Your website homepage isn't 'About' you - so listen to this episode to learn about all the required changes! Are your website's home page and about page ready for Techcess

On this episode of Techcess, m3 Networks Managing Director Mark Riddell talks all things website design and conversion rates with digital expert David Dwyer from Inspire Digital Agency.

No spoilers, but one of the main takeaways from their discussion is that your website should be transparent about your pricing.

Marcus Sheridan, known as 'the pool guy', pioneered an approach a few years ago with his book "They Ask, You Answer" and it has been gaining in popularity ever since.

And our own Mark Riddell is a big fan of Sheridan's insights, which is why we talk about him on this episode.

In addition to transparency, there are other important factors that will help convert visitors into customers.

Keep listening to find out what they are!

What are website conversions?

When someone visits your website, you want them to take some sort of desired action. This is called a conversion. Some common conversions are filling out a form, subscribing to a newsletter, or making a purchase.

There are many factors that go into whether or not a visitor will convert, including the design of your website, the copy on your pages, and the offers you present. If you want to increase your conversion rate, you need to focus on creating a positive user experience and providing incentives for visitors to take action.

You also need to track your conversions so that you can measure the effectiveness of your efforts. There are many tools and services available that can help you do this. Use the data that you gather to make changes to your website and continue to test different approaches until you find what works best for you.

Optimising your homepage

What should be on your home page?

This is the big question.

Your home page is the first impression that potential customers will have of your business, so it's important to make sure it represents your brand well.

In this episode of "Techcess" David Dwyer explains to Mark what a great home page looks like, and how you can achieve it.

Why you don't want a simple website builder like Wix or Squarespace

David Dwyer from Inspire Digital Agency advises against using a website builder like Wix or Squarespace because they don't have the customers best interests in mind. He recommends that businesses focus on creating a positive user experience in order to increase their conversion rate.

Listen to hear him explain how you can ensure your website is doing that.

"Friends Against Scams" -preventing you from becoming a victim of fraudsters pretending to be friends and family members on your Whatsapp chats. "Stop. Think. Call" is a venture from the National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative! What is "Friends Against Scams" hoping to achieve?

The people at National Trading Standards that sit behind "Friends Against Scams" want to make cyber criminals' lives harder by educating people about the types of scams they may be tempted into falling for.

Mark Riddell, host of the Techcess technology podcast has become concerned over some recent research and data recently surrounding scams on Whatsapp.

There was one very high profile incident reported by the BBC recently, and Mark breaks it down during this episode of Techcess.

Mark's concerned that this scam could become particularly common during the Christmas and overall festive season when cyber criminals are trying their best to take advantage of lonely or isolated people that don't have anyone else around them at certain times of the year.

In recent days, cyber criminals have been using this new Whatsapp method to contact users, such as the incident mentioned with pretending to be the victims' grandchildren in need of urgent financial help.

There have even been cases of scammers pretending to be a friend or family member who's claiming to be incarcerated abroad after being arrested for possession of drugs as a way to coax help from unsuspecting family members.

We should start by admitting that this episode won't help you hire a hitman. Sorry.

In this episode of Techcess, Mark Riddell talks us through his experience attending the UK Cyber Week event, and his summary of the keynote talks.

Among other things, we'll learn why you need to be careful if you're a high profile target that happens to attract the attention of a hot blonde on a dating app, and why you shouldn't share your birthday on social media...

This is an episode you don't want to skip if you want to be kept informed of the latest risks cyber criminals pose to your business!

The VIP experience

Thanks to the Techcess podcast, host Mark Riddell was invited to attend the UK Cyber Week as a VIP. Being that Mark also wears another hat as one of the founding members of m3 Networks, he jumped at the chance and booked himself into some juicy talks...

Confessions from an actual hacker

If you've listened to Techcess before, you'll know how much Mark really doesn't like hackers. And I mean REALLY doesn't like hackers. So imagine how intrigued he was to know that the first presentation he would get to see would be from an actual anonymous hacker, there, live on stage.

During the presentation, the hacker told a story of how his team managed to get access to a very high profile figure - who was trying to remain in hiding! - using nothing more than social media, a dating app, and some clever social engineering.

Geoff White - Lazarus Heist podcast (BBC) talks phishing

Another stand out moment from the event was the talk given by Geoff White from the Lazarus Heist podcast. Here's a link to listen to that if you haven't listened before yet.

Mark was impressed with this talk because it featured a live demo of an actual phishing operation being carried out. And as Mark mentions, it's not easy to make live demos go smoothly during a live event!

He also went to a talk from Tanmoy Hossain, from "Bob's Business" and his talk was called “Building Cybersecurity into Your Corporate Culture”.

But of course the talk you're wanting to know more about - the talk that inspired this episode's title.... Jake Moore from ESET and his talk "How to hire a hit man on the Dark Web". And if you want to know more about that, you're just gonna have to click play to listen...

Excerpt from episode 88 of Techcess

"So our anonymous hacker told us several stories of real world hacking missions that he had been involved with. Now, of course, we don't know who he worked for, we don't know which country he was from, we don't know who they were targeting. And I'm certainly not able to recall everything that he told us about. But I will tell you about one story that he told us. This was a mission where they had a target, and the target was a CISO. It's a chief information security officer of a large company. Don't know what industry they were in or why they were targeting this guy. And they believed that he was living out of a safe house, out in the countryside, but they didn't know where. And what the hacking group did was they created a fake LinkedIn profile and over the course of a few weeks, they used LinkedIn to build a relationship with the target."

Tech Topics covered in this episode of Techcess:

  • The VIP experience at UK Cyber Week
  • What is the event and who should attend?
  • The anonymous hacker and how his team tracked down a CISO

How can you protect your business against ransomware attacks?

In this episode of Techcess, Mark Riddell explains what aspects of your business the ransomware boogeyman can attack, and how you can ensure you're ready to defend!

He explains how there are five clear steps to keeping the ransomware hackers at bay, and ensuring your business doesn't become just another victim!

Busting the ransomware myth

Ransomware attacks are increasing, making it essential that you're armed with the knowledge on how to better protect your business.

A lot of business owners and leaders dismiss this from their task list, saying "oh it will never happen to us" or "hackers don't target companies like ours" but the opposite is true.

Hackers go after the easy pickings, and they'll be able to predict your level of protection based on the size of your company.

All it takes is one person in your business to take the wrong action with a rogue email, and everything can be lost in seconds.

One very specific way of ensuring this doesn't happen...

This topic is actually covered extensively in the first part of this episode with step one.

Training your staff.

If you're a business decision maker and you've been resistant to figuring out your staff's cyber security training, then you should definitely listen to this episode.

You might be surprised!

"How great would it be if your IT support company did this for you and were able to provide you with a report showing the patch health of your systems? That would be a much better way than simply relying on your team to do this by themselves. m3 Networks weekly patch management is included as part of our IT support package, so all of our customers never have to worry about software updates. Do you know if your IT support company does this? If you're not sure, I recommend that you go and ask them!"

Tech Topics covered in this episode of Techcess:

  • Step 1 - staff training
  • Step 2- data backup
  • Step 3- software updates

We're revealing the top 5 industries our 'delightful' cyber criminals love to target!

Hi, this is Mark Riddell, host of the Techcess podcast.

We talk about cyber criminals and cyber security on this podcast a lot. But in this episode we're actually going to list the industries most valuable to attack. If you work in any of them, you'll need to send the episode to your boss to listen to, asap!

As I recently spoke at a Cyber Lunch and Learn event, a question caught my attention: Do cybercriminals target all businesses equally? The answer is no, and in this episode, we'll explore the industries most vulnerable to cybercrime.

However, there's one industry on the list that may not apply to our listeners, yet it's still a shocker given the level of expertise and the value of the data within that industry!

But before we dig into the details, let's start with a quick introduction.

Despite warnings, cyber security still a massive threat to UK businesses!

Cybersecurity is a subject we've covered extensively on this podcast, and for good reason - it's the number one threat facing businesses today.

In the midst of a global digital transformation, where technology is advancing and businesses are moving towards the cloud, AI, blockchain, and Web 3.0, the possibilities seem limitless.

However, with these advancements come vulnerabilities, and cybercrime is on the rise year after year.

In fact, the pandemic and the shift to remote work have only accelerated cyberattacks.

In fact, the threat of cyber attacks has increased!

With employees working from home or public spaces, securing an IT estate has become more complex than ever. Unfortunately, cybersecurity remains an underinvested area for many businesses—most don't even have a dedicated cybersecurity budget.

This podcast aims to shed light on this critical issue and encourage businesses to take proactive measures.

Now, it's important to note that cyber criminals don't target only big tech giants and government agencies. Small and medium-sized businesses are equally at risk and often fall victim to cyberattacks.

The consequences are not limited to immediate financial loss but can also entail long-term damage to a company's brand, loss of customer trust, potential legal costs, and the high expenses associated with recovery.

the stats and facts

In this episode I'll be revealing the percentage of cyber attacks that target small businesses, and how many of those businesses that suffer an attack go out of business within six months.

The impact may not be immediate, but the implications on cash flow, sales, and customer loyalty can deal a devastating blow.

You'll definitely want to listen in as we get into the top five industries most affected by cybercrime in the UK.

Whether you're in these industries or not, this episode will provide valuable insights to help you safeguard your business.

What you'll learn from listening to this episode of Techcess
  • Does cybercrime affect all industries equally?
  • The significance of cyber security in all businesses.
  • The impact of global digital transformation and technological advancements.
  • The double-edged sword of technology, with limitless possibilities and vulnerabilities.
  • Why we're not mentioning industries least affected by cybercrime!
  • Some statistics around cyberattacks on small businesses.

Timestamped Summary:

00:00:00 Top 5 industries affected by cybercrime 00:04:09 Cybersecurity overlooked: Businesses lack budget and awareness. 00:07:38 Cybersecurity: Can you outrun the bear? 00:11:35 Anthem cyberattack: stats and numbers. 00:15:56 Cyberattacks on manufacturing - the impacts.

This recent malware threat is unusually smart.

Targets receive a convincing looking email that appears to come from a widely used e-signature platform.

How’s the January health kick going?

Lots of us take our health seriously – once a year, anyway – and it’s good to spend time thinking about whether you’ve been looking after yourself (and better still, doing something about it).

Your doctor would probably like to see you once a year for a health check, just to pick up any small problems and stop them getting worse.

It’s exactly the same principle with your technology.

A new study has revealed that a host of worrying online behaviour has become almost normalised among many young people. And much of this activity is illegal.

We’re not talking serious cyber crime such as ransomware attacks or stealing data.

Techcess: embracing technology and IT support for success in your business - How your Information Technology (IT) and cyber security service provider should be managing your account - Techcess technology podcast
play

12/08/21 • 18 min

How your IT and cyber security service provider should be managing your account Is your cyber security arrangement future-proofed enough to protect your business? Trust: very important in cyber security! And not just the trust in the technology itself...

You always hope that when you hire someone to manage your cyber security and wider technology requirements for you, you can trust them.

You can relax knowing they'll carry out what's required with your best interests at front of mind.

But what if you're not in regular contact with them?

Can you be certain that your chosen provider is doing everything they can, to keep your business protected and running smoothly?

(If your business doesn't have good I.T. support, it can feel as sick as the dog in this vet's office!)

Ever-evolving risks

The cyber security and Information Technology (I.T.) industry is constantly developing, with new threats and risks emerging all the time.

It's important that you're always updated on those changes so your cyber security provider can ensure they have a complete understanding of what arrangements are in place to protect your business from cyber attacks or other vulnerabilities.

With some providers feeling it's sufficient just to renew their contract every year as long as you've been given an update around key issues such as software updates for example, this could mean crucial safety measures being missed out which leaves you vulnerable!

In addition, if there were any additions or amendments required following these conversations, how would anyone know?

This is why m3 Networks address this issue with their own clients in a very intentional way, which Mark Riddell will explain in the episode.

Bear this in mind.

With no documentation kept about any specific requirements agreed upon between both parties means potential cyber vulnerabilities can go undetected.

It's vital that cyber security providers regularly review arrangements to ensure they're still effective at protecting businesses from the latest cyber risks facing businesses today.

Also, there could be changes in legislation which could also have an impact on how you run your business.

(When was the last time your I.T. and cyber security provider got on a call with you? Was it contract renewal time?!)

Post continues below....

Meanwhile, some housekeeping...
