Why Brandon Beane Drafts (Way) Better Than Most Think
Explicit content warning
03/27/25 • 46 min
It’s another edition of The Podbag on today’s Talking Buffalo and Patrick Moran is responding to a bunch of outstanding questions and comments from listeners, including elaborating on why Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has done a much better job at drafting since 2018 than a lot of critics give credit for.
As with any general manager in sports, it’s low hanging fruit to point out every draft miss that GM has made. Beane’s certainly had some noticeable misses in the early rounds, including Kaiir Elam, Boogie Basham and Cody Ford to name a few, not to mention some rookies from last year who appear to have a long way to go. That said Patrick not only goes over several of Beane’s best hits but goes deeper, revealing who the next prospect picked by another team in the draft was at the same position. It’s insane to think what kind of shape the Bills would be in if Beane took the same positional player after guys likes Terrel Bernard, Khalil Shakir, Christian Benford, Spencer Brown and others.
Also, there’s pertinent questions submitted regarding the importance of James Cook and also how critical is for Keon Coleman to take a huge step in year two—or is it actually?
Plus, reaction to Stefon Diggs going to New England, a move Patrick would love to see the Bills make before Week one and the high profile Stevie Johnson vs Darrelle Revis Twitter feud brewing. That plus a few hockey topics, Patrick discusses his favorite new TV show and much more.
Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red’s at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it’s a great place to drink and have a great time.

Ranking The Buffalo Bills Most Important Players
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation for their weekly chat, this time focused on counting down the Buffalo Bills players likely to be most instrumental to the team’s success this coming season.
To make things a little less obvious the guys disqualify Josh Allen from the equation since he’s the clear but number one choice. Patrick runs down his list with Matt having insight on each player and if he agrees with where they’re placed on the list, and at least a few at or near the top may surprise you.
Not on the list are a handful of prominent players and Patrick explains why he doesn’t have James Cook, Khalil Shakir or Matt Milano that while important, aren’t in his top 10.
Also, Matt has some thoughts on Amari Cooper, Von Miller and Rasul Douglas all remaining unsigned this deep into free agency as of this recording. Plus, is it now obvious that the Bills are taking a cornerback high in the draft? That, Stefon Diggs is reportedly running at full speed again, potential NFL surprises this year and much more.
You can follow Matt on Twitter @MattRichWarren and be sure to check out Buffalo Rumblingsfor your (really good) daily Bills content.

How Much Can Bills Still Add To D-Line, Plus Some Sabres Optimism?
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Chris Ostrander (Two in the Box) to discuss how much more the Buffalo Bills can still add to their defensive line given their unique situation as well as some actual reasons for optimism for the Buffalo Sabres.
Brandon Beane and his Bills find themselves in a bit of a bind. New additions Michael Hoehct and Larry Ogunjobi are both suspended for the first six games but when they return for Week seven, if the unit stays healthy they could find themselves as part of at least nine defensive lineman already on the active roster. Of course, that’s before next month’s NFL draft, where Beane’s almost certain to add more talent via rookie picks. The guys discuss how much may end up being too much and if there’s going to be two rookies as high picks on the roster, who can end up being the odd man out, again muddled up by the suspension of two guys who’ll miss a third of the season.
Sticking with the Bills the guys also discuss how they’re feeling about a month out from the draft in terms of what Beane may (or may not) have up his sleeve. Do Patrick or Chris sense a big Beane move coming? They also spend a few talking about the offense including who’s more important to their 2025 success— Dalton Kincaid or Keon Coleman.
Turning over to the Sabres, they continue to be bottom feeders in the NHL but for today at least, the guys are discussing some of the reasons for optimism beyond Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin. Chris talks about what he’s seen and liked from players such as JJ Peterka, Ryan McLeod, Jason Zucker and Alex Tuch. That and plenty more!
Be sure to follow Chris on X at @2ITB_Buffalo and check out the Two in the Box blog in addition to the Instigator Podcast.
