How the Aussie way of Risk Taking Changed My Life
That's Helpful with Ed Stott
05/18/23 • 29 min
Despite previously working as a war correspondent, when New York Times journalist Damien Cave moved to Australia from the US, he was shocked by the Aussie approach to risk taking.
Our national loves of nippers & surfing turned what his own country had taught him about risk & how it should be managed on its head.
He says it's changed not only his life but his family’s too & he’s since written a book about it.
Today, we're exploring how changing the way you think about risk can change your life, broaden your horizons & help raise more resilient children & communities.

The Science of Friendship & How to Make Them
That's Helpful with Ed Stott
02/22/24 • 48 min
We often don't make friendships a priority, but a growing body of science shows that quality, close friendships not only boost our mental health but physically change our bodies!!
Lydia Denworth is a science writer who’s been examining the monumental health benefits of friendship for years now. As someone who has often been guilty of neglecting friendships, this conversation blew my mind.
Lydia explains how good friendships are the key to living longer, the incredible impact they have upon us physically and how we can make and maintain the kinds of close friendships that can actually be much more life enhancing than the romantic relationships we often prioritise.

How to Change Your Mindset Towards Aging
That's Helpful with Ed Stott
05/09/24 • 43 min
How many times have you referred to yourself as ‘too old’ or ‘too young’ for something? Have you blamed your forgetfulness on a ‘senior moment’ or your sore neck on ‘being over 30’?
I’ll be honest, before I found out about Ashton Applewhite’s work, they were comments I made ALL the time. But, remarks like these as well as a whole host of other behaviors are acts of ageism - something Ashton calls the ‘last socially sanctioned prejudice’ & it’s damaging to everyone because guess what? We’re all aging!
So how can we push back against this discrimination and age positively in a society that’s obsessed with youth? That’s what we’re going to tackle today.
Ashton, is a journalist, pro aging radical and the author of This Chair Rocks - A Manifesto Against Anti-Aging.

Make Your Cycle Your Workout's Secret Weapon with Dr Stacy Sims
That's Helpful with Ed Stott
05/04/23 • 35 min
Many of us have grown up with the idea that unless exercise is painful, it’s not working - no pain, no gain right? But what if we could work with our bodies to make exercise easier, more effective and more enjoyable?
Growing research has found that most of the exercise plans we’re following are designed for men, and they don't factor in the different physiology of women, namely our hormones.
But Dr Stacy Sims is a scientist & female athlete performance physiologist & she says we should all be syncing our workouts with our cycle. In this episode Dr Stacy talks us through how to turn our cycle into our workout's secret weapon, plus a few other tips to optimise & focus our workouts.
NB: Whether your workout is walking around the block every other day or smashing out HIT on the regular there will be something in this episode for you, I promise! x

Heal Your Mind with Creativity
That's Helpful with Ed Stott
03/14/24 • 30 min
How often do you get creative? For me, it’s actually not very often & I’m sure that’s true for most of us.
But Caitlin Marshall & Lizzie Rose say it absolutely should be a priority in all of our lives as an essential tool for supporting good mental health - they even argue its science backed powers make it something that should be prescribed just like medication.
They’re the founders of Makeshift - an organisation that helps to deliver creative first aid to people who need it most. They’ve worked with disaster affected communities, juvenile justice centres, injured workers and employers across the country.
In this episode you’ll learn the science behind why our brains love being creative & some of the creative prescriptions you can start to introduce into your life whether you have a minute, 10 or 30 to play with!

That's Helpful with Ed Stott
05/30/24 • 40 min
So many of us expect to become less happy as we age, BUT science says you couldn’t be more wrong - you’ll likely become happier as you get into old age, you’ll be more content and more able to live in the present moment.
This phenomenon is called the happiness curve and it’s a concept that award winning journalist Jonathon Rauch is incredibly passionate about.
Jonathan is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington and the author of The Happiness Curve, Why Life Gets Better After 50.
So what does the research say, how can we avoid the midlife crisis we hear so much about & how might the happiness curve help us to reframe the way we approach aging? CONNECT WITH US Connect with That's Helpful on Instagram. Find Jonathon on Twitter & via his website.

That's Helpful with Ed Stott
04/04/24 • 53 min
Before I fell pregnant, I honestly couldn’t have taken less interest in pregnancy, birth or babies & for the first two thirds of my pregnancy my attitude remained the same. Until I read a book & that book sparked an obsession and sent me deep down the rabbit hole and I am now utterly obsessed with the science & magic of birth. The book I read was about hypnobirthing.
If you like me, before I read the book, think that means I’ll have to invite a man with a pendulum and a shiny black cape to my birth. You couldn’t be more wrong. Learning about hypnobirthing and reimagining the possibilities for birth has left me feeling empowered and dare I say it - excited for this huge life event.
So if you have a pregnant person in your life - please send them this conversation, they are going to be eternally grateful to you.
The woman responsible for my new obsession is Siobhan Miller, she’s the Founder of the Positive Birth Company.
In this episode, we’re going to give you an introduction to hypnobirthing & teach you some practical tools that will absolutely make your birth better.-
