You can use many words when describing the Florida Keys but conventional isn't one of them.
In honor of the Keys Independence Day coming up on April 23, on this episode i talk about one of my favorite Tales from South Florida: the time when Key West just said, "To heck with it. We're out of here!", becoming the first government of any kind to break from the United States since the Civil War. And then suing the U.S. for $1,000,000,000 in aid.
And they didn't stop there.
Join me as I Take a TALK Down Memory Lane and recall the day that Key West Seceded from the Union and all that followed.

TV Shows: Flipper and Miami Vice
Tales From South Florida

When Joseph Young named his local parcel of land Hollywood, he was hoping to mirror in South Florida the burgeoning film industry of its Californian namesake. While the aspiration seemed lofty, South Florida did indeed become a cinematic hotspot, especially during the mid to late 20th century. This week, we delve into two iconic television shows that not only showcased the unique allure of South Florida but also left an indelible mark on American culture.
Perhaps no two shows had as much impact as a little half-hour drama about a family living in the Keys with a pet dolphin and another about two cops fighting the drug cartels of the 1980's.
In this week's episode we look back on these two entertaining yet vastly different takes on our area and lifestyles.
It's time to Take a TALK down Memory Lane once more for the Tale of Flipper and Miami Vice.

Who was Zev Buffman and why should we celebrate him?
Well...he was the architect of the modern Broadway touring business, brought the Coconut Grove Playhouse to life again in the early-1960's, renovated, built or backed venues all-over South Florida, created a little event called the Coconut Grove Arts Festival and helped bring the NBA to Miami.
Oh, and he was a really nice man.

Pirates World
Tales From South Florida
01/31/24 • 15 min
Text me your favorite South Florida memory.
At one time it was listed as the 4th largest amusement park in the United Staes. Opened in 1967 and using service and entertainment concepts found at Disnleyland, but pre-Disney World, Pirates World was the go-to place for fun in the South Florida sun with 15 attractions including the original Steeple Chase ride from Coney Island.
Its history was a wild ride, (and we don't mean just the Log Flume from the New York World's Fair), highlighted by angry opposition from local politicians, rumors of injury and death in the park, and the drug-fueled concerts featuring rock-n-roll legends that contributed to its downfall. But for those of us who experienced it was a weekend and summer days destination promising exciting rides and a themed amusement park that pre-dated Disney World.
NOTE: The Cirque du Soleil offer expired April 2024.

Step into the glamorous world of Hemingway's, nestled in a historic building in downtown Hollywood, Florida. A haven for the famous and infamous alike, Hemingway's was more than just a restaurant; it was a legendary institution where culinary excellence met celebrity intrigue.
Diners were treated not only to unmatched food and service but also to the thrill of possibly rubbing elbows with Hollywood stars and icons. And let's not forget the unforgettable aroma of that garlic pumpernickel bread that tantalized the senses with every visit.
But Hemingway's held secrets beyond its delectable menu and star-studded clientele. Whispers circulated about a hidden bordello on the second floor, whispers of clandestine casino games, and tales of the bar salvaged from Yankee Stadium. And then there was the notorious connection to none other than Al Capone himself, adding an extra layer of mystique to this already enigmatic establishment.
Join us for a TALK down Memory Lane as we revisit the golden era of Hollywood dining, where Hemingway's reigned supreme and left an indelible mark on the hearts and palates of all who crossed its threshold.
