
Brandi Morin: An Indigenous Woman's Voice Changing the World through Journalism

Brandi Morin is an award-winning French/Cree/Iroquois journalist from Treaty 6, AB, Canada. For the last ten years, Brandi has specialized in sharing Indigenous stories through her career in journalism. Brandi's voice as a journalist has contributed to reconciliation in Canada’s political, cultural and social environments. Brandi's most notable work is published/broadcasted with Al Jazeera English, the National Observer, the Toronto Star, Power & Politics, CTV National, CBC Newsnet, the New York Times, CBC Indigenous and many others. Brandi won a Human Rights Reporting award from the Canadian Association of Journalists in April of 2019 for her work with the CBC's Beyond 94 project tracking the progress of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.
In our conversation, Brandi shares how her story of resilience and self-empowerment helped her to discover her gift for sharing stories, and how her choices helped her to create a healing and healthy pathway for her children. Brandi Morin exemplifies how crucial it is to have Indigenous voices representing Indigenous stories in journalism, as she brings forth an authentic voice and creates space for Indigenous perspectives.

Francine Cunningham, a Cree, Metis writer, artist and educator discusses how her journey of self-discovery and family histories have influenced her work. Her most recent book, on/me, (Caitlin Press, 2019) is telling of Francine's life that has collected many beautiful, challenging and rich experiences as an Indigenous woman that she has encountered throughout her life. Though Francine has survived grief and loss, she has drawn from the beauty and strength of her cultures to thrive through her artistic gifts and share her creative spirit with many Indigenous youth and communities. Francine is a nurturer as this is evident in her teaching practice where she creates safe and caring spaces for her students. Francine inspires us to think about how we can access the arts to heal ourselves and to rediscover who we are and where we come from. Francine's work is purposeful, and she exudes the beauty we can discover in our lives when we connect with our gifts and keep our spirit of curiosity and self-discovery alive.
