Talk to People Podcast - #40 - Nana Amfo: Here's How to Talk to People at the Bar
play

09/25/23 • 63 min

The three most common places people meet others (including their romantic partners) are church, work, and the bar. So, more than likely, you may go out to a bar. But what are you supposed to do when you're there? How do you meet people? How do you make friends? What do you avoid?
Well I don't know the answer to these questions. I am so uneducated when it comes to navigating nightlife, but Nana has some ideas.
Nana Amfo is a cohost for the CruiseLine Podcast and the Creative Director and Cofounder of the fast growing fashion and lifestyle brand Alpha Gang.
He is a good person to talk to about this because he spends a lot of time reflecting on popular culture and what resonates with the general public.
In this episode expect to learn about:
- how to navigate nightlife
- why people should or shouldn’t go out
- the importance of hearing from God
- how to balance having a lot of acquaintances but few friends
- the impact alcohol has on social situations
- and the power of being yourself.
Remember to be yourself and that quantity of relationships matters much less than quality.

Emily Farley is a professional with 16 years of experience in the public health sector. She currently serves as the Director of Community Engagement at the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center. Her knack lies in fostering genuine connections and effective communication.

Emily was perfect for the podcast because of her ability to tell stories that connected people together. I believe that stories are a super power, and if you know how to properly tell a story, then you can create community, connection, and wonder.
In this episode, you can expect to hear:

  • how to ask questions with empathy
  • how to create an environment where people feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable
  • the art of graciously presenting other peoples' stories
  • how to navigate work and personal identity (& if they should even be separate)
  • why leadership can feel burdensome and how to respond
  • methods to make you a better listener (and care more about people)
  • and what book we would write if we had the chance

She is an alumna of the Leadership Lawrence class of 2019 and an active member of the 2023 class of Kansas Emerging Leaders. When not driving her professional pursuits, Emily embraces the busyness of life with her two children, two beagles, and her supportive husband.
Think about a great story someone recently told you. Bottle it up, and then challenge yourself to share it to someone else and pass it on.

Jeremy Newman is an educator, business owner, pilot, endurance athlete, and adventurer. He grew up in North Dakota, traveled the world, and found his way to Kansas.
Growing up in a foster home, Jeremy learned how to make deep connections in a loving yet ever-changing family. This episode was really important to me because I believe that most of our social confidence starts in our family. When we're young, we get to see how our parents treat each other, we learn how to make friends with siblings, and we interact with all different types of personalities at family events.
Being a part of the foster system could be a setback for some, but it made Jeremy more attuned to the importance of connection.
In this episode you can expect to hear about:

  • Jeremy's adoption story
  • how he decided to move across the world
  • what inspired him to become a teacher
  • how to create adventure in your own backyard
  • why language limits our world
  • one way to become more confident in class
  • and what I think the podcast adventure has been like so far.

Family is a gift. I'm grateful that Jeremy shared his story and I hope it inspired you to reflect on your's.

Talk to People Podcast - #30 - My Mom: Opening Up To Others Saved My Life
play

07/17/23 • 70 min

Allow me to introduce you all to one of my favorite people, my mom (Kim Miller).
If you want to hear someone who is a paragon of kindness, wisdom, and endurance, then you came to the right place. My mom has exemplified work ethic, determination, and imagination. But, one of the things we focus most on in this episode is how she showcased to me the importance of living your life with supportive people around you.
Kim is an active member of Al-Anon, NAMI, and Breast Cancer Support Groups. When I was a kid, I saw her choose to spend her time going to groups. Choosing to spend time around people definitely rubbed off on me.
The past year has been quite tough for our family, especially my mom. In January we learned that she had cancer in several parts of her body, including her skull. It's been incredibly scary, draining, and overwhelming. But it's given me motivation to work on the podcast because she listens to it while she's resting. And if I can't be there in person to comfort her then the least I can do is be in her ears.
In this episode we talk about:

  • the power of support groups
  • how to grieve as a family
  • my mom's reaction when she was diagnosed with cancer
  • why talking about bad news is a tricky thing
  • what I think about AA and Al-Anon
  • our experience with schizophrenia
  • why friends and family of alcoholics need community
  • how wrapping words around cancer helps everyone involved.

Keep your head up. If your family is currently navigating hard news, get together and take it day by day. Breathe. Talk about it.

Chris Austin is the Site Coordinator at Lawrence Boys & Girls Club.
I've often discussed the importance of an intergenerational community. If you have people in your life who are older than you and people who are younger than you, then you get to learn and teach. The greatest athletes have coaches and the greatest teachers have students. Its a timeless truth.
Chris is a great example of someone who is great at making an intergenerational impact. For over 10 years he has been mentoring younger people. Everyday, he is part of the staff leadership on-site, managing other staff, building mentors, and providing a consistent presence in countless peoples' lives.
There's a reason people choose to dedicate years of their lives to make a certain impact - and Chris has a great story. We get to explore that story, along with many other things.
In this episode you'll hear about:

  • one tip to remember your self-worth
  • the power of meditation and it's impact on emotional regulation
  • the concept of ego death and how Chris responds to adversity
  • how to mentor someone who's a teenager
  • the power of listening
  • why you should establish house rules before starting uno
  • when Chris fell so hard on his bike it changed his life trajectory
  • what it's like to be 14 days away from fatherhood
  • how to improve your recall
  • why impactful conversations don't always feel like they're impactful

Paige Freeman, a Louisville, Kentucky native, graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Communication degree, went over to University of Mississippi for a master's degree in Higher Ed, and is now a doctoral student at the University of Kansas for Higher Education Administration.
Paige currently serves as the Director of Student Programs with the KU Alumni Association. She takes pride in being an educator, dreamer, and joy curator who uses her voice and platform to "make academic and social experiences educationally rewarding" for all students navigating their collegiate careers that are culturally centered and meet all students' needs.
Paige and I have a lot in common. For instance, we both love people and we're both dreamers. But what struck me most about Paige was her ability to articulate the power of communication and how it brings people together who don't have a lot in common.
Communication is the epitome of a cultural experience. Where you grow up determines what words you use, how fast you talk, the way you enunciate, how loudly you speak, if you're a close-talker or not, and the list goes on. This episode is a great example of exploring something that we all deal with - yet don't often talk about.
In this episode you'll hear about:

  • codeswitching in daily conversations
  • the importance of emotional intelligence and expression
  • why people change their accents
  • why openness doesn't always mean vulnerability
  • the power of listening
  • how to tap into relational diversity
  • the benefits of racial affinity groups
  • one tip for extraverts to become better communicators
  • how to overcome rejection even if it means changing your path
  • what impact your culture has on the way you communicate

Kevin has served as Director for Young Life College at the University of Kansas for 13 years. His passion is to build meaningful relationships with college students to help them encounter Jesus Christ, while also developing others to do the same.
When I first met Kevin, I was taken by his ability to make people (me at the time) feel heard and valued. He strives to help people discover themselves, and oftentimes, that means A LOT OF LISTENING. This is a rare skill - but it's an important one.
I hear people talk about college as being the glory days. While this can be the case, I also know that college is a time where people struggle with immense homesickness, peer pressure, overwhelming stress about a confusing professional future, and mental health crises.
I am encouraged by people who care for college students because I was once a college student, and I know first-hand that the need for an encouraging community, wise friends, and thoughtful conversation is immense.
Listen out for:

  • how to decide on a tough decision that will affect your future
  • why your failures help you look like Michelangelo's David
  • how to create a culture that doesn't exist or change an existing one
  • why you should be a part of a multigenerational community
  • and a funny story where I chickened out of something and had to go back and own up to it.

Annie Miller is a former teacher of relational communication, an expert of belongingness, and an all-around all-star. Annie and I met in grad school at Wake Forest University where we were both teaching assistants. I invited a few people to go to a basketball game, and everyone backed out, except Annie. That basketball game ended up being our first unofficial date - and a few years later we were finding someone to dogsit our golden retriever while we were getting married.
In this episode we talk about the importance of healthy communication in romantic relationships, how sibling relationships contribute to belongingness, the need for consistent and repeated social interactions, why I always get food envy yet still order the wrong food, how to become more emotionally agile, and what our FAVORITE date has been in the past 12 months.
Annie is the best - she has been the brains and beauty of this whole podcast operation. If you love Annie, then you'll love this conversation. After listening, if you could like & rate the podcast, as well as share it with someone who would enjoy it!

Talk to People Podcast - #49 - Reviving Third Places for Millennials & Gen Z
play

12/05/23 • 22 min

The withering away of a cultural cornerstone - third places. This episode is designed for the connector who wants to upgrade their community. I share research why it matters, a story of something that I would have never expected, and a way for you to be a third place creator.
Want to see the visuals? Watch the YouTube 4K version.
Your first place is where you live, your second place is where you work, your third place is where you become a part of society, build community, and get nourished.
Unfortunately, these places are going by the wayside due to digital influences, parks being turned into parking garages, and public places charging just to be there. But, it doesn't have to be this way.
