The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 117: Leiji Matsumoto Tribute Livestream with Zack Davisson
The Anime Nostalgia Podcast

In February of 2023, we learned that we lost an icon of not just manga and anime, but a pillar of otaku fandom as we know it: Leiji Matsumoto. And so this month, we celebrated him and his beautiful Leijiverse by having a fan-made Memorial Livestream. For those that missed out on it, this is the audio from said livestream, in handy podcast form! The first part of the stream I was joined by Leiji Matsumoto translator and superfan, Zack Davisson, as we give some background on Matsumoto’s live and work. After that, I reached out to the Leijiverse fandom to get audio and written submissions on not only how Matsumoto’s work touched our hearts, but also significantly changed some of our lives. Get those tissues ready, because there’s sure to be some tears shed in this heartfelt, extra-long episode!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 112: Berserk '97 25th Anniversary with Mayra
The Anime Nostalgia Podcast
10/30/22 • -1 min
October is not only spooky month, but it’s also the 25th anniversary of the very first Berserk anime adaptation! So what better time to discuss this dark fantasy horror series with my good friend and huge Berserk fan, Mayra, who you might remember from my episode on the oral history of anime penpaling! For the first part of the episode, we go over the history of Berserk, some of it’s main characters, celebrating Kentaro Miura’s original manga, and why it’s such a notable & important work. Then the second half is Spoiler Talk, for all of you who’re already familiar with the series! Please note that since Berserk IS a dark fantasy that contains a LOT of heavy topics, we do discuss things like dealing with trauma, etc. in the Spoiler half of the podcast.

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 91: ReView: Space Family Carlvinson

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!
This month’s episode is another ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. This month, I’m revisiting a domestic space sitcom with an unusual name and surprisingly impressive cast & staff, but was never released in the US: Space Family Carlvinson! But does it still hold up? Let’s find out!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 86: 10 Older Anime Recommendations With Zee
The Anime Nostalgia Podcast
04/25/20 • -1 min
Currently, many of us are staying & working from home due to the global pandemic. Which means a lot of us are watching more stuff to pass the time or de-stress...and to help with that de-stressing, I’ve recruited Zee to return & join me with a list of 10 older anime titles that we’d recommend checking out! But we didn’t stop there: we have way more than 10 if you count the random tangents and honorable mentions we crammed in there as well. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a podcast ep where we try to just have a fun, chill vibe and talk about various series you might be interested in trying! All this plus answering a few listener questions!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 79: They Were Eleven with Rachel
The Anime Nostalgia Podcast
09/28/19 • 0 min
Returning guest Rachel is back to chat with me about all things related to the anime adaptation of Moto Hagio’s sci-fi shoujo, They Were Eleven! Listen as we discuss why this 80s anime (and the original 70s manga it’s based on) still resonates with us today, and how Hagio’s work was an early introduction to things like classism & gender roles to young anime fans back in the day. All this wrapped up in a cool sci-fi mystery! Since this title is a bit more obscure, we discuss the work relatively spoiler-free up until around the 41:05 mark...after that, plenty of spoiler-filled discussion for those who are already familiar with the work as we dive a bit deeper. Enjoy!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 94: 2020 Year In Review with Zee

2020 is finally almost over! So you know what that means–that’s right, it’s the Year in Review! And much like Krampus, Zee is back to help discuss the results of my annual year-end survey as filled out by you, the listeners! What older anime titles were you excited to buy (sometimes again) this year, and what titles are you looking forward to coming out in 2021? We also talk about all the memorable news stories from throughout this long, endless garbage fire of a year (though if you are utterly exhausted from hearing about 2020 news things, once you get around the time stamp 2:02:49, you can skip to right around the 3:36:56 mark!) I should note that, due to the year 2020 being ABSOLUTELY cursed, my original audio for this ep didn’t turn out great, so I was forced to fall back on my basic Skype recording, ON TOP OF the fact that the survey results got a little borked. So apologies that this episode is far from perfect, but hopefully it’ll still give you some laughs as we try our best to cast out the demons of this wild ride of a year in this extra long episode (with some bonus bloopers after the ending theme! Happy holidays!!)

This month’s episode is another short ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. It's Halloween month, so enjoy this fun-sized episode where I rewatch the dark & gritty 90s supernatural horror OVA, Twilight of the Dark Master. Is this one an actual treat, or is it better left sitting in the bottom of the candy dish? Let's find out!

Listen as we chat about what we love about it, Iwaaki’s strengths and weaknesses as a manga artist, and what kinda weird things WE’D do if we had strange alien parasite powers! Enjoy!
