Consider this your pep talk, reminding you that you are not "just" a nurse. You are a mother, daughter, sister, husband, brother, painter, baker, skater, runner, book nerd, movie buff...you are HUMAN. This profession is not your identity. We talk about this often, but let's talk about what you can do to take ACTION to prioritize yourself, highlight your humanity, and celebrate the pieces of yourself that are OUTSIDE of the hospital.

Let's talk about some simple, but powerful ways that we can prioritize ourselves and our mental/physical wellbeing in a culture that encourages self-sacrifice. Nursing is often centered around selflessness and altruism, which can lead us to burnout if we aren't careful. The reality is, you cannot pour from an empty cup, so let's talk about a few ways that we can fill back up, so that we have energy and compassion to give back to others.

Happy Nurses Week!! First, I want to celebrate my fellow nurses, and express my gratitude for all that you do. BUT I also want to empower you to ask for what you truly need this week. On this week's episode, we chat about 3 practical goals for you to bring in to the New Year. I know that you are being bombarded with all of the "New Year, new you" sentiments and the goals that you "should" be embracing as we enter 2022, but I want to talk about the things we should be thinking about this year: fighting for ourselves, asking for what we need, and trying things outside of our comfort zones. Let's have a real chat, and enter the New Year celebrating all that we have achieved instead of everything we think we need to "improve." You are doing incredible things, and I hope that you embrace that whole-heartedly.

This episode is for you if you have ever asked yourself questions like:
-Why did I even become a nurse?
-Why did I spend all of this money and effort on something I HATE?
-I was told I would love this career, what is wrong with me?
-Is the problem the profession of nursing all together?
HOT TAKE: These questions are normal. I have asked myself these things a million times. That does not mean you have to just "suck it up." Being miserable every day is NOT normal, and not healthy. So let's chat about some strategies to figure out what is causing you to ask these questions and what we can change. Is it mindset, a toxic environment, losing sight of your why? There are a million variables, but the first step is self-reflection and having the hard conversations.

This past week I sat down with an inspiring 18-year-old woman who a friend is mentoring. She is starting a nursing program, but is totally unsure about what she wants to do. She has TONS of ideas and career paths that she is interested in, but doesn't know which is the RIGHT path. This conversation got me thinking about my own journey, and with all of its twists and turns I realized, I had NO IDEA what I wanted or what I was doing when I chose my first major. And...I honestly still have no idea what I am doing. Maybe you can relate.
If so, this episode is your reminder that you don't have to have it all figured out. The path you choose is not "right" or "wrong." Its not your FOREVER. You aren't stuck there. If you chose a unit that you don't like, you do not have to stay there for X amount of time. But I also want to remind you that you are EXACTLY where you need to be right now, and there are lessons wherever you find yourself. Life is about the journey, not the milestones or goals along the way. It is about how you got there.
