If you’re deciding between a laser printer or an inkjet printer then here are some brief tips. Laser printers may cost slightly more on average but are the better choice for most people due to their low cost per page, particularly if you print mostly in black and white and at higher volumes.
However, if you’re a photographer or looking for a printer to give you photolike, color-rich prints, you don’t print much (also remember that the ink cartridge will dry up if you don’t use it enough), you want to print on unusual paper/material, or simply don’t have the space for a laser printer, an inkjet is a way to go. Buying online requires you to read through the specifications to ensure the printer is compatible with the computer you have and also its networking capabilities via wired or wi-fi. Buying in-store gives you better look at the quality of prints before buying.
