EP 274 - Anxiety Recovery and Self-Care
The Anxious Truth - A Panic, Anxiety, and Mental Health Podcast
09/13/23 • 24 min
Self-care in anxiety recovery. We hear about it all the time, but is self-care always essential oils and hot baths and candles and soothing? It certainly can by, but self-care is also giving yourself what you really need, which isn't always what you want. Sometimes self-care means challenging yourself a bit to help break the avoidance cycle. Sometimes self-care means you choose to be uncomfortable now to feel better about yourself later.
Let's take a closer look at self-care in a way that might not all that obvious.

EP 251 - Why Did I Have A Panic Attack? I NEED TO KNOW! (Recorded In A Spot I Used To Be Afraid To Go)
The Anxious Truth - A Panic, Anxiety, and Mental Health Podcast

WHY Did I Have A Panic Attack? I NEED To Know!
"Why did I have a panic attack?" is a question asked many many times every day in the community surrounding this podcast. People early on in the anxiety journey labor under the assumption that in order to get better they must uncover and decode their panic triggers and understand WHY panic attacks are happening to them repeatedly. This might make sense at face value, but it's often quite unhelpful or even harmful. People down the road to recovery might go a long time between panic attacks, then experience once, then immediately get dragged down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out why it happened and what it means. Again, not terribly helpful and not necessary. Let's look at why.
While we're at it, let's do the first in my mini-series visiting places that I used to be terrified to go, starting with the end of my own driveway. True story. I was afraid to go that far from my front door at one time. That's why this episode was recorded there.

Trauma And Anxiety. Are There Conflicting Messages In Recovery?
Trauma and anxiety often co-exist. That's not news. For many in this community, the lingering effects of traumatic experiences are real, and they can impact the anxiety recovery process. Today I want to take a look at something a little out of the ordinary. I want to talk about how some of the core principles of anxiety recovery might cause confusion and even conflict for those working to overcome trauma.

EP 193 - Paying Attention: Anxious Thinking Is Not The Only Thing Happening
The Anxious Truth - A Panic, Anxiety, and Mental Health Podcast
02/02/22 • 22 min
So much of the anxiety and fear struggle is based on what we feel, what we think, and what we think about what we feel. What if thinking and feeling were NOT the most important things in the universe all the time? What if you could learn to pay attention to other things instead? How would that help you in your anxiety recovery journey?

EP 194 - Making Up Anxiety Recovery As You Go Along Is A Bad Idea
The Anxious Truth - A Panic, Anxiety, and Mental Health Podcast
02/09/22 • 17 min
Making up your anxiety recovery as you go along is not a good plan. An anxious person will wait to see how they feel before deciding what to do, so avoidance and taking the more comfortable way can accidentally become the default. Anxious people are also not very good at making productive decisions about what to do while anxious. Building structure and having a plan to execute without assessing how one feels or having to think about it is a very useful tool in recovery.
In today’s podcast episode we’re going to discuss three reasons why it’s important to make an anxiety recovery plan.

EP 195 - The Paradox of Letting Go: Short Term vs Long Term Anxiety Relief
The Anxious Truth - A Panic, Anxiety, and Mental Health Podcast
02/16/22 • 20 min
Today we will tackle the paradox of letting go in the anxiety recovery process.
The concept of letting go - giving up the struggle - is a key concept in anxiety recovery. But in the context of recovery, letting go is not a thing designed to create instant calm or tranquility. In fact, the initial act of letting go will do quite the opposite. It will likely increase tension and discomfort. Over time we find a reduction in tension. As we progress, we do find increased contentment and calm. This is achieved through the repeated, long-term practice of letting go, even when letting go may increase discomfort at any given moment.

EP 198 - Jen Kirkman: Two Anxiety Paths, Same Destination
The Anxious Truth - A Panic, Anxiety, and Mental Health Podcast
03/09/22 • 35 min
Jen Kirkman is a comedian, author, actor, TV writer, and podcaster that has lived through anxiety and panic for large portions of her life. I was fortunate enough to have Jen on the podcast this week to talk about her path into anxiety and panic, then out the other side. I’m sure her story will sound familiar to most listeners.
While talking with Jen (I was on her podcast last week), I realized that we had lived very different experiences emotionally and mentally, yet both wound up in the same place with regard to anxiety and panic issues. Panic attacks. Irrational fears. Driving anxiety. Life restrictions. Jen and I lived a similar experience with anxiety even when our emotional and thinking styles could not be more different.
I spent some time this week exploring this with Jen.
