Ass-Kicking With Limitations, with Lisa Lewis Miller

When working with capable, high achieving folks on making a bold career transition, there's a common stalling out point that pops up. It's the tension between ambition — the desire to keep pushing, hustling, and growing — and rest. So many of us get to the top of our industry, organization, or game by constantly achieving... but it also leads to burnout, exhaustion, adrenal fatigue, and resentment. The thing we love (and get energy from) can also become the cause of our plateaus or roadblocks.
It can then feel like a chicken-or-the-egg trap: I don't have time for rest because I can't rest if I'm going to achieve my goals; but if I don't rest, I'm going to burnout or become less productive and slow down. When we help people create careers they love here at Career Clarity, we want it to be on their own terms in order to be sustainable and healthy. And those terms almost always need to include more time for rest and active recovery.
On this episode of the podcast, I talk about the different kinds of limitations or boundaries on your life, setting specific goals, and defining how to sustainably "thrive" instead of just survive. You can still keep kicking ass and achieving if you do it in a more strategic, creative, and boundaried way.

Creating a career on your own terms with Yuri Cataldo
The Career Clarity Show
04/06/21 • 48 min
For full show notes, go to GetCareerClarity.com/Episode92.
When we think about what careers should be, what we are told they're supposed to look like when we are kids growing up, we’re told that careers are supposed to be linear. They're supposed to be stable, one defined thing and you're going to do that for the next 40 years of your life. And so many of the people who find the Career Clarity Show, just don't buy that.
But the problem is that while intellectually, and in a heart level, you don't buy that you have to be in one job for the rest of your days, It can be really hard to find the role models and examples of people creating career paths that are more risky, or more creative, but are absolutely more meaningful and more fulfilling more growth oriented. On today's episode of the podcast, I am really excited to get to share with you the story of Yuri Cataldo who is distinctly doing this career thing on their own terms and has lots of cool, exciting stories to share.

Navigating Career Changes Into (or Out Of) The Government Sector with Elyse Levine
The Career Clarity Show
11/09/21 • 44 min
For full show notes, go to GetCareerClarity.com/Episode131.
One topic that we have not talked about often, maybe ever, on the Career Clarity Show is navigating, trying to get into or get out of the government sector of jobs. Now, this is an area that is near and dear to my heart, because I spent the first part of my career and launched this business back when I was living and working in the Washington DC area. And when you are living in that part of the country in the United States you are going to meet lots of people who are federal employees. Then again when I moved out to Colorado, I found that I was still meeting lots of folks who are working in local and state government in different capacities, and some who are wanting out. And other people who are really wanting to feel like they were having a deeper impact in their careers, but who are currently in the private sector, who were looking for ways in.
Navigating your way into or out of government as an employment source is tricky. It does not look like any of the things that you have learned if you have been exclusively job searching in the private sector. Or if you have been in government for your entire career, making the pivot back to civilian life is going to look really different in terms of how you talk about yourself, how you position yourself and what activities you do.
I am so excited to have Elyse Levine, host of the Career Switch Podcast, to help me dig into all of this information. A serial career switcher herself, Elyse has worked at storied institutions, including the FBI and Disney in roles spanning social media strategy, project management, human resources, board governance and professional speech writing.

For full show notes, go to GetCareerClarity.com/Episode126.
Welcome back to the Career Clarity Show! We are talking about a topic that in the 100 plus episodes of the show we have never covered before: Parental Leave.
Because when we talk about career clarity and finding a path that feels like it truly fits you, one of the biggest pieces of that is the life that you want to have. It's not just about the job you're doing, or the responsibilities that you have on your job description. It's about how your work enables you to live the life that you want to live. And for many of us that life includes a family.
So I am so excited for us to talk about the topic of parenthood, parental leave, and making work work for you. Dr. Amy Beacom and Sue Campbell, authors of The Parental Leave Playbook, are here to share their expertise.
