Texas Counselors Creating Badass Businesses - 15. Counseling Intake Technique: The Question That Creates a Motivated Client
play

01/13/23 • 24 min

One thing we all want to do is to hone our skills so we can improve our work with clients. But, with tips and tools coming at us from all sides, how do we take action without getting overwhelmed?

I remember trying to become better at working with reluctant clients and focusing on all the things I needed to work on to make that happen. The list seemed endless, and I was getting nowhere tackling everything at once.

The strategy that changed everything for me was the opposite of that. Inspired by videos of Steve DeShazer and Insoo Kim Burg and their solution-focused work, I decided instead to focus on a single aspect of my counseling and improve on that.

When I was with a reluctant client, I noticed myself feeling trapped and frustrated. For one particular intake, I decided to focus on helping the client find exceptions and normalizing their struggles. This eventually turned into the 3-Point Wrap-Up I'm going to teach you today. Zeroing in on one issue was eye-opening and it completely changed my approach to helping reluctant clients.

So how can you focus on ending your intake session with a 3-Point Wrap-Up that will help your client win the battle for initiative (be more motivated)? Listen in on this episode to find out about the tactic I use and how you can apply it to your own intake sessions.

Texas Counselors Creating Badass Businesses - 60 Navigating Clinical Supervision: A Focus on Ethics and Multicultural Competence
play

12/15/23 • 25 min

Ever wondered about the intricacies that transpire behind the curtain of the world of counseling? Get ready as I reveal some spine-chilling tales from my supervision journey. In this latest episode of the Texas Counselors creating Badass Businesses Podcast, I dive deep into four unique stories that underscore the importance of understanding the rules for dual-licensed individuals, the dangers of misreporting supervision hours, the perplexity of dual relationships and ethical violations, and the trials faced when guiding individuals with different theoretical orientations. I bring to light the significance of clear communication and firm boundaries within the supervisory relationship, both key for public safety and a prosperous supervision experience.
Let's embark on a journey through the labyrinth of supervision hours needed for LPC and LMFT licenses in the Lone Star State. Be aware, the road is fraught with potential pitfalls and penalties if the hour-based requirements aren't met. The conversation takes a twist as we confront the issue of supervisors lacking multicultural competence and the ripple effect this has on their supervisees. As a response, I advocate for supervisors to actively pursue multicultural competence, laying the groundwork for an anti-racist foundation in their practice. And here's a surprise - I announce an upcoming webinar with Christina De Luna that will not only offer updates for 2024 but also a golden opportunity to earn a free CE credit. So, why wait? Sign up and share this indispensable information with your network. Prepare to be stirred and enlightened!

“You're such a tool”... is what we should say to EVERY thing we do in private practice.
In other words, you should be asking yourself, "Is what I'm doing (blogging, writing newsletters, podcasting, advertising on t-shirts) serving me or not?"

Blogging is the topic I want to cover today. In this episode, I share the blog goals that impact how I work right now. These are the latest additions to my arsenal, and I've been blown away by how effective they are!

Take most would-be bloggers for example. Blogs become another 'have-to' on their list of 'to-dos' and so instead of being amazed by hitting their strategic growth goals, they are stressed out by the process and underwhelmed with the results.
In this episode I take you behind the scenes of WHY you should have a blog and WHY NOT and give you great tools so you can hit the ground running.

One of those great tools is the editorial calendar. I've been using a lot since stepping back and revamping the marketing goals at Kate Walker Training (See Episode 18). This is a great way to maximize the team's potential if you are a group practice and even if you're not, it will keep YOU happy and engaged and excited to get the blogging work done.

Why?
So blogging goes from a chore you dread to an amazing marketing tool with a great ROI (return on investment)!
So tune in and enjoy!
