The Bix Show Episode #3 – Doug Gilbert
The Bix Show
04/15/15 • 82 min
Doug Gilbert, who’s been everywhere from Memphis to Bill Watts’ UWF to WCW to the Savoldis’ ICW to the Global Wrestling Federation to ECW to the WWF, joins the show this week. We cover everything from the Brad Armstrong Memorial Show to growing up in a wrestling family to who he learned from throughout his career to why Lance Russell is the best wrestling announcer ever among many other topics. There are some technical issues thanks to cell phone reception that hold us back for a few minutes, but that’s over with quickly and it turns into a really awesome conversation.
Doug’s upcoming schedule:
- April 17th & 18th Popcon in Evansville, Indiana
- April 18th w/ Jerry Lawler & Brian Christopher in Albion, Illinois for Strictly Insane Wrestling
- May 15 Corinth Mississippi at Crossroads Arena
- May 16 Nettleleton, Mississippi
- May 22 & 23 in Cleveland for AIW’s JT Lightning Invitational Tournament
P.S. MMA fans stay tuned for some kind of ridiculous, time constraint free podcast thing w/ Patrick Wyman previewing this weekend’s UFC on Fox: Machida vs. Wyman that’ll be coming before Saturday.

David Bixenspan (or is it David Kaleidoscope?) and Dylan Hales finally return for an all-new episode of The Trade Marks in which we discuss:
- The launch of NWAClassics.com.
- Whoo! Wrestling’s triumphant return with the release of the A.J. Styles vs. Jimmy Rave match.
- Hulk Hogan’s legal entanglements with Gawker, which somehow gets us sidetracked into the Silver Ant saga.
And probably more we forgot about.

For the third episode of The Trade Marks, Dylan and I are joined by Kevin Kleinrock, currently the President of Masked Republic (which owns LuchaShop.com – Use coupon code BIX to get 10% off all items!) and formerly the Vice President of XPW and Big Vision Entertainment to talk about the rise and fall of DVDs in pro wrestling.
We cover a ton of relevant topics including lots of background on VHS and the home video market, what the move to DVD improved for everyone, the mainstream DVD boom, how WWE helped condition fans, ROH and Smark Video Video’s places in the market, how getting indies into retail worked, the collapse of the DVD market, and what the future holds. Lots of great discussion here.

The Bix Show Episode #5 – Kris Zellner
The Bix Show
05/06/15 • 121 min
Wrestling historian, Exile on Badstreet podcast host, and all-around good guy Kris Zellner joins the show to have a loose, sometimes disconnected conversation about old newsletters and other elements of wrestling fandom like radio shows, tape trading, the early days of the internet...and whatever tangents we go off on. Longer episode than usual, but this was a LOT of fun.

The Bix Show Episode #4 – Sean Wheelock
The Bix Show
04/29/15 • 71 min
Sean Wheelock, the voice of Bellator MMA, joins the show to talk about growing up as a wrestling fan in Kansas City in the ’80s, including seeing Ric Flair’s first NWA World Heavyweight Title win live at Memorial Hall. We also talk about MMA, including topics related to “Is This Legal,” his book with Art Davie about the creation of the UFC, as well as intersecting topics like the effects of the death of kayfabe on pro wrestling, shoots and double crosses, what pro wrestling moves work in reality, and more. Sean is a lot of fun and I can’t wait to have him back on. Also make sure to check out Let’s Get it On, his podcast with the dean of MMA referees, “Big” John McCarthy.
P.S. I know some listeners aren’t big MMA fans, but there’s a good bit of wrestling content first and most of the MMA content here has pro wrestling overlap.

For the second episode of The Bix Show, we’ve got two different guests in separate segments:
We start off with the legendary voice of Memphis wrestling, Lance Russell, who joins the show to, among other things, get us up to speed on what he’s been up to lately, including the Memphis Grizzlies’ Wrestling Night, the Gulf Coast Wrestlers’ Reunion, sitting down for WWE’s Jerry Lawler DVD, and his upcoming appearance at PopCon in Evansville, Indiana. We also cover all sorts of historical topics including some of his non-wrestling broadcasting memories, wrestling content that got him in trouble as director of programming, rescuing a bad promo, his enjoyment of Tony Charles and other British-style wrestlers, the unveiling of Dr. Frank, and much more.
In the second segment, LaToya Ferguson, reviewer of Monday Night Raw (among other, non-wrestling shows) for AVClub.com joins me to talk about a number of topics including reviewing Raw as a TV critic more than a wrestling fan, how TNA’s Paprazzi Productions of all things got her back into wrestling a decade ago, and more.

Sherdog.com contributor/MMA preview expert and Heavy Hands Podcast host Patrick Wyman joins me to discuss his lapsed wrestling fandom being reignited by Brock Lesnar and WrestleMania chatter We touch on Patrick being a Nitro-era WCW guy who didn’t quite “get” Mick Foley, why Brock Lesnar is the most compelling man in the world, how Patrick knew coming in cold that Roman Reigns wasn’t quite ready, and more.
After that, we move into the MMA and kickboxing realm with a look at UFC’s surprising strong morning/afternoon card this Saturday covering topics that include whether or not Ricardo Lamas is boring and the greatness of Al Iaquinta. Finally, we briefly delve into this week’s Glory card, as well as the awesomeness of UFC Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Welcome to the first episode of The Trade Marks, the first episode of a new show from David Bixenspan (me!) and Dylan Hales
