Here at WinsPress, we have another alcohol book on the way. And it's going to be different to ones you might have read before.
But before we go to print, we need your help and opinions.
Why?
In episode 15 of The Alcohol Recovery Show podcast, we explain what's going on and how it might benefit you.
Antonia poses some questions and prompts for you to consider. If you didn't catch them all in the podcast here they are:
· Do you have any views on how society or women’s roles impact their drinking behavior? Have you experience in supporting or encouraging a female loved one, family member, friend, or client to stop drinking? Have you felt equipped to understand their perspectives and needs?
· As a woman, how do you think your upbringing and the messages your received as a little girl and young woman have impacted on your drinking?
· Have you felt under pressure to ‘keep up with the boys’ in relation to alcohol consumption? Has this been in your professional life or your personal life or both?
· Has depression, in particular post-partem depression or depression linked to menopause, been a factor in your drinking?
· Do you feel hormonal fluctuations have affected your drinking behavior?
· Has motherhood been a factor in increasing or decreasing heavy drinking?
· How do you feel your roles as a woman in our society have affected how you drink? For example, as a mother, daughter, or partner?
· Has the passage of time affected your drinking adversely or for the better? Do you feel more tempted to drink as an older woman? For mothers of adult children, do you feel so-called ‘empty nest syndrome’ has been a factor in your drinking?
· Do you have experience as a transgender or gay woman in recovery? Do you feel your needs and perspectives have been understood and responded to by recovery services or groups?
· Have you been the victim of assault whilst under the influence of alcohol?
· Have issues such as low self-esteem, flagging self-confidence or self-doubt been reasons why you drank?
· When did you start to drink? What prompted you?
· Are there adequate policies in your area to ensure girls and women can go out safely at night whether they are drinking or not? How much of an issue is this where you live?
· Was alcohol a big deal for you as you grew up? Was getting drunk a rite of passage or a sign of rebellion and freedom?
· When you were growing up, did older female members of your family discuss drinking with you? What example did they set as regards drinking behavior? What sort of messages did you receive about being female in relation to alcohol consumption?
· Do you associate alcohol with a glamourous lifestyle? Or was this a factor in your drinking?
· How affected are you by alcohol advertising? Ate there any ads that have really affected you?
· Have you tried any traditional programs or groups to help stop drinking? What was your experience? Have you found that there are aspects of these programs that don’t resonate with you as a woman? How could they be improved to be more inclusive of women’s experiences and needs?
· Have you tried any recovery groups specifically for women? Have you found these helpful?
