Jonestown or the cult formally known as Peoples Temple was the location of the mass murder-suicide of 909 members of the California -based cult at the direction of their charismatic but paranoid leader, Jim Jones.

The Manson Family was a cult led by Charles Manson that was active in California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The group consisted of approximately 50 of his followers who lived an unconventional lifestyle with use of hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD. Most of the group members were young women from rough backgrounds, who were drawn in by the promise of family by Manson's teachings and drawn by hippie culture and communal living.
