.

The Rangers are already up 1-0 on the Canes and that’s a series that could very easily go to seven games. The other Eastern series features a rested Panthers team going up against a Bruins team that just finished off the Leafs on Saturday night. Can the Bruins get revenge for last season?

Before getting to the West, Tyler swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, brought to you by Wendys. He asked the guys a couple of questions about round two and one about what the Leafs need to prioritize this summer.

They then got into the two Western series. The Avs and Stars is going to be a grind and is another one that seems destined for seven. We also have an all-Canadian matchup between the Vancouver and Edmonton, which could lead to some serious fireworks both on the ice and online.

They wrapped up the pdocast with some talk about what the Maple Leafs and Golden Knights will have to do this summer.

4:40 - Rangers vs Canes preview

12:30 - The Jack Adams

18:00 - Panthers vs Bruins preview

24:10 - Fill in the Blank

30:50 - Stars vs Avalanche preview

39:05 - Oilers vs Canucks

46:00 - Changes in Toronto?

50:05 - What’s next in Vegas?

It’s a milestone episode of The DFO Rundown as Jason and Frank have reached episode 300 of the show. They kicked things off by talking a little bit about that before getting into the hockey talk.

They started out in Tampa Bay where the Bolts were bounced in five games by the Florida Panthers. The big story there surrounds the future of their Captain, Steven Stamkos. He’s right near the top of Frank’s ‘Top 50 Free Agents’ list but the guys seem to think he’s going to stay put.

That led to some talk about other big name free agents, like Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault, who could be on his way out of Vegas. They also talked about some names lower down the list like Oilers defenseman Vinny Desharnais. That sparked a debate about what the definition of a true second-pairing defenseman is.

From there, they got into the playoff talked about broke down the series that Frank is covering between the Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators. They also hit on the Golden Knights and Stars and the Oilers taking down the Kings for a third straight season.

In this week’s edition of Buy or Sell, Tyler asked the guys a handful of questions relating to the coaching carousel in the NHL.

3:00 - Stamkos’ future in TB

14:00 - Frank’s Top 50 Free Agents

16:00 - The Oilers blueline

24:00 - The remaining first-round series

27:35 - Canucks vs Predators
