This first installment of Holiday Homemaking 2024 is a little different than past episodes. The first half of the episode is a mini deep dive on Advent with wife, mom, homemaker and author, Donna Amidon. She shares how her family practice of decorating a Jesse Tree throughout Advent transformed their celebration of Christmas and led to her new book, Tracing His Promise.

Then we jump into familiar Holiday Homemaking territory with Amanda Faucett's and Holly Tompkins' holiday stories of home, some holiday poetry and some tips from me on coordinating family or group gift giving.

I am chatting with Amanda Turk, mom of 5 and homemaker for 23 years, some of which was done overseas. We talk about how books and head knowledge can be helpful but can also get in the way of learning to trust the instincts God gives us as homemakers and caretakers. Amanda shares the lessons she learned homemaking in a foreign country and why a habit of saying “yes” is crucial to practicing hospitality in her home.

In this episode I am chatting with Kerita Fuller about her experience keeping a home for the past 10 years with her husband and step children. Kerita worked for the US Air Force for 20 years before retiring and fully embracing her role as full time homemaker and helpmeet to her husband. We talk about her sudden and steep learning curve of become a mom, not to babies, but to teens. She had a very short runway to prepare them to leave the nest as capable young adults and that was a big responsibility. Kerita shares openly how infertility can tempt her to compare to women who have what she doesn’t but that God has taught her that what motherhood looks like is not what she thinks it should look like, but what He says it looks like. I love her perspective on hospitality and how homemaking builds community and she has some fun stories, tips and ideas to share.

I am chatting with Darah Rogers who has been keeping a home for several years...including a time of single homemaking in a youth camp cabin during covid and most recently for 2 years with her husband and baby girl. Darah shares how she struggled to reconcile her long standing desire to be at home full time with the cultural pressure she felt to pursue a career and how she is still resolving that struggle. We cover all the usual ground of fails, wins, tips and Titus 2 advice. Darah has that youthful zeal for all the homemaking things and I picked up several new ideas from her!
In Allison's Update, I'm sharing my favorite new kitchen tool, how you can contribute to our Season 20 theme and all about our new private Facebook group, Homemaker Forum.

Join us for this Newbie Homemaker Portrait of my friend, Abby Colbath. Despite your youth and classification as a "Newbie", Abby has a lot to share. Her experiences over the past few years have given her perspective and wisdom that many of us don’t gain until much later in life. She has walked through the joyful, but challenging waters of newlywed life, started a business from scratch, and faced some very dark valleys of grief and loss, and it is clear to see how the Lord has carried Abby through it all.

Join me for this "in the trenches" homemaker portrait of my friend, Lana. While we at AoH define the "in the trenches" homemaker as one who is 10+ years into her journey with lots to manage in a busy household, Lana is very open about her time in the trenches of struggling to "love every minute" of parenting and homemaking. We talk about what to do with that unrealistic expectation. Lana is also a gifted photographer who specializes in newborn, family and branding portraits and she shares some tips to improve everyday photos.
