However, I do believe I have some solid recommendations to share. Therefore, for the next three “me only” episodes of The Author Switch, I’m going to share my answer to that question. In this episode, I’m sharing books that have helped me write better books. You might be surprised by my choices.

Fiction can be a tricky thing. It can look so easy to do on the outside. But then, when you get into it, it starts to morph and you can get off track. Or, you can use a variety of tools that keep you on track so that you shorten the learning curve. In this episode, Dave Reed shares his unique journey of discovering his author’s voice and how he learned how to develop and structure his stories.

Episode 19: The Monster Method for Busting Through Writer’s Block
[The Author Switch Classic]
You’ve been sitting at your desk for hours – possibly days – and just can’t get the words out. Writer’s Block isn’t fun, it isn’t pretty, and it certainly isn’t an excuse so that you can twiddle your thumbs. In this episode of The Author’s Switch, I going to share what writer’s block really is, and a framework that can help you bust through it forever.

Writer’s block is a common phenomenon that can happen to any writer, and it can be frustrating and make one feel like they are unable to come up with ideas or write anything that matters.
In this episode of The Author Switch, the host, Carma Spence, discusses writer’s block, including the different causes of writer’s block, which can be creative issues, mindset problems, emotional issues, environmental factors, health problems, or spiritual disconnection. The Monster Method for Busting Through Writer’s Block is presented as a framework to help writers identify the cause of their writer’s block and find a cure. Carma also provides a free tool called the Writer’s Block Assessment to diagnose writer’s block and offers personalized help for writers who need assistance.
Recap & Takeaways
- There is a lack of useful advice available online to overcome writer’s block, and many articles deny the existence of writer’s block altogether, claiming it is a myth or an excuse.
- Writer’s block is a symptom and not a disease, and it can have multiple unrelated causes, which have been organized into six categories in the Monster Method Framework: Creative Krakens, Mind Goblins, Emotional Hobgoblins, Environmental Ogres, Body Banshees, and Spiritual Specters.
- The Monster Method for Busting Through Writer’s Block involves identifying the cause of the writer’s block before trying to implement a cure. The Writer’s Block Assessment tool is available for free at authorneering.com/blockassessment to diagnose the type of writer’s block and suggest appropriate remedies.
With the knowledge of the Monster Method Framework, writers can have a better understanding of what is causing their writer’s block and choose the right tips and methodologies that have the best chances of helping them overcome it and get back to writing.
Transcript for Episode 19: The Monster Method for Busting Through Writer’s Block
NOTE: Due to some ad libbing, this may not be an exact transcript.
Writer’s block is a frustrating phenomenon that can happen to any writer – even famous writers such as Leo Tolstoy, Stephen King and J.K. Rowling have experienced it. I, myself have experienced it. Writer’s Block makes you feel like there’s nothing in your head, no ideas for stories or articles and it can seem impossible to write anything that matters. It can even make you feel like you’re suddenly stupid.
In this episode, I’m going to talk about the following things:
- What writer’s block is
- The six types of things that cause writer’s block
- And my Monster Method for Busting Through Writer’s Block
If you were to search the internet looking for a remedy for your writer’s block, I’m afraid you won’t find much that is of any use. I’ve done some extensive research and here’s what I’ve found:
Most of the articles are lists with only 1-3 sentences of suggested advice per tip. Light on details, mostly fluff. And not much information on whether the advice is backed by research or not. Some are just lists of quotes from authors sharing what they’ve done.
After noticing this, I decided to do a semi-scientific study of what was available. I pulled the top 14 articles that promised to provide advice on how to beat writer’s block and analyzed them.
- Only 11 provided advice.
- Of those, 52% of the advice addressed creative issues and 26% addressed mindset.
- The remaining 22% were a mix of physical, emotional, or multiple-cause solutions.
What I found most surprising, and, frankly, most disappointing, was that the most common piece of advice was some version of, “suck it up and stop worrying that you’re not good enough.” But not one of the articles gave any indication of how to do that.
In addition to the very poor selection of usable advice for overcoming writer’s block, I found a lot of articles that basically said writer’s block didn’t exist. How...

Hello! And welcome to The Author Switch, the podcast dedicated to helping aspiring and new authors turn on The Author Switch to success in their minds. This is lucky Episode number 13. If you missed any past episodes – especially episodes 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 in October, December, January, February, and March – go to authorswitch.com to find them.
I’m your host Carma Spence, author of five books, including the award-winning and bestselling Public Speaking Super Powers and the now-in-pre-order second edition of Home Sweet Home Page.
You may be wondering why I emphasized catching those odd-numbered episodes of this podcast. Well, in those episodes I talked about the first through fifth steps in the Authorneer’s Journey, and in this episode, I’m going to share step number six. These episodes are part of an eight-episode series on the Authorneer’s journey.
I assure you that each episode can stand on its own and you will gain valuable information about the various parts of the writing, publishing, and marketing-a-book journey from each episode individually. However, they will help you more effectively if you listen to them all because they will give you a more holistic view of what goes into making a living as an author.
Now on to Part six: Pre-Publishing!
So what do I mean by pre-publishing? I’ve talked a bit about this before in earlier episodes of this series, but this is the phase where you really get the work done. This is where you get your cover finalized. Your content edited and designed. Then proofed again. All the pieces of your book come together in a beautiful package ready for your readers to enjoy!
Now, if you were working with a publisher, they would handle all that, but as a self-published indie author ... you’re in charge of all this stuff. So what do you do? Well, here’s how I did it for my latest book, Home Sweet Home Page. And if you’re listening to this episode, I recommend you stop and to check out the video version, because I’m going to share some slides because this information is quite visual.
First, let’s talk about the cover. With Public Speaking Super Powers and even the first edition of Home Sweet Home Page, I designed the cover. And I’m happy with the results. However, I was really struggling with coming up with a next-level design for the second edition, so I decided to hire a designer and the easiest way to do that on a budget is with 99Designs.com.
This is not the only way, but it is an easy and affordable way. For a flat fee, you run what is called a design contest and designers compete to design your book cover. Look at some of the amazing designs I got. And these are only some of the ones I liked the best. There were more. It was really tough whittling them down to a few.
While the contest is running, you can get help deciding by running a poll. Share the poll in social media and get feedback on the designs you’re getting. This is a great way to get your following excited about your forthcoming book, as well, by the way.
After your contest is over, you finalize the design with your designer and receive the files. Now there are some potential pitfalls I want you to be aware of when it comes to timing your cover design contest:
- If you can wait until the interior is done, do so
- If not, make sure the designer does NOT give you final covers until the interior is done and agrees to this as part of the contest
- Be very clear on what formats you want the book design for
- Be willing to pay an extra cost for extra designs
- Make sure you get all master files, including fonts and images, in case you need to make changes later
Then you can do a special cover reveal event on social media! Your book just got a little more real. Cool, huh?
In a moment, I’ll talk about the interior design. But first, here’s a short commercial break.
There are five deadly mistakes plaguing the websites of authors, speakers, and coaches. Are you making one of them?

You wake up in the morning ... late. Your alarm didn’t go off. Why? The power went off. Urg.
You shuffle into the bathroom and find the hand towel on the floor, rather than on the towel bar. Your teenage son didn’t clean up after himself. Urg.
You get to the kitchen, pour yourself some cereal, and sit down with your tablet to catch up with Facebook posts while you eat. Bam! You miss your mouth with the spoon and spill cold milk down your brand-new blouse. ARG!!!
What are you to do? Today’s guest, Ben Winter, would say that your expectations — to have the power stay on, to have your son put the towels back where they belong, to know how to use a spoon — were not met and you’re upset. And, he has a system for dealing with those unmet expectations head-on.

Ben Winter is an author, speaker, actor, improvist, entrepreneur, traveler, father, and much, much more. He loves to explore, physical places around the world, as well as the mind. He wrote What to Expect When Having Expectations when he realized that the only reason anyone gets upset is because of an expectation that has gone unmet. Needless to say, this book is about expectations, where they come from, why you have them, and what to do about them when you find yourself getting upset.
In today’s world, being upset less often is so crucial to our mental and physical health. “I have found great peace and joy when I follow my own advice,” says Ben.
