The taste, look, and smell of our sex organs is such a taboo topic that many of us have never dared to explore what's normal for us. In the beautiful and messy world of sex, we are always interacting with other peoples' microbes and that can play a role in our genital hygiene. But it's so important for us to get comfortable with what is normal for us because when our vaginal health suffers, so does our experience of pleasure and the enjoyment of sex.

In this episode, Moira and I talk about the idea of "normal" versus "common," the ill effects of going overboard on genital hygiene, and the complications that can arise when medical treatment is not being offered to partners who are cross-contaminating each other.

We have had many people asking us how to have the sort of difficult conversations around sex that we have been highlighting on the show, so today we're talking with Pejman Hoviatdoost about better sex communication. Pejman is a clinical psychologist whose job revolves around people having successful conversations with each other -- both about sex and about pretty much anything else you can think of.

Pejman and I agree that communication is the beginning of any sexual relationship, that better sex starts with better communication, and that better communication starts with yourself. So he and I talk about why it is so important not to make assumptions when speaking with your partner about sensitive subjects and the crucial difference between what we mean and what we say. We also talk about why self-awareness is so key to having healthy conversations with your loved ones and what we can do to cultivate our sense of self-awareness.

Today, I have two amazing guests, singers and songwriters ASTON and Pace Randolph, who know a thing or two about how music and lyrics can change our mindset. We also talk about how music acts as an education and a conversational starter -- and how recently, through music, I have been able to connect with many parts of myself that turn me on. Pace Randolph is a singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. His single Walking in Pieces has been played on Ash London Live in Australia and WEEFF Radio in the Netherlands. Besides making music, he also hosts his podcast Embracing Imperfect.

Gabriela is also the founder and director of The Rosa Institute, an organization dedicated to improving clinical results and advancing scientific knowledge in reproductive medicine to help couples create healthy babies, despite previous challenges.

She is a Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health awarded scholar where she pursued her Master’s in Public Health (Clinical Effectiveness) degree (complete in late 2021). Currently applying to the Doctor of Public Health program at Harvard, Gabriela already holds a Master of Science in Medicine (Reproductive Health and Human Genetics), a Bachelor of Health Science, and is trained in numerous health disciplines, including naturopathy, nutrition, and botanical herbal medicine.
