The Cycling Podcast - S7 Ep173: Ellingworth takes the wheel at McLaren

S7 Ep173: Ellingworth takes the wheel at McLaren

11/08/19 • 68 min

The Cycling Podcast
In this episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe review some of the biggest stories from the past week in professional cycling.

After 14 years, the Tour of California – the biggest stage race in the USA – is taking a hiatus. What does this mean for racing in America – and does Peter Stetina's decision to quit the World Tour in favour of gravel events such as Dirty Kanza suggest the sport is heading in a different direction?

Richard reports back on his trip to McLaren HQ in Woking, where he met Bahrain-Merida's new boss Rod Ellingworth and asks him about signing Mark Cavendish and reluctantly seeing world time trial champion Rohan Dennis leave.

We also discuss Filippo Ganna's world record-breaking four-kilometre individual pursuit ride in Minsk.

And as the medical hearing into the conduct of Dr Richard Freeman – former doctor for both Team Sky and British Cycling resumes – we discuss the implications of Dr Freeman's admission that he'd lied about the delivery of testosterone to British Cycling HQ.

S7 Ep174: Remembering Poulidor

The Cycling Podcast is currently on a theatre tour but Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie, François Thomazeau and Orla Chennaoui recorded this week's episode a few hours before taking to the stage at Worcester's Huntingdon Hall.

They discuss the latest developments in the General Medical Council's hearing into former Team Sky and British Cycling doctor Richard Freeman, and Shane Sutton's extraordinary appearance before he stormed out. We also hear from The Telegraph's Tom Cary, who has been at the hearing.

François reflects on the death of Raymond Poulidor, who finished on the podium at the Tour de France eight times without ever winning the race or even pulling on the yellow jersey. Poulidor's grandson is Mathieu van der Poel and so his legacy lives on in the peloton but how will France remember the man they nicknamed the Eternal Second?
