Erythema multiforme (EM) is an uncommon inflammatory skin disease. The onset is often very sudden and concerning and can affect the skin and mucous membranes leading to other issues (anorexia, difficulty defecating, etc.).

Cat dermatology is always a bit tricky. They present their allergies in so many different ways that are unique to this species. Oral lesions and asthma are not as commonly seen in allergic dogs, but often seen in allergic cats. Also, the struggle of administering medications to cats which can be more difficult compared to dogs. I always think of cats as little derm aliens... BUT, just because their management is not as straightforward, doesn't mean we shouldn't provide relief.

Since owners are having a hard time getting into their general veterinarian, there is an increase amount of dermatologic patients trying presenting to the emergency veterinary clinic. This can be acute moist dermatitis (“hot spots”), otitis and general allergic itch. Dr. Nell Dalton, DVM (WestVet in Boise, ID) discuss this in this podcast episode. She communicates with owners that life-threatening emergencies take precedent, but she tries to accommodate dermatology patients as much as she can. Knowing these pets and clients are having their quality of life affected by the itch, lesions, etc. This may include collecting diagnostics and phoning the owner later with results or arranging a drop off appointment where the pet can stay in the clinic until time allows.
