Track 30 - Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche
Text, Prose & RocknRoll
02/01/22 • 24 min
5.0
LINER NOTES:
Kris sits down with filmmakers Paul Sng & Celeste Bell to talk about their film Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche, a documentary about Celeste's Mom, Poly Styrene.
For more on the film and to keep up to date on Celest and Paul, visit the website.
Follow the film on Social Media: @PolyStyreneFilm on Twitter & Instagram.
About the film:
Poly Styrene was the first woman of color in the UK to front a successful rock band. She introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion, using her unconventional voice to sing about identity, consumerism, postmodernism, and everything she saw unfolding in late 1970s Britain, with a rare prescience. As the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex, the Anglo-Somali punk musician was also a key inspiration for the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements. But the late punk maverick didn’t just leave behind an immense cultural footprint.
Poly was survived by a daughter, Celeste Bell. Celeste became the unwitting guardian of her mother’s legacy and her mother’s demons. Misogyny, racism, and mental illness plagued Poly’s life, while their lasting trauma scarred Celeste’s childhood and the pair’s relationship.
Featuring unseen archive material and rare diary entries narrated by Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga, this documentary follows Celeste as she examines her mother's unopened artistic archive and traverses three continents to better understand Poly the icon and Poly the mother.

For more on Richard Hell, you can visit his official website.
More about Richard Hell:
Richard Hell is an American singer, songwriter, bass guitarist and writer.
Hell was in several important, early punk bands, including Neon Boys, Television and The Heartbreakers, after which he formed Richard Hell & the Voidoids. Their 1977 album Blank Generation influenced many other punk bands. Since the late 1980s, Hell has devoted himself primarily to writing, publishing two novels and several other books. He was the film critic for BlackBook magazine from 2004 to 2006.

Track08 - Kathy Valentine
Text, Prose & RocknRoll
10/06/20 • 22 min
On this Track, Kris welcomes GoGo’s bassist Kathy Valentine as she discusses her memoir, “All I Ever Wanted”. From latchkey child in Texas to Madison Square Garden, Kathy and the GoGos broke barriers as the first successful all-female band. Like her rock mentor, Suzi Quatro , also a recent guest on Text Prose & RocknRoll, Kathy helped to forge a path for others. But things didn’t come as easily to Kathy, who fought addiction, and inner-band drama along the way. This is the first of a two part interview.

Kris is honored to welcome her guest, the First Lady of Rock n Roll herself, Suzi Quatro. From Detroit Rock City and around the globe, Suzi has sold more than 50 million albums and inspired countless female rockers. But being a pioneer wasn't without its hardship. Loneliness, sexism and strained familial relations all weighed on Suzi as she rose to the top. Now a new documentary illustrates how one woman's passion allowed her to persevere in the ultimate Boys Club and forge a path forevermore for female musicians everywhere.
Watch the SUZI Q now on Apple TV.
We love to hear from you and yes, we take requests! Please subscribe, rate, comment, then tell a friend!
Special thanks to Sisi Cronin at Sicily Publicity, Teddie Dahlin at New Haven Publishing, Tait Brady at The Acme Film Company, and my very special guest Suzi Quatro for her time and music in association with this podcast.
