The Atypical Leader - Watch Out For Sub-Cultures!

Watch Out For Sub-Cultures!

04/13/24 • 26 min

This week's discussion is on culture: how is a good one created? What distinguishes a good culture from a poor one? Culture revolves around people; it's about how individuals embody principles, how governance ensures these principles are upheld, and whether the environment enables them to do so.
- How can one ascertain if their perspective on culture is accurate?
- Which tools are utilized to assess the culture?
- How is the culture rectified?
Even within positive cultures, sub-cultures may emerge. On the surface, everyone appears content, yet there are small groups, the occasional shoulder shrugs, smirks, covert conversations by the water cooler, and a sense of cynicism infiltrating the business. Why and how does one initiate change?

The Atypical Leader - Ep 4 - Why Are We No Longer Cavemen?
play

06/03/23 • 24 min

We will continue our conversation with Carlos Davidovich, where we’ll talk about how making mistakes, especially in the right environment, causes the brain to develop and grow (scientifically). Best of all we hear how it’s always been the neurodiverse and the atypical that have advanced society and that it is most likely to stay that way.

Which raises the question, why are society and businesses still trying to push anyone different to the middle?

Let’s find out!

I thought it was about time we did an episode on about women, particularly neurodivergent women, but also about the general struggles' women have in business to get ahead. Rick doesn't agree with a lot of the hype on this subject, and he tells us why...
- He personally has never not worked with women that aren't strong and didn't go after what they want
- He explains his take on equal pay for an equal job
- He says he searched all his career for the boy's club that everyone talks about but could never find it???
Amazingly we only got close to fisticuffs once but overall, we had a great conversation about how Rick's experience in the corporate world gave him a totally different view on women's, atypical or not, role in business. Take a listen and please let us know your thoughts and comments:

The Atypical Leader - What You Eat Impacts Your Brain
play

10/14/23 • 28 min

That's great to say that but what the hell does it mean, and particularly, what does it mean for us Atypicals and Neurodiverse people? We all have our different shit and how can we figure out what works and doesn't work? Well, on today's episode we will be discussing just that with our guest, Heather Drummond, a Naturopath and Holistic Nutritional Consultant, out of Moncton, NB.
- Food really does impact the way we feel and how our brain works
- Food has changed dramatically and dynamically over the last 70 years and more profoundly in the late 70s, early 80s when fast food hit. MacDonald's anybody?
- Stress + poor diet = illness in weak spots in the body so on a neurodiverse scale the weak spots could be how the brain operates and how the digestive system operates
- Weak spots could be headaches, pain, gut problems... inflammation causes weak spots and is affected by what we are putting in and on our bodies
So join us on this week's episode of "The Atypical Leader" and find out how you can be in control of how good you feel and how well your brain operates just by changing your eating/drinking habits. Fingers crossed it doesn't mean I have to cut out my red wine!

The Atypical Leader - The Ups And Downs of Atypicals Featuring Ben Brost
play

08/05/23 • 29 min

This episode is about how each atypical person is different, like a snowflake they come in all shapes and sizes with each one having an unique mental footprint. Our successes and failures have a lot to do with having an understanding of our strengths and an awareness of what neuro traits we are dealing with. With our guest, Ben Brost, we discuss what solutions worked for him and how by understanding his needs, strengths, weaknesses and especially what coping stategies worked were critical to his success. Oh, and there is a lot of talk about golfing which I kiboshed very quickly.

The Atypical Leader - How The Hell Did This Turn Into That???
play

09/02/23 • 26 min

In this episode we are once again talking about how Rick was able to turn his limitations into skills and find success. "Hold it! More accurately its more how did the rough and gruff, inappropriate, rag-tag, stubborn, party animal not get thrown over the bridge" and that, our dear listeners, is the one and only Dan the Man White. If you are an avid listener to our podcast you will be familiar with Dan from the stories Rick has told and finally, we are all going to meet him! One of the first things he said to me was "how the hell did you get hooked up with this guy" LOL, what could I say? Dan and Rick have known and worked together for years. While fun was their first priority for decades and yes, they'd party till the wee hours of the morning, when it came to work they were all business! Find out why Dan was referred to as "Black Ops" and how he watched the transformation of Rick take place over the years.

The Atypical Leader - News In The Pharmacy World... Rexall Is Being Sold, Again!
play

03/23/24 • 22 min

Finding out that a) McKesson owns Rexall and b) McKesson is selling Rexall I had to ask Rick why that would be? Rexall is my neighbour drugstore and I was interested in why it would be sold plus I had a few things to get off my chest about Rexall. So, we had a great chat about the Canadian pharmacy scene...
- Are independent pharmacies going to be a thing of the past?
- How the management / pharmacists play such an important role in the success of the drugstores
- Is it important for the local drugstore to part of the community?
This is a good example of understanding that culture comes first: it starts at the top, you have to listen, follow it down through the system, understand what needs to be done and how to do it. It all comes down to leadership.

Well listeners, I think its time to find out if Rick really walked the talk. This is a good one, we’re getting on a roll! We’ll show you how asking for and accepting help is essential to your growth and building relationships.

You can try and do it on your own, but why would you? We need to understand that asking for and accepting help is a display of confidence. Be a sponge and seek information, support and know-how so you can capitalize on your unique set of skills.

Indeed, that is the million-dollar question. Some individuals can effortlessly offer advice, and one might marvel at their brilliance. But the real question is whether they are genuinely addressing your concerns and if their counsel is sound. It remains an enigma.
- Often, when seeking advice, many seem to prefer the sound of their own voice rather than attending to the actual needs presented.
- Have you ever received advice and felt your own understanding was superior?
- Is it necessary to seek testimonials from others?
To solicit advice effectively, one must trust, respect, and be familiar with the advisor. True assurance in the trustworthiness and validity of someone's guidance comes with time and consistent interaction. For someone neurodivergent like Rick, discerning whether others grasp his perspective is a contemplative matter. Let's listen and determine if we can address the million-dollar question.
