KENYAN BODYBUILDING STORIES
NB: We do apologise for the sound quality; we would have loved to have had everyone in the same room! However due to Covid that was not possible. We hope you don't mind the odd matatu, chicken call and zoom glitch! In this episode we are joined by some of Kenya’s top bodybuilders. We welcome Iron Shaffi, Sheetal Kotak, Mikhala Barasa and Joseph Oyatta. We wanted men and women representing each category in bodybuilding to tell us their story. We find out how and why they got into bodybuilding , where they’ve competed, their future plans and the challenges they face being bodybuilders. It was a fascinating conversation highlighting so many issues from mental health , to sexism, prejudice , corruption and finance . Bodybuilding takes incredible determination, discipline, courage and sacrifice. These men and women take us through it all. Bodybuilding is still young in Kenya, often misunderstood and lacking a solid, supportive Federation. However Sheetal, Shaffi, Mikhala, Jose, Andy, Leon and myself show how it’s thriving and growing and that amongst its small community their is huge support, knowledge and motivation!

In terms of training and achieving goals we discuss how the one thing that could be letting you down is your recovery! Stress is so interlinked with sleep and recovery, we go into the role o Cortisol and what happens when we live in an chronic state of stress. In this modern world sleep is being seriously compromised by technology, stress, diet and social drug use. We end with some strategies and apps you can use to help prioritise recovery, track your sleep and balance your circadian rhythm. The sleep app we recommend, which is free: Sleep Cycle.
