Questioning the water we swim in & teaching our kids to do the same
The Bold as Love Podcast
11/06/18 • 24 min
We take for granted the things that we think we already know (about ourselves, about others, and about the world around us), but for anyone who's familiar with the ways in which we can suffer from the the beliefs we hold that limit us and keep us from our growth and expansion, we understand why it's important to open ourselves up and to take in new perspectives and new ideas. We could all benefit from some healthy skepticism about the beliefs we hold and the stories we tell ourselves and pass on, without awareness, to our kids. It can be difficult to challenge “what we think we know” because so many of our ideas have been with us for a long time and were often shaped in the earliest part of our lives, but we can learn to leave the door open to new perspectives and we can teach our kids how to do this as well. It’s an empowering way to get started in life

BAL005: Slowing Down, Anxiety & The Rhythm of Things
The Bold as Love Podcast
10/16/18 • 23 min
This is the time year when the natural slowing down of the world around us can be an invitation for us to slow down with it. But that's not easy for many women who are neck-deep in the culture of doing. There’s a kind of trauma to everyday life in the modern world. The busy-ness of our minds reflect the hurriedness of our lives. Even when we’re in a calm environment, the mind can be a madhouse of activity. This experience alone - of not having the time and space to digest the many experiences we have are one thing, but when they also happen to people living in a state of disconnection (from themselves), well, this situation gets increasingly challenging. It’s as if you'd eaten something, and then, instead being allowed to digest what you’ve just eaten, you keep eating and eating...until you’re in a state of overwhelm and anxiety. And without the ability to slow down, it's hard to ever break the cycle. Slowing down, while scary, invites us back into a relationship with self and life that has a rhythm we can dance to.

(On My Mind) Working with our kids' fear
The Bold as Love Podcast
11/28/18 • 13 min
The other night, when my daughter felt afraid of a house fire after an apartment block caught on fire in our little town, I realized quickly that trying to talk her out of her fear wouldn't be helpful. Like many of our fears, the level of fear she felt didn't match what was actually happening around her and it was keeping her awake. The limbic-based experience of fear is one of feeling trapped and without choice and a path to safety. So I decided to get creative and together we worked with her feeling of fear in a way that helped bring her imagination and creativity online. In this mini-episode of the podcast, I'll share how I did that and how the experience helped her to regulate her own fear response.

BAL 001: The Bold as Love Mother
The Bold as Love Podcast
09/25/18 • 19 min
Welcome, mama, to the Bold as Love podcast! I'm Karine Bell, and I'm a mama on a journey of motherhood I, honestly, never anticipated. It's challenged me like NOTHING else has, but it's been probably one of the most powerful avenues I've ever traveled for waking up and growing up to my life so that I could parent the way I most deeply wished to. But, more than that, I've realized how, on this journey, I've also given birth to an entirely new experience of myself in this life, and for that I could be more grateful. My work is focused around what it means to claim your ability to author your own life experiences and also to become empowered to break with the momentum of past conditioned patterns and learning to make way for something new for yourself, and for your children going forward. We're creating a new legacy through the work that we do to be awake to our lives, and this has the ability to impact future generations. This is the introductory episode where you can meet me and hear a little about my motivation for starting this podcast. I hope that it serves as a source of education, inspiration, and perspective-shifting reflection to help point you in the direction you want to go and add fuel to your desire to go there.

Self-Regulation (and being a grown up)
The Bold as Love Podcast
02/28/19 • 40 min
What does it mean to grow up? This question has driven my own search over many many years to find an answer. It doesn’t have to do with chronological age. To grow up, for me, is to take responsibility for our own well-being in such a way that we can regulate our internal states and emotions. We can learn to have an embodied sense of safety that comes from knowing how to guide ourselves back into balance when we get triggered in life. This happens automatically for a child who experiences co-regulation (when a parent helps a child regulate their stress responses and emotions), but for so many of us, that didn't happen. Our own ability to help our children depends a lot on our ability to do this for ourselves. And it's never too late to learn.
I have a couple of practical resources to share with you today as well. You can find them here!

Embodying the Soulful Chain Breaker - Part 2: Unlocked: When We Access a Desire Greater than Fear
The Bold as Love Podcast
01/23/23 • 31 min
The Chainbreaker as archetype invites critical questioning and reclaiming. We are invited to consider disappointing our families of origin, and the cultural influences at large by rejecting narratives and dictates that reproduce harms. It’s risky, even, for those most marginalized in these narratives. Yet in this risk we open to a vital rebirth: the opportunity to access desire long hidden or dampened by chains and obstacles. If we imagine our inner and outer worlds as a map; not one shaped by imposed borders but rather a map that authentically reveals the contours we trace in our daily living and loving. What would we see? What is shaped by inheritance? How does desire move in this geography? Where are you located in this story of change that is both personal and collective? Desire as creative impulse roots in the energy and action of fire: warming, illuminating, consuming, and transforming. There is a font of desire - distinguished from forms of desire shaped by culture - rooted in a deeper order of life, residing within each of us, that is the fire that propels deeper-level transformation.

Embodying the Soulful Chainbreaker - Part. 3: The Spirit and Science of Change Work
The Bold as Love Podcast
01/26/23 • 25 min
Many experiences of trauma/oppression reveal where we’ve failed to belong authentically. The ways in which, as we navigate our social worlds, we come up against blocks and barriers to birthright dignity, authenticity, acceptance and belonging. That is, where we disappoint and fail to conform to the expectations of dominant cultural narratives. This rejection dampens our inner spark, disorients our desire, and erects borders and checkpoints in our interior world that prevents the wild rambling and roving that is our birthright and is necessary for wellbeing. This non-belonging is also a portal to a re/imagination of how else we might live. Often unconscious to us, our experiences within culture shape the ways we’re oriented in the world; influencing the neurophysiology of our bodies, our emotions, perceptions, and beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world. On this shared journey the Chainbreaker illuminates the borders and checkpoints - the chains - that limit the free expression of our own unique hearts. The Chainbreaker archetype offers a way to embody fire-based courage so that we may see clearly the impacts of dominant familial and cultural narratives and a path to liberate ourselves and the generations that will come after us. What appears to us as evident in a field of infinite possibility is influenced by our early experiences embedded within family systems and culture. This email explores the spirit and science behind change-making and chain-breaking. And it asks the question: What can we learn from our bodies that the broader culture tries to bury? In this email, we’ll also offer guided reflection practice on what trauma has made way for in your life.

On the push & pull (and what I'd love to burn)
The Bold as Love Podcast
04/11/19 • 22 min
I'm experiencing a bit of a rebellion lately. And it's not a problem! It's all part of an organic process we can experience as we move through life. Whether or not we're aware of it, we're constantly receiving guidance from the body in the form of a "push or pull"; that, if we learned to listen (not from the mind but through awareness in the body), we'd realize there's a path unfolding before our feet that we can follow. As much as we can appreciate guidance from the outside, ultimately it's all helping us (if we let it) clarify our own path.

On Walking Away
The Bold as Love Podcast
04/04/19 • 23 min
An (on my heart) episode riffing more on the topic of parentification and what it means to walk away from that dynamic with a parent. We're thwarted in our development when we stay in this dynamic as adults; doing a disservice to ourselves, but also often to those we seek to rescue (and be responsible for) as well. Speaking for myself, I could never become the mother I wanted to be until I was able to do the work to reclaim myself from that dynamic.
I've had quite a lot of people reaching out about this particular episode, so if you'd like to go deeper into this topic (and how to change this dynamic) let me know over at: karinebell.com/share

Embodying the Soulful Chainbreaker - Part 4: Cycles of Fire: Imagination and our Maps
The Bold as Love Podcast
01/27/23 • 15 min
On our own, the desire born from the challenges we’ve faced can be a powerfully transformative force in our lives.
Our personal embrace of the Soulful Chainbreaker becomes a cultural force when we gather together, commune, share stories, and support each other to commit to and sustain the journey. We do not disrupt and re/orient within a vacuum, other beings dedicated to this process become our co-conspirators and co-creators of new experiences and new future(s). Rooted in the experience of our non-separation we might find greater access to our creative life energy and imagination to become newly oriented in the world, to create new maps and pathways of belonging.
