The All 4 Inclusion Pod - 1. Kevin meets Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson

All 4 Inclusion presenter Kevin Daws catches up with Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson.

Kevin started interviewing people in written form to celebrate Disability History Month for All 4 Inclusion in October 2024. Following the success of these Interviews it was decided that we would continue these using our podcast and YouTube channel to present them.

You will also be able to catch up with them on our website too.

Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson has won 16 Paralympic medals, 11 of which are gold and won the London Marathon 6 times.

She played a big part in bringing London 2012 to reality for Paralympians.

Some may argue some of her biggest challenges have been away from sport. Battling society as a wheelchair user.

Born with Spina Bifida, Tanni had parents that pushed her to become the best version of herself that she could be and in turn encouraged her to help other disabled and non disabled people where possible.

Imagine wearing a wig 24/7
What are the consequences to you physically?
Mentally?
Laura and I spend time talking about what it's like to have Alopecia as a teenager. How it impacts on you physically, mentally and your education.
Your self confidence is broken, so is your self esteem. When do you start showing people your head?
Who do you talk to about this?
Laura is a true role model, she inspires people on social media and is intelligent.
During this episode she opens up about her feelings when she first found out and growing up. A lot of what you can learn from Laura can be transferred to any disability.
But is Alopecia a disability? Tune in to find out

Wheelchairs users may make up 8% of the disability community, but accessible housing will make people feel less isolated.
Some of the benefits of adaptations to a property boost living standards for non disabled people and people with other disabilities to.
I can only share my personal lived experiences as a wheelchair user.

Dr Shirley Woods Gallagher was diagnosed with Autistic in her later 40's.
She is a director at a Trust covering multiple schools and academies. Prior to that she held senior positions with Manchester City Council.
Shirley wants people to know that they can get senior roles with neurodiverse conditions such as autism and ADHD.
Be proud of who you are and embrace your condition as much as possible.
It really was inspiring talking to Shirley and I know we will stay in contact.

Meeting Kathryn Paylor-Bent was a great experience and I'm lucky to share it with you.
An injury when Kat was a young Mum left her in a wheelchair. Despite her disability, Kat wanted to be a hands on Mum for her son. Very early on in the conversation it's easy to see that Kat's a fighter. She had to fight to get her sons autism diagnosis and fight for what's right for her and her family.
Kat is a big advocate of adaptive fashion and started her own business Seated Sewing in March 2020. Please click the link below for more information on Kathryn Paylor-Bent

Business networking doesn’t need to be pressured. Each member of a networking group is a person and people go through tough times.
The last thing you want is to feel anxiety walking in to a meeting without the required referrals when you whole life is turning upside down.
This is where MOVE Online differs. It’s a business and personal development meeting where the mission is to make better human beings. The number one priority is that everyone on the meeting is okay. The group celebrates together as well as sharing problems with each other.
Joining me are co-founders Andrea Edwards and Mark Waldron. I put them on the spot to answer questions about MOVE Online and each other.
You get a real insight in to why they believe online networking will remain as well as a sense of why the members of MOVE show up each week.

The All 4 Inclusion Pod - #2 Rebecca's FND including a daughters perspective
play

Send us a text

It was an absolute pleasure to speak with Rebecca and her daughter Rosie about FND. Rosie was able to articulate what it is like to be a child when her Mum's life is changing due to Functional Neurological Disorder.
In this episode, Rebecca and Rosie talk about their support group, how FND impacts both older and younger children and some sacrifices she has had to make.
At the end of the episode you will hear Rebecca ask me to include to information on FND.
In my opinion, the place to start to learn about FND is the FND Hope website. The following link takes you to a page where you can order a really useful booklet, which I found helpful.
FND Patient Booklet - FND Hope International
In addition, FND Hope contains some useful videos, case studies and explanations about the condition.
Another organisation that I feel is useful is FND Action, which is a smaller organisation but also very good. You can find their website here FND Action - Home
Finally, have a look for support groups on Facebook. Be mindful though that the person providing advice is unlikely to be a professional and talking through their own lived experience.
