As a STEM teacher for 11 years, Ben was able to work with a dynamic team of peers to craft and scale an unique approach to student-centered learning that blurs the lines between what happens in school and what happens in the real world. Ben’s role as a nationally recognized teacher leader also gave him the opportunity to work with some of the best education and workforce thought leaders in the world. These experiences were the catalyst behind the book he co-authored,“Open Up, Education!" and the 501(c)3 nonprofit he founded to help other school stakeholders create similar cultural conditions of innovation - innovation that helps equip students with skills they will need to thrive in the 4th industrial revolution, not just the 1st. COLLABORATING WITH STUDENTS TO CREATE VIRTUAL LEARNING
Ten Minute Teach In
04/02/20 • 14 min
Kip was so inspired by Kavita Gupta's insight in last week's episode about doing student "check ins" that he decided to do one himself. As a result of that, one of his students - Quiana - spoke up and shared how she wanted to include her own personal passions into the new learning landscape Kip's school was forming. Kip advocated for her to his principal and before he knew it, his school was planning an entire school-wide virtual passion project around Quiana's idea.
In this episode, Quiana joins Kip to discuss the importance of student voice as schools and educators around the country plan new ways to teach and learn.
Quiana's challenge to listeners is: How are you making sure that the virtual learning environment engages student interest and passions? Use the hashtag #TEACHERSTRONG and tag @KipHottman & @LearnMinute to share your insights to this week's challenge with us!
