The Art of Bombing: A Guide to Stand-Up Comedy - Episode 236: Adam Bathe (Seattle Hilarious Comedy Festival, Savage Henry Comedy Festival)
play

06/30/22 • 73 min

Episode 236: Finding your crowd! In this episode, Dan and Josh are joined by Adam Bathe, a comic from the Phoenix, AZ scene. Adam has been performing one way or another since he was about 6 years old - doing everything from public speaking to Opera. Adam’s bombing story is about knowing your audience and how polarizing jokes don’t have to be divisive. In fact, if they’re well written, they can be enjoyable from a number of different perspectives. Dan and Adam also dig into what to do when you’re stuck with a failed joke, and how to use silence to regain momentum when you’re performing. Plus more! Please rate and review. Adam Bathe Adam delights audiences with tales of the unexpected as he shares stories from his childhood and life as a professional party host. Born in Savannah, Georgia, Adam currently lives and works as a professional party host and event organizer in Phoenix, AZ when not on tour. Sharp wit, southern charm, and attention deficiency make for a flurry of recent recollections and real-life craziness seen through the eyes of a disenfranchised former Opera singer.

Jennifer Sutherland (Austin Sketch Fest) | Our Fear of Dolls

The Art of Bombing: A Guide to Stand-Up Comedy

play

11/22/23 • 75 min

Jennifer Sutherland is a Denver-area comic who does both sketch and stand-up comedy. She tells Dan Bublitz Jr that when things go wrong on stage you have to take ownership - in other words, in order for a comic to improve, he or she can’t simply blame the audience.
Jennifer reminds us that it’s tough to talk about personal stuff with some audiences - she and Dan explore how to deal with dark material without making the crowd so sympathetic that they feel sorry for you. If you feel the crowd isn’t into it, Jennifer says you have to avoid self-sabotage - do your best - because you can’t read their minds - they may be really into it.
Overcoming negative feelings isn’t easy when you’re a performer - Jennifer and Dan jam about different ways to get your mind moving in a new direction before the show. They also explore Dan’s fear of dolls.
Jennifer Sutherland
Jennifer Sutherland is a former vet tech, special makeup effects artist, and current software engineer, Denver native. She started in sketch comedy and now does both sketch and stand-up.

The Art of Bombing: A Guide to Stand-Up Comedy - Go Back To College with Garie Lewis (Siouxland's Choice Awards Comedian of the Year)
play

03/16/23 • 63 min

Episode 267: Go Back to College! He doesn’t remember much about it because it happened in 1983, but Garie Lewis’ first set featured props and stolen jokes from Steven Wright and Bill Cosby. When he walked off stage, the club owner told him to ‘go back to college.’ Lucky for us, he didn’t. Garie and Stand-Up Comic Dan Bublitz Jr revisit story after story from Garie’s rich comedy past. They talk about taping your set, recovering when you lose your composure, and how you can’t win them all. Garie tells us: You just can’t make everyone laugh. This episode is “can’t miss” - Garie has truly seen it all! Please rate and review.
Garie Lewis
Garie’s first open mic was in August 1983...between then and now a bunch of stuff happened and he joked about it all over the US.
