Penn State football opens its 2022 home game slate on Saturday at Beaver Stadium against Ohio. To get you ready for the game, publisher of Blue White Illustrated Sean Fitz and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss the important storylines heading into the weekend.

Bauer starts the show with the news that Fitz is joining the BWI Daily on Thursdays, moving forward to bring his insider knowledge to the show. The duo wastes no time doing precisely that. Fitz and Bauer start the show discussing what they observed at Penn State's open practice on Wednesday night, including the status of several Nittany Lion defenders who were absent last week in the win against Purdue. They also share what they saw with Jaylen Reed, who was injured in the final drive of the game on Thursday.

Next, they shift gears to what players they're excited to see play on Saturday. Some of them, such as freshman quarterback Drew Allar, made an appearance last week, but Bauer and Fitz are keen to see more. Speaking of making an appearance, the duo also are eager to see more from Abdul Carter, who was ejected on his first defensive play for a questionable targeting call in the first half of week one.

Next, they discuss the running back rotation and which freshmen other than Carter and Allar they hope to get a better look at on Saturday.

From there, Fitz previews what Penn State is facing on Saturday by giving fans an overview of the Ohio Bobcats. Then, he breaks down the offensive and defensive standouts for the team and his thoughts on their top players.

Finally, he delivers the key matchups that Penn State needs to win to win the decisive victory that fans are looking for. For the Nittany Lions' defense, he focuses on how to stop Ohio quarterback Kurtis Rourke, who is likely the team's best player. Fitz was impressed with Rourke's skills in week one and highlighted how to stop him.

Offensively, he thinks this is a game that Penn State could get a very important and elusive part of their attack up and running. But, ultimately, he and Bauer agree that Penn State should have a hugely successful day, given their score predictions.

Penn State football takes on Iowa in the 2023 White Out game this evening in Happy Valley. Even the weather is getting in the spirits for this Big Ten clash, with rain and chilly conditions forecast for the game. But what's going to play out on the field this evening?

Join the Penn State Football Tailgate Show, presented in conjunction with Seven Mountains Media, starting at 4:30 outside the Bryce Jordan Center, across the road from Beaver Stadium. Former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins joins the show to discuss the game and give his insights into the matchup between Penn State and Iowa. Catch the show on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel or locally on 99.5 The Bus in State College.

On today's show, we'll discuss Penn State's offensive plan and how they should attack Iowa and how the defense can counter the Hawkeyes ground attack.

Penn State vs Iowa has deep roots.

As Penn State head coach James Franklin noted earlier, there's a history between his team and Iowa over the years.

"First of all, it's almost like opening on the road in the Big Ten. We played Iowa more than anybody. Maybe you could make the argument part of maybe the best team in the west over our team here at Penn State. You could make that argument."

But despite Kirk Ferentz's long-standing tenure at Iowa, Franklin is quickly climbing the rankings of veteran Big Ten coaches in his tenth season at Penn State. Consistency like this could breed a great game or complacency. Franklin says that evolving is necessary, but not at the cost of your identity.

"I think that really starts with two things, and that's hiring and recruiting, making sure that you're hiring the right people in the building and recruiting the right people into the locker room, and that you're transparent with them on what they're signing up for," Franklin said earlier this week.

"Then saying, Okay, they have to understand how to blend within the culture and align kind of with the identity, but then also allow a Manny Diaz to be Manny Diaz and play to his strengths and allow his strengths and experiences to add value to our overall organization, be able to have Drew [Allar] that we talked about, bring him into our organization. Like we talked about maybe a week or two ago, not put restrictions on Drew that it limits his development and his ability to be a unique player."

Both Diaz and Allar will be central figures in today's show. Join us live and in person or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel in the live stream!

Penn State lands in Arizona

Penn State arrived at the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday evening to begin the weekend festivities. However, head coach James Franklin made it very clear that his is not a vacation for his players.

"We're really not approaching this like a bowl game. This is a playoff game, and I wanted to make sure that our players understood the differences. We're not coming out here for a week, and enjoying the community for a couple of days, and then getting into work. This is a business trip. I want to make sure our guys understand that. It's really been good so far," Franklin said.

We'll discuss the other aspects of the initial wave of quotes and notes that have come from the trip so far. Fitz will also discuss the odds and ends from the recruiting front since our last show on Friday.

Game Preview and predictions

Finally, we'll give our preview of the upcoming game between Penn State and Boise State. We'll break down the key matchups on both sides of the football and give our thoughts about which ones we think will determine the game. Finally, we'll give you our final score predictions.

Penn State takes care of SMU by forcing mistakes

In the Big Ten Championship game, Penn State was the team that made mistakes and turned the ball over. The script flipped on Saturday in the win over SMU. The defense forced three first-half turnovers on interceptions of Kevin Jennings, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Linebackers Dom DeLuca and Tony Rojas fueled a 28-0 first-half surge from the Nittany Lions that put the game out of reach.

The Penn State offense had another sluggish and uneven performance. However, they did enough to complement the defense in the win. The ground game got going with a 25-yard touchdown run by Kaytron Allen in the first half. Overall, it was still a quiet day for the running backs, who failed to crack 100 yards on the day.

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team faces off against SMU on Saturday in the first round of the College Football Playoff. The team hosts the Mustangs on what's expected to be a cold, windy day at Beaver Stadium. Today, we'll give you our predictions for what we think will happen this weekend. We'll also give you the latest portal and recruiting news from experts Sean Fitz and Ryan Snyder. Join the show live at 10 a.m. on YouTube or catch the replay embedded in the article below, on the channel or wherever you get your podcasts!

Penn State Recruiting Update

It's a slow time of year for recruiting, with all but the last bits of Penn State's recruiting efforts in 2025 wrapped up. The portal is open, but the closer we get to game day, the fewer nuggets there are. However, Fitz and Snyder are the best in the business and still have some interesting tidbits to share on the show. Snyder spoke with 2026 wide recevier commit Jerquaden Guildford this week to understand why he pulled the trigger early on Penn State. He'll share parts of that interview and what his inclusion in the upcoming class represents.

Next, we'll discuss Penn State's open practice from Wednesday night. The team opened the doors of Holuba Hall for the media to get a brief glimpse of what was going on between the lines for the Nittany Lions as they prepared for SMU. We'll discuss some takeaways from practice and then discuss some of James Franklin's comments afterward.

Transfer portal

We've discussed the transfer portal daily on the BWI Live show this week. There have been several updates since our last conversation on Wednesday morning, including news about the team's first signee, wide recevier Kyron Hudson. We'll relate that update to you and also discuss what we know about linebacker Kendal Daniels and his potential fit with the program.

Penn State vs SMU game preview and predictions

Of course, the most important event on the calendar for Penn State is the game this weekend. The team has worked since January for the right to play in the College Football Playoff, and that starts on Saturday at noon. We'll preview the game from both sides of the football and give our score predictions to end the show. Join us live and put your thoughts and score predictions in the live chat. We'll answer your questions and give your takes throughout the show!

This week, Penn State Football hosts another round of official visits for the 2025 recruiting cycle. It's another chance for the program to put it's best foot forward and potentially secure a high-level commitment for the team's 13-player class. So, who is attending? We're discussing that, plus so much more, on today's BWI Live Recruiting Show.

Join us at 10 a.m. on YouTube to discuss how the month's recruiting efforts are going, including prospect camp updates and commitment trackers for the players linked to the program.

Now's a great time to subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. We'll have to break commitment news when it happens, an analysis of each player's skills, and more! Join us at 10 a.m. today to kickstart your Penn State Football recruiting newsday!

Penn State targets off the board

We'll start today with the news that two official visit targets have committed to other programs. Five-star linebacker Zayden Walker committed to Georiga on Wednesday and shut down his recruitment before the Nittany Lions could get him on campus for an official visit this weekend.

Earlier, cornerback Graceson Littleton committed to Clemson shortly after visiting Happy Valley for his OV to start the month. How big of a blow are these misses for the program? We'll briefly discuss these topics to start the show.

Official Visit Weekend Preview

Despite some of the setbacks, Penn State still hosts an impressive list of talent this weekend. Here's the list of players traveling to campus for the second official visits extravaganza.

Kainoa Winston

Phillip Bell

Jayden Woods

Jeff Exinor

Jarquez Carter

Matthew Outten

Nolan Davenport

Josh Johnson

Amory Hills

Rashad Johnson

Recruiting experts Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz will discuss this group, which players stand out, and why. We'll also review the feedback from last weekend's crop of players, including top cornerback prospect Brandon Finney, Cedric Works, and more.

Prospect camp review and preview

There's a crush of recruiting information at this point in the cycle, so we won't get all the news and information you need about today's show. That's why it's so vital that you subscribe to Blue White Illustrated and get the info from Synder and Fitz. With two prospect camps last weekend and two more scheduled for this coming one, over 500 prospects are heading to campus in a calendar week.

So, which names do you need to know? Our experts review the performances from last week and preview the upcoming camps to discuss the important players to Penn State's recruiting efforts in 2026 and beyond.

The Penn State Nittany Lions are on a bye this week, which means the coaching staff is out on the road recruiting. More importantly, the team's final stretch to convince top recruits in 2025 to join the program is here. In just a few weeks, the team will host Ohio State, followed by the annual White Out game. We preview the upcoming recruiting push on today's BWI Live Recruiting Show. Join lead experts Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz as they discuss the important landmarks along the way to the early signing day in December.

Join the BWI Live Recruiting show every Thursday at 10 a.m. on YouTube or catch the replay on the channel, our site, or wherever you get podcasts. The best way to get in on the action is to subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel so you can interact with Snyder and Fitz when we're live on YouTube!

The final word on Penn State flip Josh Johnson

Penn State flipped three-star cornerback Josh Johnson from Louisville on Monday evening after missing out on his commitment in the summer. While we've discussed Johnson's decision in-depth this week, we'll revisit the topic one final time. On3 Director of Recruiting Charles Power spoke with Snyder this week about Johnson and what he sees in the commitment. We'll review his thoughts.

Speaking of Power, the latest On300 update for the Class of 2025 came out recently, and there was plenty to discuss among the players in the class. We'll review who moved up and down in the latest update as the class rounds into its final destination in early December.

Coaches on the road

The bye week means that there's more time to recruit. But with new rules curtailing the number of days that college football coaching staffs can be on the road, how much will the group be out in force? We discuss the latest news and what our experts can share on today's show.

But the bye week isn't the most significant event on the calendar to end the 2024 season. November is just around the corner, and with it, two of the most essential home games on the recruiting calendar. Penn State hosts Ohio State on Nov. 2 and then Washington for the White Out on Nov. 9. Snyder has been talking about these games since the beginning of the year, and today, we'll take a more extended look at the team's recruiting lists he's confirmed so far.

Penn State Wrestling Show: Intrigue heading into the NWCA All-Star Classic

The Blue-White Podcast: A Penn State Athletics Podcast

play

10/17/24 • 15 min

An all-new episode of the Penn State Wrestling Show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! The Nittany Lions sit one month away from starting their 2024-2025 regular season with Drexel on Nov. 17 at Rec Hall. Of course, there is plenty for host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel to cover in the leadup to that.

This week's episode starts with a look at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Defending 285-pound NCAA champion Greg Kerkvliet, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at heavyweight, was set to face No. 3 Nick Feldman of Ohio State on Nov. 16 at Rec Hall. However, Iowa State announced Wednesday that its own heavyweight, No. 6 Yonger Bastida, would be facing Feldman instead. Flo Wrestling, which runs the event, quietly updated its bout sheet to reflect that the Cyclone is replacing Kerkvliet but has otherwise said nothing about the sudden change.

Last year, Clay Clarson of South Dakota State was scratched from the exhibition event, sat out the first six weeks of the season due to injury, and was never right during the 2023-2024 season. Conversely, Levi Haines and Jacori Teemer also both scratched off of last year's original Classic bout sheet. But, they both wrestled all year, and Haines beat Teemer, then of Iowa and now of Arizona State, in the NCAA finals. But, they withdrew after the Journeymen Classic, not before. With all of that said, PSU posted a photo of Kerkvliet wrestling hours before this news broke. And, he has been frequently featured on the team's social media account.

With no concrete news to share on Kerkvliet's status moving forward, Pickel and Carr discuss what it all might mean moving forward.

Allar has another methodical night

Once again, Allar's passing stats weren't explosive, with only 166 yards passing, but the sophomore quarterback tossed four touchdowns in the game. Allar completed 68% of his passes as the Nittany Lions kept things short and controlled.

The Penn State running attack wore down another opponent with 46 carries before the backups came in the game. Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton combined for 38 carries and 121 yards in the competitive portion of the game. Penn State head coach James Franklin called his shot earlier in the week about how the game would play out.

"I also think in the Big Ten you look at statistically, we play good defense around here. There's going to be games where we've got to grind it out. You guys know Iowa. This is probably going to be another one of those games where we're going to have to grind it out. It's going to be a four-quarter game," Franklin said on Tuesday.

The problem for Iowa, was that Penn State was the only team dong the grinding. The Nittany Lions had four drives of ten-plus plays and another drive of eight plays, all resulting in points. The offense was unrelenting, going 4-4 on fourth down.

Penn State defense snuffs out another opponent

Once again, the Penn State defense set the offense up for success by smothering the Iowa offense. After an opening drive of six plays for 24 yards, Iowa didn't register another first down before Iowa put in their backups in the fourth quarter. The Penn State defense five straight three-and-outs with two fumble recoveries bracketing that performance.

Curtis Jacobs, Adisa Isaac and Chop Robinson all forced a tackle for a loss during the game, with Robinson registering his first sack of the season and Isaac putting up his second.
