It's Friday the 13th, but I hope you'll feel lucky to listen to this fine second set from October 18, 1978.

The second night of the 'From Egypt with Love' run at Winterland, this set features some very strong Drums and Space, highlighted by a guest appearance from Lee Oskar, giving it a decided Egyptian feel. While Jerry flubs the lyrics to 'Terrapin Station' a fine 'Samson and Delilah' more than makes up for it. The show also has a rare set-ending 'Truckin' which is first rate.

I hope you enjoy it..

Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 10/18/1978 - Wednesday Two Bertha [7:13] > Good Lovin' [6:05] From The Heart Of Me [3:48] Ship Of Fools [6:36] Samson And Delilah [8:19] Terrapin Station [12:06] > Playing In The Band [10:#49] > Drums (1) [9:30] > Space (1) [5:58] > Wharf Rat [11:#33] > Truckin' [11:21] Encore I Need A Miracle [4:20#] Comments (1) with Lee Oskar on harmonica, appears at 4:48 into drums.

I so hope that everyone had a warm and happy Thanksgiving!

As is my wont around the holidays, this week I'm posting an acoustic set, one of the most famous of those, this comes to us from the Milkweg in Amsterdam on Bobby's birthday, October 16th, 1981.

From all reports a very impromptu appearance, the boys play on borrowed instruments, yet the boys put out a very fun and engaging performance. While we will listen to the electric set next week, I believe the acoustic set fits perfectly for your holiday weekend enjoyment....

But wait there's more...

Rhino Records and GDP did come through with a few copies of the brand new release celebrating the Fare Thee Well shows of last July, The Best of Fare Thee Well, which is a 2 cd compilation of highlights from the shows in Chicago. I've also received one copy of the final show on July 5th...

You can read all about these fine releases, and order your own copies here.

You may as well take a shot at winning a copy by sending me an email :) my email address for the purpose of this contest is:

[email protected]

Only entries received there will be eligible to win the CDs. You don't have to donate to the Deadpod to be eligible to win, If you do you only earn karma points :)

Finally its most appropriate to thank each of you for listening to the Deadpod each week, for sending me such kind words and in general, making it a joy and privilege to produce this show each week. It is a blessing to be able to share the love present in these songs and have a bit of it reflect back to me.

This week on the Deadpod we have another monumental set from the seminal year of 1974. This week of course from the show in Springfield MA, on June 30, 1974.

Following Seastones, the boys came out with a fine 'China>Rider' a combo often used to good effect as a second set opener. The transition is quite fine. 'Big River' follows and shows the spark it had which made it an excellent second set tune. A stand-alone 'Scarlet Begonias' lets Jerry stretch out a bit next. The meat of this set however is the 'Truckin'>Eyes>Stella Blue'.. as always during this period 'Truckin' lets the boys take things to unexplored dimensions, but the 'Eyes' here is perhaps my favorite. 'Stella Blue' is sung very well also. A strong trifecta of 'Not Fade Away>Goin' Down the Road>One More Saturday Night' closes the set, which even without an encore comes in at just slightly less than two hours.

Grateful Dead Springfield Civic Center Arena Springfield, MA 6/30/74 - Sunday Three China Cat Sunflower [11:12] > I Know You Rider [5:12] ; Big River [5:00] ; Scarlet Begonias [7:52] ; El Paso [4:06] ; U.S. Blues [5:35] > Truckin' [13:22] > Nobody's Fault But Mine Jam > Eyes Of The World [23:47] > Stella Blue [7:15] ; Not Fade Away [10:24] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:34] > One More Saturday Night [4:56]

This week's Deadpod takes us back to the second set of the Grateful Dead's performance at Madison Square Garden on Thursday September 20th, 1990. Not only is the crowd fired up by a great first set, but it quickly apparent that the boys are not about to phone in this set, as it turns into one of the strongest performances of the 90s. They come out of the gate with a strong rockin' Truckin'.. then move into a wonderful China Cat->I Know You Rider.. while Garcia's voice my be a bit scruffy, his leads are bright and glistening.. and when he leads the boys into Rider and wants to be that headlight he practically brings down the house. I may wish that Vince was a little lower, and Bruce a little higher in the mix.. but that doesn't for me detract from the joy of this one.. a bouncy and fun Man Smart, Woman Smarter leads us into.. a nice extended Drums->Space.. a perfectly played sequeway into one of the best, and longest, Dark Stars of the modern Dead era. This is a real treat, and clearly the highlight of the set, if not the run. I love Jerry's interplay with Hornsby here.. It takes us six minutes before that Star crashes... and Jerry's voice has the perfect dream like quality here.. we all want to go to that transitive nightfall .. we follow as Jerry takes us to a Playin' reprise.. but lucky for us they do not escape the pull of that Dark Star.. and we are led back.. and after the second verse to weird and special places.. entirely fitting for a dark fall evening.... the band then finishes the set with a fine Throwin' Stones and a fun Touch of Grey.. after all that they could have been excused if they did a throw away encore but on this night that wasn't to be.. they end with a rockin' Lovelight.. what a great evening it must have been to be there!

This week's Deadpod features the conclusion of the band's performance at McNichols Arena in Denver Colorado on December 14, 1990.

This is a fine, professional performance... starts out with a relatively new song, 'Victim or the Crime', then flows into an uptempo 'Foolish Heart', then 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter'..

The He's Gone that follows flows nicely into a particularly interesting Drums and Space.. then into a reprise of the opening night's 'Dark Star'. The boys flow into a rousing version of 'I Need a Miracle' - assisted by the crowd.. 'Wharf Rat' follows before the set closing 'Turn On Your Lovelight'..

A beautiful 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' closes the set and the run...

Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 12/14/1990 - Friday Two Victim Or The Crime > Foolish Heart > Man Smart, Woman Smarter ; He's Gone > Drums > Space > Dark Star > I Need A Miracle > Wharf Rat > Turn On Your Love Light Encore Knockin' On Heaven's Door

My hope is that this podcast, this music, can bring a little joy and light into your life during this dark and scary time...

This week we'll hear the second set from the band's performance on March 23, 1972 from the Academy of Music in New York City. While it is not as long as that massive first set from last week, I think it is uniformly good. 'Truckin' starts things off, nice tempo, lots of energy. The 'Ramble on Rose' is great.. Pig follows with 'Two Souls in Communion' and we're reminded what a loss was coming when he passed...

'Mexicali Blues' features some nice flourishes from Jerry, then we have the Dark Star.. unique as all Dark Stars are, certainly jazzy and complex. I've read different reactions to this Star, some positive some not so much.. give it your space and see where it leads..

Out of the Dark Star ... Pig gives us the 'Big Boss Man'.. love it..

they close with Not Fade Away>Goin' Down the Road>Not Fade Away.. Bobby goes hoarse from screaming.... :) what a night..

hope you enjoy it..

Grateful Dead Academy of Music New York, NY 3/23/72 - Thursday Two Truckin' [11:13] ; Ramble On Rose [5:54] ; Two Souls In Communion ; Mexicali Blues [3:16] ; Dark Star [24:05] (2) ; Big Boss Man [5:55] ; Not Fade Away [4:04#] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away

Always is a good time for some Good Ol' Grateful Dead- well this is the definition of primal Dead I think... 68 Dead.. Charlie Miller, what more can you want? This is a great Antham-era Dead show, and its possible that parts of this were used on that album.. I'm very fond of the Schoolgirl.. as good ol' Pigpen is in fine form.. This week is a very special Deadpod, as it marks the start of our Winter pledge drive for our community radio station, KOPN 89.5 FM as well as for the Deadpod. Musically, we'll continue where we left off last week - we'll be listening to most of the second set from RFK Stadium, June 10th, 1973. This is truly classic Grateful Dead - Eyes of the World into Stella Blue, a Big River, Here Comes Sunshine and a great Dark Star are some of the highlights of this fantastic set.. In the second part of the Deadpod I talk to Gary McKinney, musician, and author of a new novel, Slipknot, a murder mystery whose main character, Sheriff Gavin Pruitt, is a Deadhead. The novel explores his philosophy -influcenced by the band of course, and a classic confrontation of self interest verses the environment.. Best of all I have ten copies of Slipknot to send out to anyone interested in reading this great novel who makes a contribution to the Deadpod of $20 or more. Just drop me a note and I'll gladly send you a copy - this is a really fun read and I know you'll enjoy it.. (You can find Slipknot on Amazon.com or at http://Kearneystreetbooks.com)Other premiums for this drive include five copies of Donna Jean and the Tricksters new cd, and five concert CDs from Ratdog's summer tour.. I'm also hoping to get at least five copies of the brand new GD cd, Road Trips vol. 2 which features performances from the fall of 1977. If you're interested in these as a premium for your contribution of $50 or more just drop me a note and I'll let you know what I have available.. I really count on and value your contributions and want to thank you in advance for your consideration and your support.. Grateful Dead RFK Stadium Washington, DC 6/10/73 - SundayTwo: Eyes Of The World [21:17] > Stella Blue [8:10] ; Big River [4:#03] ; Here Comes Sunshine [10:32] ; Around And Around [4:59] ; Dark Star [25:43] > He's Gone [14:07As always you can listen to the Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod020808.mp3I hope you enjoy the show..... be well friends!

Here's a request from a friend of the Deadpod from down under... this comes to us from the beautiful Red Rocks Ampitheater, on September 8, 1983. Now I only have set 2 in a soundboard format so that's all I'll present of this wonderful show, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

They come out of the gate with a smokin' Scarlet>Fire, the Scarlet almost has a calypso feel to it to my ears as they start, and Phil is driving that train.. as it progresses Jerry just soars.. this one builds and builds and you don't know how they can stop on a dime like they do and go into that Fire.. then suddenly you're there.. i love Brett on this Fire by the way.. the ensemble is terrific here.

Estimated follows after a full stop here, and makes a fine transition to a delicate Terrapin..

Post-drums begins with an Other One tease, but instead Weir leads the band into an excellent 'Throwin' Stones'. The remainder of this set is very high quality Dead. Don't overlook any of it.

Grateful Dead Red Rocks Amphitheatre Morrison, CO 9/8/83 - Thursday Two Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain ; Estimated Prophet > Terrapin Station > Drums > Space > Throwing Stones > Black Peter > Around And Around > Good Lovin' Encore

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

Here is the second set from the band's performance on March 3, 1981 at the beautiful Music Hall in Cleveland Ohio.

They open with 'China Cat', while Garcia flubs the first verse, he makes up for it with a fine transition into Rider. A rockin 'Samson and Delilah' follows and then a long 'He's Gone'. The Drums section is particularly potent here, leading not into a long Space but instead into a 'Sailor>Saint' combo. The 'Black Peter' that follows is very soulful indeed. They close the set with 'Good Lovin' then return for a 'Casey Jones' encore.

Grateful Dead Cleveland Music Hall Cleveland, OH 3/3/1981 - Tuesday Two China Cat Sunflower [10:56] > I Know You Rider [5:48] > Samson And Delilah [7:35] He's Gone [16:33] > Drums [12:41] > Lost Sailor [6:42] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:08] > Black Peter [10:31] > Good Lovin' [8:13] Encore Casey Jones [5:19]
