The Actualizing Woman

The Actualizing Woman

Clare Bailey

Hi, I'm Clare and I’m a post-menopausal empty-nester and counsellor, recently diagnosed with autism (ASD) trying to process what the heck it all means! I look back over my life and try to understand why I had been feeling like a 'misfit' and SO different from everyone else.
I wade through it all, trying to learn how I can break free from the weight of the 'mask', and prepare to explore who I truly am and decipher all those "weird" bits about myself, that have never made sense to me. Armed with more information about adult autism, perhaps now I can start to be who I REALLY am and work on self-acceptance without fear of judgement. No masking. No pretending. No acting.
I chew over all my thoughts and experiences as I work through this process of discovering what is ME and what is FAKE, by looking back AND looking at my future plans.
I am planning my escape to France next year, (planned before my diagnosis) seeking to design a peaceful and free lifestyle that can now truly fit with my ASD needs and desires; my utopia in this world.
I'd like to hear from you if you are on a path towards your reinvention, self-acceptance, self-discovery and are creating your own healthier actualizing conditions, where you are able to thrive authentically, feel more fulfilled, and realize your true potential in life.

The Actualizing Woman - WHO'DA THUNK IT! AUTISM at 55 years old! So WHAT NEXT for me?
play

08/09/24 • 21 min

Hey! Well it happened! and it wasn't what I thought it would be.. In this episode, I talk about the fall-out after my ADHD assessment. Turns out its ASD! Having a (pre) diagnosis of autism at 55 years old has hit me hard. What does this mean for me now? Why am I feeling a sense of grief and overwhelming sadness at this news? BUT, on the other hand ... how empowering this is too! To be given this life-changing nugget of information by 'the two wonderful women' (the psychologists) explaining why I have been feeling disconnected, dysfunctional, over-emotional and confused for all these decades! Now I have the opportunity to learn more about myself, why I am how I am, and to grow and accept myself - to ACTUALIZE that little bit more!

With an ADHD assessment appointment coming up, I'm forced to think about what that could mean for me. As an older woman, how could my life have been different if this potential diagnosis had been given years before. Whatever happens, it's going to be an opportunity for me to learn more about who I am..

Sanity Vs Money Quandary - What do you Choose?
This episode is about my relationship with money - actually, it's more about how I earn it! I feel like my soul is dying when I work for someone else, but... its consistent and a reliable income. My soul screams at me, telling me that for the sake of my sanity, I should be self-employed.. I am stuck in that blimmin' awful place and while it's short term and I've been here many times before, I wanted to explore it all with you.
Have you been in this situation before? What did you do? How did it all work out?

Why do you want to leave Clare? Err.. because I'm rotting in this place! PART 2
I talk even more about some of my reasons for leaving the UK.. I talk about my potential diagnosis of ADHD and what that might mean for me, and also about WHO I will be, and CAN be, living in France. Once again, I talk about the book by Natalie Rogers and quote from this book. 'Emerging Woman' A Decade of MidLife Transitions.

The Actualizing Woman - Welcome to The Actualizing Woman!
play

02/28/24 • 4 min

Welcome to The Actualizing Woman - This is a short introduction to me, Clare Bailey, and an outline of what to expect in this show.
The Actualizing Woman - Seeking and Celebrating Authenticity, Potential and Fulfilment. Hi, I'm Clare and I’m a post-menopausal, pre-diagnosed autistic singleton and entrepreneur with a background as a teacher and chocolatier, seeking to carve out an ideal life for myself in France, as I move confidently into my evening-y years, while allowing myself to perhaps finally, explore who I truly am.
Also in this podcast, I will be having conversations with everyday women who have made a radical change in their life; women who have broken away from a stereotypical life or perhaps have experienced a pivotal moment in their lives, which has offered them the opportunity to re-evaluate themselves; on a journey of self-discovery, realization of their great potential and consequently have found fulfillment in their lives.
I’ll be exploring with them what the change was, why they made the change, what they learned about themselves, and what is different about their lives, now that change has been made.

And I’ll also be talking to women who feel ready to change something about their lives. Women who want to make that step closer to themselves; towards who they really are, but are struggling to know the first step to take. Perhaps women who are
stuck in a life that doesn’t fit them anymore, wanting to do something radical, something bigger, something that helps them feel passionate, inspired.... alive!

I'd like to hear from you if you are on a path towards your re-invention and creating your own healthier actualizing conditions, where you are able to thrive authentically, feel more fulfilled, and realize your true potential in life.

The Actualizing Woman - The PLAN - My Journey Towards My Ideal Conditions
play

03/25/24 • 27 min

The journey has begun. But what's my plan for my actualization? I sat up in bed one night with a damned great light bulb flashing over my head and immediately it all became very clear what I needed to do next in my life. For me to find my ideal conditions for my own self-development and actualization, I needed to find peace and quiet, in my own home, living a rural lifestyle, where my creative passions can be fully realized. But can I do that in the UK?

Why do you want to leave Clare? Err.. because I'm rotting in this place! I talk more in this episode (PART 1) about some of my reasons for leaving the UK (nothing political, I promise) The pull towards living life in a different country and creating a HUGE fresh start are strong and almost instinctual. My plan is to find a place where I can find myself, reevaluate my life and (hopefully) find inner peace; my zen self, now that I have a new chapter ahead of me and an empty nest.
I also talk about the book by Natalie Rogers and quote from this book. 'Emerging Woman' A Decade of MidLife Transitions.

The Actualizing Woman - Sanity Vs Money Quandary Pt 2 - My Gasts are Flabbered!
play

09/17/24 • 24 min

I'm flabbergasted! While working on this episode I decided to read a chapter on 'Employment & Career' from Aspergirls ( https://amzn.to/4clW19i ) JUST to see if there was any connection between ASD and how I feel (and what I strongly believe) about working for someone else. And THERE IT WAS - in black and white!
Have you been in this situation before? What did you do? How did it all work out?
Did you manage to create a working life where you have:
Financial Stability?
Independence (possibly through self-employment)?
Follow your passion?
I've learned that this is the GOLDEN RECIPE for me! - now I've just got to make it happen.... game on!
Just to add: "B - U - T - T - O - N - S" is a nausea inducing word for me! sorry! I had to spell it out instead x

The Actualizing Woman - Family Loss, Pleurisy and a Ridiculous Job - Ramble
play

09/05/24 • 16 min

Hey! I'm glad to be back after a bit of a break. This episode is a bit ramble-y. I talk about some family loss over the last few months and also about how I'm managing to keep working in a 'ridiculous' but necessary job that I'm desperate to leave and pursue my dream job. The dream job as a full-time podcaster will eventually become my means of financial survival and fulfillment for me, when I eventually arrive in France.

Hey! In this episode, I talk about how I've had differing responses from friends about my 'diagnosis' of ASD and how this has sent me into a bit of a spiral of negative thinking about how 'acceptable' I am to one person in particular.
