Time to get spooky this holiday season with a review of Goodreads 2020 Best Horror Winner, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Louisville Jess gives us a quick rundown of the book and tells us why her Chris thinks she should have been the last person to read the book.

Your hosts give you their take on sequels and whether Mexican Gothic would be a good book to write a sequel for as well as why most Disney sequels end up being the worst.

Also on the show, the Jess’s discuss the homework the Portland Jess gave them during last week’s episode. Watch Dear Christmas on Lifetime and you won’t want to miss it because these ladies have some OPINIONS.

The Bookish Roundup - A Podcast - Ep 14 - It Must be Fate and Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur

Welcome to another Outta Five Stars episode! Originally published November 10, 2020 and currently has a solid 4 stars on good reads! Both Portland and Louisville devoured this #OurVoices Romance novel. This was the first LGBTQ novel we had ever picked up and honestly we were mostly excited to read about a place that we've already been, but was pleasantly surprised us and we found ourselves getting into the growing connection between our main characters. Louisville Jess puts it well, “it’s getting everything wet!” Thanks for tuning in! We would love for you to subscribe and leave a review.

The Bookish Roundup - A Podcast - Ep 9 - Pack Your Bags Bitch, We're on The Guest List - Part 1
play

01/20/21 • 45 min

Content Warning: Heya listeners, we just wanted to give ya a heads up about this episode. This book touches on the topics of self harm and as that character plays a big part of the story we do bring this up. We hope your bags are packed- cause this week we’re on the Guest List! Both Jess’s picked this book up this week and really dove into this mystery thriller which will be a TWO parter! In the first part we discuss the characters and setting for this dark wedding. The Guest List was compared to Agatha Christie a lot when it first hit the shelves and we think it lands more in the mystery less thriller section. We see more Liane Moriarty Big Little Lies vibes than Agatha Christie Murder on the Orient Express. All the ingredients are there for Portland Jess, we’ve got a spooky old island in Ireland, a wedding, a who done it and more! Portland Jess got this as her FIRST audible book-which made a confusing timeline even harder for her to understand. But at this stage in the book Portland Jess isn’t seeing the thrill in this thriller-perhaps after consuming the second half of the book we will see if it made it to Portland Jess’s standards. Louisville Jess talks about the groom party and how much they all act like children. Are these men obsessed with their youth or was there something more ominous about their time as students. Louisville Jess read a physical copy of the book and also had a hard time following the timeline, especially when chapters don’t have numbers. Thanks for tuning in! We would love for you to subscribe and leave a review. Find us at www.outtafivestars.com Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok we're @OuttaFiveStars Music: https://www.purple-planet.com

The Bookish Roundup - A Podcast - Ep 6 - Jessica's Aren't Britney's or So We're Told in Open Book
play

12/30/20 • 43 min

Alright alright, we know it’s not chicken and this memoir proves it in her first book and New York Times Best Seller, Open Book. Jessica Simpson gives us a peak behind the curtain of her show biz life and upbringing and your hosts rate the men in Jessica’s life. Spoiler, we are canceling John Mayer now.

Jess and Jess talk about why they enjoyed this book, even though they weren't huge Jessica Simpson’s back in the 00’s. And get into some southern lingo (Neekid according to urban dictionary and Louisville Chris that is another way to say naked)

Also Portland Jess tells her engagement story that has more easter eggs than a Taylor Swift music video.
