Ten Thousand Posts - My Life in Posting: Seamas O’Reilly
play

12/20/22 • 88 min

This week we’re joined by the writer Seamas O’Reilly to talk about his life in posting and why his prank photo of the Belfast Riots, featuring a photoshopped elephant and Noam Chomsky, keeps going viral and is also framed and hung up in a pub in Belfast.
Hussein also addresses his recent cancellation by a right wing think tank.

You can find Seamas's book, Did Ye Hear Mammy Died, here!

On this week's bonus, Hussein talks to Matt Dagher-Margosian, founder of Asia Arts Tours and the host of Arts of Travel Podcast, to talk about how activist groups and workers have used digital tools to advance material causes in Thailand, China, and India. Matt talks about how these movements - many of which were relatively unheard of in Western media - used digital tools not as a centre of their activism, but to enhance and complement their material demands, all while retaining physical territory and displaying their physical presence in public space. We talk about what activists, scholars and civil action groups could learn from these movements, and why it's essential to understand the internet through materialist lenses to challenge its neoliberal entrenchments.

Ten Thousand Posts - [UNLOCKED] Blue Ruin ft. Hari Kunzru
play

07/30/24 • 65 min

Hari returns to the podcast to talk about his latest novel, "Blue Ruin", published by Scribner.

Hussein and Hari talk about the London art scene in the 90s and early aughts, and how the novel examines the relationship between art, authenticity and access to capital. Hari also talks about the challenges of writing a 'Pandemic Novel' at a time when most governments are choosing to believe it never happened, and whether art can have a long-lasting social impact at a time when so much cultural production demands more intensity and immediacy as a means to enhance the 'consumer experience'.

Ten Thousand Posts - [PREVIEW] It’s Morbin Time ft. Liv Agar

On this week's bonus episode, we've heard your demands and finally- JUST THIS ONCE- acquiesced. Morbius is a fascinating example of a movie so awful and uninteresting that it became an object of ironic enjoyment. Posters managed to convince Disney to reopen the movie in cinemas, only for it to pull in about 80 dollars per cinema on average on it's reopening weekend.

Joining us to talk about this is Twitch Streamer and QANON Anonymous contributor Liv Agar, who penned the tweet that brought this back to our attention. https://twitter.com/Liv_Agar/status/1532643775553712130?s=20&t=hlAxrWGE_Ui5c2s1twW3yw
Devon joined for this one too, making this our first ever four-mic episode. And truly, what better a topic to break records for.

Eleanor (@goingmedieval) joins us once again to talk about this weird thing where TERFs and Trad guys seem to realise their visions of the future really aren't that different, and how following the same pathology of posts have allowed them to arrive there. We also talk about how Trads have successfully used the political purchasing power of TERFs to advance their own anti-feminist politics, in such a way that their online habits are basically a mainstay of politics now. Plus, we revisit friend of the show Greg Kelly, who once again is crying because the woke left are RUINING his favourite SWEET TREATS.

Ten Thousand Posts - Phoebe’s Reality TV Club: Love Island ft. Emma Garland
play

06/21/22 • 86 min

This week, as part of her continuing revenge on Hussein for making her watch, in her words, "a cartoon", Phoebe has forced him at gunpoint to watch a few episodes of this year's Love Island.
But, we can't do it alone, so joining us this week is culture writer Emma Garland! You can find Emma on twitter at https://twitter.com/emmaggarland and find her writing for Vice and The Guardian here https://www.vice.com/en/contributor/emma-garland and here https://www.theguardian.com/profile/emma-garland, respectively.

Ten Thousand Posts - Tank Engine Elegy ft. Amelia Horgan
play

02/08/22 • 70 min

We're joined this week by writer and academic Amelia Horgan, author of Lost In Work, which is published by Pluto press. We talk about the recent drama with Reddit's Anti-Work sub, and the complications of defining anti-work movements, especially in relation to white collar digital labour jobs and the work of fuelling the content economy. Amelia talks about how we might conceive of 'work' in these spaces, and why it'll be necessary for a future filled with digital assets, pumped up crypto scams and further alienation of labour from production. We also talk about the recent discourse around whether its abusive to let your kid watch Thomas the Tank Engine if you are of the belief that the trains are sentient and anthropomorphic - only to realise that the person making these claims was, once again, getting mad at Alice. -------- Buy Amelia's book from Pluto Press here: https://www.plutobooks.com/9780745340913/lost-in-work --------

Jacob (@JacobSilverman) comes on the pod this week to give us a brief overview of the rise and fall of 'non fungible tokens', the digital tokens that were supposed to usher in the blockchain-enabled economy and rejuvenate the art world. He tells us why NFTs were a scam from the very start, how it could have only emerged in the zero-percent interest rate climate, and what's happened to the tech companies who went all in on the Bored Apes.

Currently, Aid is not getting through. You can donate with the knowledge that these funds will be used the instant Aid is allowed into Gaza, but please do make your voice heard in other ways about this. Showing up at protest marches and writing letters to elected MPs are useful acts of solidarity. Please encourage your elected representatives to support calls for a ceasefire, while still bearing in mind a ceasefire is at best a temporary reprieve and represents the bare minimum

Ten Thousand Posts - Smooth Online Brain ft. Rory Blank
play

06/11/24 • 75 min

Comics artist and cartoonist Rory Blank joins us on this weeks free episode as we ask: What is an AI image, exactly?

Rory and Hussein discuss why the "All Eyes On Rafah" instagram post became the first 'viral' AI image, despite its inconsistencies, inaccuracies and lack of specificity. Rory explains how these features characterise the AI 'art' taking over the internet, why its proliferation is so difficult to regulate, and why we shouldn't see these images as creative outputs, but rather, a way to understand the confusion and detachment that comes with being on the internet today.
