Ahoy me hearties, weight anchor and lets be off!

We look at the life of one of the most amazing but forgotten men of the 1600s, William Dampier. Ever curious he was an explorer, navigator, naturalist, writer and so much more. The author of A New Voyage Around the World, his accounts opened the world to the public. Never before had people experienced such exotic locations from their own homes or had such detailed descriptions of the world beyond their shores. From stories of raids on Spanish settlements in the Pacific to first setting step on the shores of Australia his vivid accounts were a world first. He inspired Charles Darwin, Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift, Alexander von Humboldt and many more. Sadly his more lawless acts would lead him, in the eyes of some, to be little more than a common pirate but we hope to show you just how wrong this is.

The Curiosity of!? Podcast - 18: 💨 A load of hot air, science and history of farts
play

08/11/20 • 29 min

Since the last episode Anton has turned 10 so as a little treat and a sign of his new levels of responsibility he selected the topic for this show. We’ll not reveal it here but it’s fun and maybe a tiny bit rude but still full of science, facts and history! Anton also has a lovely birthday message from the Flatpack History of Sweden podcast and we even had some fan art! Don’t forget we now have a website curiosityofpod.com and are on Twitter @curiosityofpod

The Curiosity of!? Podcast - 25: ☕ William Le Lacheur and the transformation of Costa Rica
play

02/04/21 • 38 min

After its independence in 1821 Costa Rica was a poor nation with very little outside trade but one man, from a small island halfway around the world, would change that. William Le Lacheur, born 1802, was a merchant and sea captain who is widely credited with transforming Costa Rica’s economy through the coffee trade. Commanding a fine fleet of ships he would not only bring trade to a nation but also help educate it’s citizens, help pull them from poverty and help fight off American filibusters. This episode we tell the story of this remarkable man.

The Curiosity of!? Podcast - 37: 🏰 Anton Investigates: Norman Castles
play

03/01/22 • 37 min

This episode Anton takes the lead as he explores the development of Norman castles in the British Isles. Whilst fortifications dotted the English landscape long before the 1066 Norman invasion nothing quite like their castles existed before. Anton and I talk about early motte and bailey fortifications that offered only rudimentary protection to vast concentric circle castles like Beaumaris in Wales that dominated the surrounding landscape. What did they symbolise? How did they change? And are they the origin of IKEA?!

https://www.intelligentspeechconference.com

Here’s what they say:

CROSSING LINES

We chose to make the topic for this year’s Intelligent Speech conference, Crossing Lines, as it seemed to not only resonate with our times but also with what we hope Intelligent Speech 2022 will represent through our range of speakers. This year’s conference will be cross-curricular, we will have speakers who have crossed over from being podcasters to being authors and vice versa, we’ll be crossing continents, we might even have stories about crossing over and crossed lines.

Where lines cross are junctures and our era certainly feels like a major juncture in time; at Intelligent Speech 2022, our speakers will be exploring other times when lines have been crossed in one way or another.

Intelligent Speech 2022 will take place on Saturday, June 25 at 10 am EST (New York)/3 pm GMT (London). There will be eight hours of great presentations from up to 40 different content creators from the worlds of podcasting, YouTube, and media. Each session will be 40 minutes long.

The Curiosity of!? Podcast - 26: 🐂 Oxen, more than just ‘unintact bulls’
play

03/21/21 • 31 min

In possibly our most uncomfortable episode yet for Anton we talk Oxen! In school history lessons they just seem to turn during the agricultural revolution to help with crop rotation and then disappear. But what exactly are Oxen, how are they used, where do they come from and what is their history? We travel the world to answer all these questions.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

Both my son and I are keen podcast listeners and he wanted to try making one and I wanted to sneak in extra eduction or just having conversations with him about different topics. Since those early days it has grown a lot as we’ve developed and learnt.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

We hope they learn something new that sparks their curiosity and makes them want to delve deeper. But we’re happy if they simply enjoy the fun we have making the show.

Which episode should someone start with?

One of newer ones. I really like our history of magic where we learn about magic through the ages and even try some recreations. As the topics we cover are broad look for one that may interest you or just dive in for a surprise!

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

I enjoy any where we recreate what we’re talking about or record on location. I also really enjoyed our chocolate episode - it’s not the best content but I got to eat a lot!

Which episode are you most proud of?

Tough question. I am proud of different episodes for different reasons. Our first ever episode, Anton was young and we recorded live from inside a 4500 year old dolmen. We’re talking about folklore and he spontaneously starts recounting an old tale, it was great as a dad. I enjoyed our perception episode as it contains experiments you can do as you listen - it was a tough one to pull together live whilst recording. History of magic - it was just great fun to record and has a good mix.

What is your vision for your show?

Just keep producing content and finding the quirky in the mundane or showing how everything is connected. I’d love to do more interviews too.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

Right now I am loving The Rest is History.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

We were The Curiosity of a Child at launch as my son was young and we wanted to have a childlike curiosity about the world. Now he’s older we shorted it to the Curiosity of!?

Tell us a bit about yourself

We’re a father and son team who make a podcast from a small island. My son is still in school and I own a design, branding and web agency, I love science, history, design, nature and how everything effects everything else - I still have my childlike curiosity and I am hope to encourage others to keep it too.
