Swords and Satire

Swords and Satire

Jamie Mockel, Cassidy Williams, Jack Olander

We are your fantasy hosts three - Jamie, Cassidy, and Jack - and we take a philosophical and humorous approach to discussing fantasy movies and other media. We are all lifelong scholars, who love to analyze the media we consume, but can't help joking around as well, because we are also silly people at heart. On Swords & Satire we review both classic and modern fantasy movies and media, and take an in depth look at the themes, scenes and lore within each one. We highlight the epic moments and features of each film, and treat them with the respect they deserve, taking each one as seriously as a piece of art. We also release mini episodes every other week, in which we act out a humorous skit about the movie we previously discussed. Sometimes we just need that extra avenue to get out our creative ideas. And sometimes we even discuss fantasy games or novels! Listen in wherever you get your podcasts to hear our witticisms, nerdy banter, and love for all things fantasy!

In this episode family and frenemies separate only to converge later against their foes in a giant clusterfuck sword fight. But hey, that’s how you know you’re watching The Witcher! This episode also includes a lot of political intrigue that we endeavor to unpack for you, and we try to get to the bottom of who is on the other end of that owl that Dara and Dijkstra keep talking to. We also delve into the patriarchy of the Brotherhood, and explore the mage’s problematic relationship to magic. So listen, and then share your hot takes with us on social media to @swordsandsatire!

Swords and Satire - Episode 152 - Howl’s Moving Castle
play

07/30/22 • 75 min

This week we cover a quaint isekai anime fantasy movie about an enchanted castle, a cursed prince, an old cleaning lady with a secret, and a young shyster in training, who are all looking for love and friendship in a time of war. But we Satirists know what we are looking for...it’s the chance to dream about the beautiful, magical boy Howl! And while his castle would be a great place to cuddle in, it’s really all just held together with shoestring and whimsy, just like our show.

Hey there fantasy fans, and welcome to our first Satire TV episode, in which we talk about fantasy TV shows! Listen in to hear about this new format for our show, and don’t worry, we do our best to be as spoiler free as possible, just in case you are watching along with our show! Our first series will be on The Witcher, starting with the first episode, The End’s Beginning, and we will follow this series every other week in between our regular movie episodes. In this episode we talk about the magic and dark prophecies in the Witcher world, as well as how certain themes run throughout the episode, such as the interplay between the patriarchy and gender roles, mutations and emotional states, how destiny and fate shape character arcs, and the various definitions of personhood and what it means to be a monster.

This week it’s time for another Satire TV as we cover episode five of The Witcher, in which Geralt and Jaskier stir up a genie, causing them to cross paths with Yennefer at long last in search of a cure. This episode also introduces the doppler, hired by the black knight of the Nilfgaardian army to kidnap Ciri and deliver her to them unharmed. This is also the episode colloquially known as the orgy episode. Enough said. Listen in to hear us talk about the interplay between pleasure and pain, how Yennefer is perpetuating a cycle of abuse, and the best way to take care of fantasy insomnia.

Swords and Satire - Episode 92 - The Black Cauldron
play

06/12/21 • 77 min

This week we cover Disney’s biggest animated flop, which became a cult classic and has a prime space in our hearts, The Black Cauldron. This movie subverts classic fantasy tropes about destiny, teaching us that nothing is written in stone. The story turns the usual prophecy narrative on its head, not only by having an oracular pig, but also by placing the focus on the problem to be solved, and not on a chosen one. We like the idea that anyone could rise up to face a problem and become a hero along with their friends and allies they meet along the way. We also talk about the cool magical artifacts in the movie, all of which seem to have a mind of their own, as well as beings that are so evil and so wizard. And we ask the important questions like, Which came first, the cauldron or the ring? Listen, and enjoy. (sound effects courtesy of zapsplat.com)
