Solar-Powered Brew
The Brew Daddies sit down with Founder Justin Cox and Head Brewer Daniel Vilarrubi from Atlas Brew Works in Ivy City DC. Atlas Brew Works is a solar-powered production and distribution brewery, open since 2013, and was the first of its kind in DC!
Over the last six years, Atlas has refined their beers, targeted specialized consumers through unique releases, and developed a pilot system to test different tastes before mass-producing them. Atlas is well known as a major host to heavy metal concerts in DC and their unusual beer-centric urinals for male patrons.
Adam, Richard Justin, and Daniel discuss how Atlas was able to get their beers into Nationals Park and establish a partnership with the team. And the big news: At the beginning of 2020, Atlas will be opening a second production brewery with a taproom on Half Street, just a block from Nats Park, allowing them to experiment, try new recipes, and get feedback from baseball-loving patrons. Justin and Daniel share details of what is to come in the future for the Ivy City brewery and the new Navy Yard location.

Sankofa brings West African flavor to DC Beer
The Brew Daddies visit with Head Brewer Kofi Mero from Sankofa Beer Company. Kofi explains that his brewery is a bit different from most in the DC area because they brew using ingredients that originate in West Africa. Sankofa’s flagship beer, Hypebiscus, is a pale ale that has hibiscus as an important ingredient. Kofi and The Brew Daddies discuss the challenges and reason behind the company’s choice to start by contracting their brewing rather than establishing their own brewhouse.

Liz Garibay and Dr. Brian Albert talk about beer history
In this special episode, Mike Stein sits down with Liz Garibay and Dr. Brian Alberts, two beer historians. Liz specializes in Nineteenth-Century beer and alcohol history and is the Founder and Executive Director of the Chicago Brewseum, a museum that focuses on the history of beer. Brian specializes in the Nineteenth Century brewing industry and German immigrants’ effect on it. The three discuss common misconceptions that surround the brewing industry and its history; everything from the amount of beer that was consumed in the Nineteenth Century to the Prohibition Era. Additionally, they chat about links between Chicago and the DC area, from a beer perspective - the first president to brew beer while in office was President Obama! As promised, here are the recipes.
