The Business of Thinking Big - Raising Your Standards With Lesley Wong

Raising Your Standards With Lesley Wong

Episode 18 – Raising your Standards with Lesley WongIn this episode I speak with Lesley Wong, a very talented interior designer, who shares her inspiring story about how she went from burnt out to booked out in less than 8 months. When I met Lesley in the fall of 2018, she and her business were stuck. She was working 16 to 18-hour days, and while she had many clients, they weren’t necessarily her Dream Clients. She had no work life balance and her family her sense of self and her business were all suffering as a result. Lesley joined my Dream Client Formula course, and the rest (as they say) is history. Lesley explains that how as a solopreneur she was literally chasing her tail. She was accepting work from all potential clients whether they were good or not. She wasn’t being selective, she was doing too much for too little and was headed for burnout. So often business owners (especially service providers) end up running out of hours in the day. In order to grow a business, it takes raising your standards. It’s okay to say no to work that doesn’t allow you to shine in your business. It’s also very important to get clear on what you are actually paying yourself. In fact, Lesley dove deep and was embarrassed at what her per hour rate actually was. She realized she wasn’t valuing her time and abilities and charging the right amount of money. This was one of the first (in a series of many) changes that she made over the next few months. In that moment of clarity; Lesley committed to raising her price and her standards. She describes it as an “Ah-Ha!” moment. Another big change for Lesley was learning how to let her confidence shine through. She practiced her sales conversations over and over until they became less awkward and difficult. This made it so much easier when the time came to speak with a new potential Dream Client. By purposely choosing the right kind of client, she’s now using her time a whole lot more efficiently. It has been life changing for her and her family. By saying no to the clients who are not a fit, she is opening the door for the ones who are. Lesley is an authority in her field, speaking at home shows and enjoying new multi-million dollar projects. Now she is now enjoying renewed confidence, both personally and professionally. The Business of Thinking Big - Taking Massive Rapid Action With Nicola Holmes
play

04/18/19 • 57 min

Episode 16 – Taking Massive Rapid Action with Nicola HolmesThis episode is all about taking massive rapid action in your business. Nicola Holmes, one of my favourite clients, is a Life Coach. She and I discuss the journey she took from feeling stuck as an entrepreneur, and not knowing what action to take next, to having a diverse practice working with clients she loves. All in the space of 8 months. After 10 years of 1:1 coaching, Nicola felt she had been nurturing a hobby instead of a business. New clients were attained through word of mouth instead of marketing and communication strategies. She was emerging from the weeds of being a new mom and was longing to make a career as a life coach. Enter Marie Forleo’s B-School program, which laid a great foundation for marketing new business. Nicola learned so much but still couldn’t figure out how to put it all together. Nicola quickly realized that sometimes we just can’t expect to know how to do everything or know everything within our business, and that yes, sometimes even coaches need coaches! We started working together and Nicola now says the fit was great because she needed my strength in sales and marketing, so she could attract new business and focus on what she does best. In entrepreneurship, when you feel like you have an area that’s holding you back the worst thing you can do to is to run from it. The best way to handle it is to tackle it head on, make it your focus, your mission to overcome it. Hire an expert in that field - the best you can afford, one who will teach and nurture you. When looking to level up from B-School, Nicola made the leap of faith and became one of my coaching clients, in order to grow her business. For Nicola, the stakes were high. She has 2 young children at home and needed to bring in an income along with her partner. She required the clarity she needed to help with sales, marketing and business design. Her new motto? “It’s go time, baby!”Advice for listeners who need to make a big bold move: Encourage everyone to be brave and embrace the willingness to take the big scary risks Don’t undervalue the importance of community Surround yourself with people you admire and who support youUnderstand that in order to live it, you have to give it! Figure out what you aren’t strong at, and be open to receiving the help you need to overcome. At the end of the day it’s so worth it to go for our dreams and our goals. Nicola is a living, breathing example of what is possible. The Business of Thinking Big - Creating A Brand That Stands Out In The Crowd With Laura Beauparlant
play

04/04/19 • 45 min

Episode 14 – Creating a Brand that Stands out in the Crowd with Laura BeauparlantIn a noisy online world, small business owners are always looking for ways to stand out. In order to get attention, we need to be that that smiling face in the crowd! Tune in to hear a lively discussion between myself and Laura Beauparlant filled with tips on how to brand your business and grow your following on social media. Laura Beauparlant of Lab Creative talks about her strategies for branding small business. She explains how every journey is different and filled with so many things, that it’s never static. Through her own journey, Laura has found her voice, and she has honed how to attract the right client. Her mission? To make branding and design accessible to every business owner; to be value packed and affordable. Laura gets the most joy helping the small business owner who is passionate about what they do and why they started their business. Entrepreneurs must get back in touch with the “why and how” to reach those clients that they are meant to serve. Laura describes her “Common Thread Approach,” which is further explained in her book “Brand Chemistry.” Once you figure out what the “common thread” is between all your dream clients, you build it into your brand, then focus on reaching them. Biggest mistakes that people are making in branding:Consistency; Or a lack of! Laura invites everyone to pull up their social media, website and marketing materials. Make sure that the formatting matches, meaning that everything is consistent in style, colour and fonts. Current photos; Pictures you post of yourself on social media should be current, so if you were to bump into someone who follows you they would recognize you immediately.Key Ingredients for a killer brand:Consistency; It’s how you answer the phone, the quality of the products and services you offer, and how you represent yourself on social media. Authenticity; In a world where there is less and less human interaction; you need a brand that is real, visible and authentic. It has to be something that you are proud of and confident in. Clarity; Who do you want to serve and why?Handles; Do your social media accounts and domain name match in name and style? The Business of Thinking Big - Getting Media Attention for your Business with Jennifer Singh
play

03/21/19 • 37 min

Episode 12 – Getting Media Attention for your Business with Jennifer SinghJennifer Singh is a TV reporter turned Media Coach. She works exclusively with women entrepreneurs and small business owners to help them get media exposure for their products and services. Jennifer started working as a reporter at the age of 18, at CTV in Scarborough. She explains how as a general assignment reporter any story can be thrown at you at any time. It teaches you to be very agile, being able to turn nothing into something. Often, she would go to an assignment that she knew nothing about, then have to quickly turn it into news. She knew that being a reporter was not something that she wanted to do for her whole life, in the back of her mind she knew she would make a shift at some point in her life. Jen and I talk about how there’s not enough representation of females in media, she would like to help to amplify the female voice, and there’s no time like right now with everything that’s happening in the world. Her number 1 mission? To help women amplify voice and be their authentic self. She is the expert at helping female business owners pitch their business to the media, her clients routinely get on radio and television and are invited to podcasts. Jen’s clients have been featured on The Social, Global News, CP24 Breakfast Television, CBC Metro Morning (radio show), and CTV News. Many of the small business owners she’s worked with didn’t know where to start or knew the full power of media. With her history as a reporter, Jen has become so in tune with what the media wants, she is able to pitch the story to the right news cycle, she often knows what topics are trending, she uses this as a tool for writing her pitch. Everyone has a story to tell; you just need to know how to figure out how to connect it to the news cycle.Should we be using our media features as our content? Yes! We should be sharing the audio clips and videos as content to help us grow our brand and build our credibility online! This exposure acts as double duty; do one interview then share it on multiple social media platforms. Traditional media sources were radio, TV and print. Modern media is now social media; our audience is not always able to tune in live, which is why sharing it on social media has become so important. A client of Jenn’s had an interview with CTV, which CTV then shared on their FB page; the video was viewed over 10k times in 3 days. Getting into the media isn’t as hard as people think it is! The Business of Thinking Big - Creating An Audience Of Raving Fans With Brittany Young
play

03/14/19 • 39 min

Episode 11 – Creating an Audience of Raving Fans with Brittany YoungWho is your target audience, and what do they want? Do you know how to get them to buy from you? In this episode I talk with Brittany Young, creator of Certified Celebrator who sold 400 tickets in only 8 minutes (and crashed her own website and the ticket website while doing it)! Tune in to hear how she did it. Brittany Young is a mom and a Certified Celebrator. Her business, Certified Celebrations, teaches busy Mom’s how to be “intentional” about celebrating and building family memories, all on a realistic budget. Her mandate is simple, to be intentional about celebrating and creating a joyful home for families. Starting out Brittany quickly realized that building authentic relationships required targeted content. Once she targeted the working mom of elementary school kids, she was surprised to note that a new audience emerged, the Grandma’s! She learned that by building an audience of raving fans she had to let go of the people she didn’t want to serve and focus in on her target audience. Her advice for someone just starting on social media? Pick one platform, develop relationships there and master it before adding a new one. Rachel also talks about how her mindset changed. She speaks about how she needed to bring and share what she had so her followers would become clients later on. Be visible and don’t be intimidated, be your authentic self and your target audience will only want more of you. Find your excitement, when you love and are passionate about what you do; you can get excited easily, so dig deep, share and enjoy. Our discussion ends on being authentic and real – how much is too much? If there’s something your audience likes, then use that to keep them inspired and interested. Just be you, and let your personality shine through. The more you, you can be, the easier it will be for the right people will find their way to you.
