We Need To Talk with Kristen
TABOOBS
05/09/23 • 140 min
A few people have mentioned they'd like for us to talk about issues in marriage, so here we are! When it comes to marriage, things aren't always perfect. In fact, you have to be intentional with your marriage. Kristen and her husband, with 3 kids (and one on the way), somehow, try to have one date night a week. Amazing goals! Her and I both know that we are imperfect people with imperfect marriages and sometimes it's nice to not see the facade of perfect families. Social media can be a bad tool when it comes to comparisons. Kristen shared her struggles with social media comparisons and how she decided to eliminate social media from her life right now. During this episode we basically discover that WE are the issues in our own marriages. We need to be communicating to our partners our wants and needs and not expecting them to read our minds. Communication is KEY!

Lauren shares her story about her son who was surprisingly born different than his twin brother. Lack of knowledge leads this to be a taboo topic. Momming is hard as it is, but then you add medical complexities and you are on a whirlwind that you don't know how to navigate at the beginning. There is a lot of learning involved, friendship changes, and community showing up that you may not expect. Asking questions is okay! Preferably "What is your diagnosis"? over "What's wrong with you?".

TAR Syndrome:
(from medlineplus.gov)
Thrombocytopenia-absent radius (TAR) syndrome is characterized by the absence of a bone called the radius in each forearm and a shortage (deficiency) of blood cells involved in clotting (platelets). This platelet deficiency (thrombocytopenia) usually appears during infancy and becomes less severe over time; in some cases the platelet levels become normal.
Thrombocytopenia prevents normal blood clotting, resulting in easy bruising and frequent nosebleeds. Potentially life-threatening episodes of severe bleeding (hemorrhages) may occur in the brain and other organs, especially during the first year of life. Hemorrhages can damage the brain and lead to intellectual disability. Affected children who survive this period and do not have damaging hemorrhages in the brain usually have a normal life expectancy and normal intellectual development.
The severity of skeletal problems in TAR syndrome varies among affected individuals. The radius, which is the bone on the thumb side of the forearm, is almost always missing in both arms. The other bone in the forearm, which is called the ulna, is sometimes underdeveloped or absent in one or both arms. TAR syndrome is unusual among similar malformations in that affected individuals have thumbs, while people with other conditions involving an absent radius typically do not. However, there may be other abnormalities of the hands, such as webbed or fused fingers (syndactyly) or curved pinky fingers (fifth finger clinodactyly). Some people with TAR syndrome also have skeletal abnormalities affecting the upper arms, legs, or hip sockets.
Other features that can occur in TAR syndrome include malformations of the heart or kidneys. Some people with this disorder have unusual facial features including a small lower jaw (micrognathia), a prominent forehead, and low-set ears. About half of affected individuals have allergic reactions to cow's milk that may worsen the thrombocytopenia associated with this disorder.

Welcome to our first group episode! 1 in 4 women experience miscarriage. I had 4 amazing women surrounding me, willing to share their stories of their multiple losses and how it affected them/still affects them today. Please be sure to listen with caution, as we discuss miscarriage in detail. I am so sorry if you ever experienced a miscarriage. I hope everyone listening is able to find strength with this group of women discussing their loss. They do a wonderful job discussing the taboo topic as a whole and it is interesting to learn what people were unaware of, what they learned throughout the process, and what is helpful/unhelpful during these times. Thanks to technology, we are able to slightly alter our timelines on when we would like to start a family. Given the circumstances, whether it be a career, haven't found someone to start a family with, etc., we now have the option of freezing our eggs to be able to increase our chances of becoming pregnant in the future. As we age, we lose more and more eggs. If we freeze our eggs, we are able to then do IVF, when ready, and possibly be successful and become pregnant. However, this episode comes at a time where IVF is coming into question in some states where some people believe embryos are babies and therefore are voting against the right to perform invitro and increase the ability for those who are unable to start a family naturally. 1 in 5 people deal with infertility. If this ideology gets adopted by more people, this could be detrimental to many people who desire to have children.
NOTE: We do get into political talk during this conversation, as this is directly related to freezing eggs. Although not all of us will agree, my hope is that we are still able to have the civil conversations surrounding this issue.
Thank you for listening to this episode of the TABOOBS podcast! As always, please share it with your friends and family so we can help destigmatize taboo women topics.

When you have a baby, they talk about leaning on "your village". Most people don't have a village to lean on. It's not like it used to be where families all lived together and everyone helped everyone. We all live in our individual homes, with our nuclear families, leaving it to the parents to do it all such as stay up with the kids, cook/clean, shower, heal, breastfeed, do self care, bond, teach, work on your marriage/partnership, get out of the house, laundry, experiences, etc. These feel like impossible tasks that everyone is expected to complete perfectly and with a smile. It feels impossible because it is and we weren't meant to live that way. We were meant to have villages to help. So what does a village look like in modern society? It means you have to pay for it. I had no idea there was a postpartum doula as an option. I knew of night nurses, etc., but I didn't realize the postpartum doula is there to just take care of the mom. I love this, because everyone's focus is always the baby. Tune into this episode to hear Cheryl discuss what her job is like as a postpartum doula and what she offers new moms. She is a joy to listen to!
