This week we take a look back at the Hellraiser roundtable discussion where we compare the 1987 original Hellraiser and the 2022 remake, highlighting their respective storylines and themes. Hellraiser 1987 takes us on a twisted love story intertwined with supernatural elements, while Hellraiser 2022 immerses us in a dark and mysterious contemporary party. Both versions offer their own take on Pinhead and the Cenobites, capturing the essence of the Hellraiser story.

In the 1980s, Pinhead was a British dude with pins in his head. While his appearance was certainly unique, his character didn't strike fear into my heart. Maybe it was the voice that just sounded too masculine and normal. It lacked that eerie distortion that I expect from a horror character. Plus, let's be honest, I've known people who look like that guy in real life.

But fast forward to the modern day Pinhead, and it's a whole different story. The design is more horror chic, and it genuinely terrifies me. The new Pinhead looks alien, otherworldly. I appreciate that they moved away from the fully BDSM style and embraced a more androgynous aesthetic. In this new portrayal, Pinhead is genuinely creepy as fuck, and that's exactly what I want from this character. It's a refreshing take and a departure from the original, but in a good way.

Whether you're a long-time fan of Hellraiser or new to the franchise, our podcast offers a comprehensive exploration of the original and remake, Pinhead's character evolution, and the importance of trans representation in film and television. Join us as we navigate the dark and twisted world of Hellraiser and delve into the depths of its impact and legacy.

In the movie 'Cloud Atlas,' there are six interweaving stories that span from the 1800s to a far post-apocalyptic future. Each story takes place in a different time period and setting, but they all follow the same structure. From an enslaved man in the 1800s who struggles for freedom to a futuristic world where primitive tribesmen fight for survival, the common theme of breaking free runs through each narrative.

Throughout the movie, we see characters trying to break free in various ways. In the first story, the Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing, the protagonist finds himself caught in a moral conundrum and eventually becomes an abolitionist, advocating for freedom. This theme is repeated in every story as characters strive to be free or reveal the truth. For example, in the story of Frobisher, his pursuit of freedom ends tragically with suicide, highlighting the desperation some face in their struggle for liberation.

Overall, 'Cloud Atlas' explores the human soul's desire for freedom, emphasizing the inner fire that exists in each individual. While the characters may be living different lives in different times, they are all driven by the same longing for freedom. By highlighting the pursuit of freedom and the cycle of mistakes, 'Cloud Atlas' offers a thought-provoking exploration of the human experience.

The Cinedicate: Film & TV Podcast - REVISITED - Jordan Peele's Filmography - Inside The Mind of a Horror Icon
play

08/08/23 • 178 min

In Jordan Peele's filmography, from "Get Out" to "Candyman," he skillfully weaves horror, social commentary, and symbolism to create compelling narratives. "Get Out" tackles racial tensions, commenting on cultural appropriation and prejudice, while using the sunken place as a metaphor for silenced voices.

In "Us," Peele explores duality and identity, using doppelgängers to represent our hidden, darker aspects. The film delves into societal divisions and the idea of being our own worst enemies. Peele's directorial style consistently employs symbolism to provoke deep introspection about contemporary issues.

With "Candyman" (produced by Peele), the exploration of racial trauma through the urban legend bridges the past and present, highlighting the cyclical nature of violence and oppression. The film serves as a reminder of the haunting impact of historical injustices on modern society.

Through his films, Peele demonstrates his ability to blend horror with thought-provoking social commentary, leaving audiences engaged and reflective long after the screen fades to black.

For many of us, The Muppets hold a special place in our hearts. From The Muppet Show to the classic films, they have brought joy and laughter to countless households. Heather, one of the hosts of WSTR, shares her own experience growing up with The Muppets. Being the youngest in her family, Heather was exposed to movies that were perhaps a little too mature for her age. But that didn't stop her from falling in love with The Muppets.

The Muppets Christmas Carol has always stood out in the sea of Christmas Carol adaptations. As Heather explains, many versions struggled with the limitations of technology and budget, finding it challenging to bring the story's supernatural elements to life. However, The Muppets' Christmas Carol defied expectations. Not only did it capture the essence of the classic Christmas tale, but it also pushed the boundaries with its high production value. The visuals and special effects were impressive, creating an atmosphere that wasn't just merry and bright, but also a little spooky. And let's not forget about the performances. Michael Caine, who played the leading role, approached the film with utmost seriousness, despite the presence of singing and dancing Muppets. This balance between silliness and seriousness is what makes The Muppets Christmas Carol a timeless classic that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.
