
Caribbean Sustainable Energy Outlook with Dr. Devon Gardner

On this episode Dr. Devon Garner, Head of the CARICOM Energy Unit outlines the importance of energy to Sustainable Development. Climate Change is the dark side of fossil fuels and the Caribbean remains one of the most vulnerable to its impacts. Traditional sources of energy in the form fossil fuels burden the region's economic, social and environmental systems. It is imperative that the region transforms its energy systems to become sustainable and resilient. For the region to sustain itself it requires energy that is clean, affordable and accessible. The Caribbean must tap into indigenous sources of energy, and where feasible, deploy technology to harness the wind, solar geothermal and hydro resources that are available. This requires judicious evaluations as solutions must be tailored to the unique Caribbean context. Dr. Gardner provides insight on the region's progress in implementing is Sustainable Energy Roadmap (C-SERMS) as well as his projections for the post-pandemic reality.

Wanting to be closer to the impact of her work on end users Dagmara Avanindra pivoted her career from designing graphic systems and networking equipment in Silicon Valley to implementing renewable energy projects in the Caribbean.
She recognized Sustainable Energy as the way to go and answered her calling to help make islands energy independent. Dagmara was drawn to the island of Aruba which was the first in the region to set a national target for renewable energy. Although falling short of its ambitions target for 100% renewables by 2020 much has been done to advance the island's sustainable energy transition.
Dagmara's company, DAVA Energy Solutions Limited and her involvement in non-profit organizations are focused on making the best decisions for ourselves and the planet. She shares her experience implementing change in island energy systems. Dagmara promotes transparency between Utilities, Regulators and Consumers as key to accelerating the rate sustainable energy project development. When implementing change we have to be ok with making mistakes. There is shared value from the challenges faced by first movers which can be applied to other islands in the region at varying stages of their sustainable energy transition.
