Episode 42 is the 3rd and final installment of our Southern Tribute. We could have easily spent 3 more episodes trying to cover everything, but we did our best in the 14+ hours trying to rep the South proper. Part 3 pays homage to the powerhouse labels such as No Limit, Cash Money, Suave House, Swisherhouse and Hypnotize Minds. We also got classics by Eightball & MJG, Fat Pat, DJ Screw, Arrested Development, Big Mike, K-Rino, Goodie Mob, Lil Keke, Curren$y, Z-Ro, Tru, Pastor Troy, Juvenile, T.I., Devin The Dude, DMG, Tela, Lil Wayne and Fesu to name a few. After compiling the West Coast Classic series, the South was overdue. Thanks to all the artists featured on these 3 very long episodes, you are the reason this happened! Thanks for your years of work, your classic material and your love for the South. We hope the wait was worth it!

Episode 64 is the 4th show we've recorded during this damn quarantine. If you’re going to Hiero Day, EPISODE 50 is going to enhance your experience exponentially. If you aren’t attending, this is the next best thing. We interviewed Del, Domino, Casual & Tajai and we’ve got stories for days! We talk about Del doing shrooms with Q-Tip to Casual freestyling with Pharoahe Monch at the Gavin. Of course, we touch on Casual vs. Saafir and the impact it had on battle rap. We find out Ice Cube wasn’t a fan of Gang Starr and thought Kool Keith was too weird (ya don’t say?). Del explains what it was like not only being cousins with Ice Cube, but their musical similarities and his involvement earlier on in his career. We learn about Del’s feelings towards the Gorillaz, while Domino breaks down just about every Hiero collaboration imaginable. We talk I Wish My Brother George Was Here, ’93 Til Infinity, No Need For Alarm, Fear Itself, Like It Should Be and No Man’s Land. We discuss their rap dominance prior to being dropped by the label. Tajai’s breaks down his feelings towards the group’s sophomore album and the importance of each album sounding different.

Special guests Slug, Murs, Apathy, J-Zone, The Grouch & Breakbeat Lou also share their feelings on the Hiero collective and lace us with some of their fondest memories of the music. You’ll hear many gems and plenty of "LOL" moments, as well as plenty rewind moments on our Official Hiero Tribute show.

EPISODE 50 can be a fast burn or a slow one, we just hope the burn lasts forever because Hiero is forever!

Take It Personal - Take It Personal (Ep 45: Redman Tribute Part 1)
play

06/06/19 • 147 min

Redman is one of a kind. I really can’t think of another rapper like him. Not in style, not in sound and definitely not with his personality. As I told Redman during our interview, it’s hard to name another rapper of as likable as him.

Redman is ridiculously funny, constantly entertaining and his energy is through the roof. Not to mention, he is honest to a fault. You have to love those qualities in a person, let alone a rapper. In terms of rapping tho, he’s been doing this officially since 1990. That’s almost 3 decades! Most rappers don't have that kind of longevity and certainly most haven't been able to maintain a career without their skills deteriorating. If you listen to Redman today, he’s as sharp as he was back when he debuted with EPMD. During this 2-part tribute, we pay homage to Redman aka Funk Doctor Spock aka Mr. Reggie Noble. We cover the classics, the remixes and both the hip-hop and R&B collabos. We got all the Def Squad collabos too. We cover the joints with Cypress Hill, KRS-One, Boyz II Men, Wu Tang, D'Angelo, LL Cool J all the way to MC Eiht.

A rapper of this magnitude deserves a proper tribute, which is why we decided to make this into a 2-parter. On Part 2, we feature our Redman interview, as well as few more necessary mixes to help properly celebrate his career. You can currently stream that interview on our Vevo channel www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfOs8fo0nIk if you don’t wish to wait for part 2. Part 1 is just a taste, so stay tuned as we got more dope shit in store for our Redman tribute.

We’re joined by Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty, who sits with the crew to discuss one of hip hop's greatest eras. We hear stories about how it started for them, the Masta Ace beef, working with Bobbito, The Alchemist, Rashida Jones, Beetlejuice, Kool Keith, Pharoahe Monch, Eminem and Cage. During the late 90s and early 00's, Eastern Conference Records was a staple in independent hip-hop. Who better to tell vivid tales of the indie hip-hop movement than one of the guys responsible for it?

What made this era one of the greatest? The music was fresh, innovating, original, honest and most importantly fun. D-I-Y in full effect. Record stores in full effect. Online chat groups where you shared music was definitely in effect. That feeling of excitement while scarfing down a slice of pizza or Gray's Papaya because you couldn't wait to see what Fat Beats on 6th Ave had. When Fat Beats wasn't enough for your fix, you went to the LES to peep A-1 or took the iron horse to Fulton Street, to check out Beat Street and grab a treat from Juniors after. The days in New York during the indie hip-hop movement were magical.

Now, let's re-live those memories and magic this era gave us. Enjoy the show!

Episode 39 features good music along with The Good People. They just released their new album “Good For Nuthin” and it's already being heralded as Album of The Year by many. We chop it up with both Saint and Emskee and discuss the album, their come-up and drop a few joints off the new album too. We also have bangers from Real Live, Smoothe Da Hustler, Al Tariq, PMD, Sir Menelik, Killarmy, Chino XL and ridiculous DJ 360 remix, plus new music by Da Buze Bruvaz, Justo The MC, Pharoahe Monch and an exclusive by Apathy!

Take It Personal - Take It Personal (Erick Sermon Interview)
play

11/27/18 • 86 min

We have one of the most exciting, informative and legendary guest interviews in the show's history - Erick Sermon! The Green-Eyed Bandit is an open book and doesn't hesitate to "go there" on many topics you'll want to hear about. We talk about the early years of meeting PMD and landing their first record deal for $1500. We talk about how Russell brought them to Def Jam and then how Clive Davis forked over a cool 4 million to sign Erick after Music had dropped. We talk about touring with Run-DMC. We talk Craig Mack, Biggie, 50 Cent, Lyor Cohen, Ludacris, Nas and of course, Redman. We touch on the PMD beef and the possibility of a reunion. Erick says his best years of his life was when they broke-up and he went solo. We find out that Erick and Ice Cube were best friends and that E helped him prepare for going solo as well. We find out that Dr. Dre had originally turned down the opportunity to remix "The Platform" by Dilated Peoples, so E stepped in and cashed out after making the beat in just 30 minutes. We also learn many great (GOAT) producers turned down to work with Shaq, but Erick was game. We talk about Erick's rim shop and what it meant to Atlanta and specifically, the hip-hop scene. And yes, Keith Murray kicked David Banner out of the shop once too! Erick doesn't hold back about anything. Whether he was messing around with Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes or Wendy Williams, he goes there. We learn Eric B. is still the guy to get things done and was responsible for getting Marvin Gaye's family to clear the sample. We talk Def Squad and learn Erick isn't a big fan of their cover of Rapper's Delight. We find out how Red & Meth also derailed the Def Squad. And we finally find out why we aren't hearing more of Erick and Redman. This description sounds like we're giving it all away, but we haven't even scratched the surface. You don't want to miss this interview!

Take It Personal - Take It Personal (Little Brother Interview)
play

02/20/24 • 153 min

Every once in a while, an interview turns more into a conversation amongst rap dudes. We anticipated having Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte for just 45 minutes, so when I tell you the interview lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes, it tells you just how funny and relatable these guys are to talk to. We covered an awful lot, yet it wasn't nearly enough once it was over. We discuss the May the Lord Watch documentary, their love for Beck or Bjork and their hate for Sci-Fi and its magical white people. We touch on their ridiculous stretch of music that ultimately burnt them out. We get into the brilliance of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Cube's Death Certificate, which is better Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, and Dominican broads making chili con queso. We also talk Ghostface, Murs, Common, The Roots, Evidence, Kendrick Lamar and their affection for Outkast. I saw a great quote the other day and it said, "If Wu-Tang is for the kids, Little Brother is for the ones that raise them." Thanks to Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, Andre Barnes and our longtime homie, I.D. for the idea. Stay tuned as we prepare to drop our Little Brother tribute in early March. Enjoy the discussion.
