Let’s talk about Superman and Lois Season 3 Episode 2

S03E2 - “Uncontrollable Forces”

Directed by: Elizabeth Henstridge

Written By:

Katie Aldrin

IMDB and Apple TV: Clark and Chrissy notice a small crack in Lois' game face; Sarah and Jordan have an awkward encounter; Lana receives a panicked phone call.

  • Lois Cancer Stuff
    • I don’t think I’m emotionally prepared to handle a Lois Lane illness portrayed by Bitsie. She’s too good of an actress, it’s going to wreck me.
    • Why didn’t Lois tell Clark about her health? That doesn’t seem realistic.
    • Clark is being very supportive as usual
    • Fuck, Cancer. I don’t want this. This fucking sucks. I have this personal thing about tv. I don’t want to see real shit. I want to escape into a fantasy.
      • “I was a little shocked when [the producers] first told me that’s what they wanted to do,” actress Elizabeth Tulloch tells TVLine. “But I actually think it’s pretty wonderful. This storyline hasn’t been done, and cancer is such a prevalent force in so many people’s lives. This villain is so relatable and so real, and more than anything it’s one that Clark and Superman can’t just go handle. For Superman, who is this all-powerful superhero, to be faced with something he’s completely powerless against is even more grounding for the show, and it places a greater emphasis on the strength of us as a couple and the family dynamic. I thought it was exciting, and I hope the fans feel the same way.”
      • “We reached out to so many people — doctors, oncologists, people who had been through it, spouses who have been through it, families that have been through it,” Fletcher tells TVLine. “All of our scripts have been vetted to make sure that it’s playing real, because we don’t want it to be taken lightly. We want to put Lois on a real journey that so many other women in the world are going through. Hopefully they can take solace in seeing that a character as iconic as Lois Lane is suffering the same thing, and to feel like they have someone to relate to. We thought long and hard about it, and we felt like we had something to say.” Fletcher expects fans to be surprised at how “in-depth” the show goes with Lois’ cancer battle without shifting the show’s established tone. “We’re not going to despair and darkness all the time,” he says. “We have a very hopeful family, and we hold onto that, but we’re never telling the audience that the threat isn’t real.” “It’s our arc for the season,” he adds. “It’s our villain for the season, to be honest.”
  • Wait, why couldn’t she give a full family history because of her mom?
  • “I promise I will never look at you any other way. We will get through this together. You’re gonna beat this thing, not a doubt in my mind”
  • The kid stuff
    • Sorry, Jordan is now just being pathetic and desperate. Give it up kid. But Sarah is very nice and loved that she gave him her oversized shirt
    • Party in Metropolis! Woooo!!! Now we’re seeing a little bit of Jonathan's “bad-boy" persona. I like it. “Fraternals Right?”
    • Ok what part of Metropolis is this?! Is this the suburbs? Gold Coast-ish?
    • Why was she annoyed he brought his TWIN BROTHER?Poor Jordan. He’s got the whole clumsy Clark thing but not on purpose.
    • Get it Nat!
    • SARAH’S WEARING A BOB DYLAN I WANT YOU 1966 SHIRT!
      • I Want You is the first track on side 2 of disc one on 1966’s Blonde on Blonde.
      • Obviously I’ve been searching for the shirt.
      • @msdylangirl on twitter found it!
    • This party is terrible. Get out of there kids! Just leave!
  • Clark and Lois
    • Love the little Clark/Lois reporter dynamic
    • “Do you think Harry has that early bird special” - Clark
    • Clark listens to her heartbeat to see if she’s lying.
    • “Get your hands off me! Don’t Touch me!” - Very Margo Kidder vibes
    • “We’re a team, best one I know”
    • I love that Lois was the one to talk her down, not Superman saving her
  • Manheim
    • So it looks like Otomotopia’s powers are sonic based and have changed a bit from the comics
    • George said, “It was always about the pride of Smallville”
    • Shotgun wounds but no bullets

Superman & Lois & Pals - 30 Days & 30 Nights - “How Many Times You Been Tied Up?”
play

04/01/22 • 34 min

Henry's notes:

Opening: Love Clark and Lois in bed. They’re my cozy mom and dad. Great shot of Superman flying out of the house over the farm. Very cool call back to Superman flying around the world in Superman The Movie. Love that he’s flying in a small circle to pick up speed. What was happening to him as he was going through? Was he breaking apart? Was he transforming into Bizarro?

Jordan: Training montage! Just needed “you’re the best around” or “eye of the tiger.” Disturbing but also comforting seeing the world struggling without Superman.

Lois/Sam/Jordan: Sorry Lois, I love you but I’m with Jordan. Chill, he has to help. It’s what Clark would do. Great voice of reason from Sam Lane. I do like that Lois is getting close to finding the dealers. Glad Jonathan finally came to his senses. It was getting silly. Really enjoy seeing Lois do her reporter getting into life threatening predicaments thing.

Jordan’s heat vision/freeze breath/knockout punch was a total video game move. The little smile, very reminiscent of Superman Returns, bullet eyeball scene. Sorry Jordan, you want to be a superhero and keep your secret, you can’t have a girlfriend. Read a comic book.

Irons Family: Steel helping out is great. Love that the news report called him “new Man of Steel?” Seems like lots of planes have engine failure in Superman/Supergirl’s universes. Also, again, where is Supergirl?

I like that Natalie can fix a super-suit and interdimensional space ship but can’t make waffles.

Natalie is mad at her dad flirting with Lana. Chill out kid. I can’t deal with her. Remember how last season I could barely stand the Cushings. This is how I feel about Natalie. I want to like her so much but instead of showing how awesome she is in the shop with her tools and tech it’s just blah blah drama with her. It’s annoying. I like John’s explanation. It’s totally reasonable. He’s entitled to move on. Having said that it was pretty upsetting seeing alternate Lois with baby Natalie and John Henry losing it.

Lana’s election: We laughed about election day coming but now that we know Superman has been gone for 1 month it makes sense. They don’t have projections on the local news? 57-43 what?

Funny to me that Coach Toxic Masculinity is supporting Lana.

Jeez, really hitting us over the head with the whole “Divorced dad sad apartment” cliche.

End: Whaaaat Superboy is Jonathan in Bizarro world because it’s the opposite of Jordan!

EPISODE 1 - “Whatever We Can Do To Help”

Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I’m Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody.

  • It’s been about 6 months since we’ve recorded. We have seen each other in person where we did a super hero media thing. We saw Spider-Man No Way Home together!
  • I also got to show you my Superhero action figure collection and my extensive DC Comics library.
  • I want to thank the more than 1100 people who downloaded our little pod. This started as an outlet for me to talk about Superman on TV and we really appreciate you for listening to us!

Let’s talk about Superman and Lois Season 2

S02E01 - “What Lies Beneath?”

Directed by

Gregory Smith

Writing Credits:

Brent Fletcher and Todd Helbing

Three months after Nat's arrival, things start to settle down. Sarah returns from camp and gives Jordan the cold shoulder, Clark and Lois fight, Lana throws herself into a mayoral campaign, Superman comes to terms with Sam's replacement, and earthquakes shakes Smallville.

Things we wanted at the end of last season:

Better costume - done. S looks brighter, and is set within the costume. The costume moves a bit when he moves around showing that he’s not wearing the fake padding anymore. Much more form fitting. As much as I like 5 o’clock shadow Clark, I still want clean shaven Superman.

Stories that make sense - kind of but the angry Lois thing, eh.

3 months later:

Lois - So are we to believe that Lois has just been an asshole to sweet, kind, sensitive, patient Clark and her CHILDREN for 3 months with zero explanation? DOesn’t sound like the Lois we’ve gotten to know. Her explanation was totally reasonable but THREE MONTHS?! “Dad, how long is she gonna be like this?” That’s some intense shit for a family. Lois is kinda acting like a moody teenager. It just wasn’t realistic to me that everything Clark said to her she found annoying. And the argument they had was just completely unreasonable. She’s short with Jordan but then mad when he doesn’t go into details about Sarah. Who cares that he got arrested at Atlas Pond? Who cares that he doesn’t want to talk about it? He’s being respectful.

Really interesting stuff with Lois’ mom being a deadbeat and abandoning her and Lucy. That would definitely harden someone like Sam. This isn’t something we’ve heard about before so it came as a bit of a surprise. Seemed odd though that a couple that previously had amazing communication, would take 3 months to have this talk. I guess Clark has super-patience as one of his powers.

Irons

What have John Henry and Natalie been doing for 3 months? Why did John Henry have to stop Natalie from running and hugging Lois?

Clark - Awesome dad, awesome partner. The way in which I fell in love with Bitsie Tulloch last season, I’m falling in love with Tyler. He gets this character. His talk with Lois is so supportive and his talk with his boys was so sweet and hilarious. When Jonathan mouths, “mom,” I laughed. Clark’s super smell thing with Jordan's cologne.

Super funny thing that Jonathan’s girlfriend said the same advice as clark and he’s just like “stupid teenagers.” and then being like, “oh Jonathan Come on!” when Lois is pissed about catching Jonathan with Candace.

Superman - BANGER of a way to show some Super feats. Superman lifting a freaking sub and the North Koreans saying, “Superman saved us” is just pure joy. I was smiling ear to ear. Rescuing people from an earthquake is also so super.

I’m enjoying the conversation about whether Superman is just for America or not. I sort of like this soft spoken, thoughtful General Anderson. What was affecting Superman’s super-senses? Kryptonite? Who were those Super beings? X-Kryptonite soldiers?

Cushings - Gotta say, I’m a little disappointed that Lana is just running this stranger’s (to us) campaign and she’s not running herself. I like Clark and Kyle bonding a little. Sarah’s weirdness around Jordan is totally relatable. And I don’t really care. I love that Smallville is cashing in on Superman to help the economy. Love the JLGL cut out of Superman.

Doomsday - It looks like they’re going to do some comic-accurate stuff. But I feel like we’ve seen Doomsday recently with BvS crap and Krypton.

EPISODE 10 - It Went By So Fast - "Everything good in my life came from you"

Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I’m Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody.

Best Superman Finale of all time, mostly because it was an actual Finale. And I think because of that and other things, it’s the best Superman tv series of all time.

EPISODE 9 - To Live And Die Again - “Do you like, need a hug?”

Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I’m Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody.

Let’s talk about Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 9 - To Live And Die Again

Written and Directed by:

Jai Jamison

The Apple TV and Imdb description is:

Lois struggles against the fallout of the debate; Clark uses Luthor's tactics against him, while Jonathan and Jordan prepare for an impending battle.

HENRY'S NOTES:

Should we approach this on its own or AS a penultimate series episode or both?

  • Kinda sad that Otis died off screen, like for the actor and character
  • I like that there are consequences to Clark thinking he went over the line “stooping to Luthor’s level”
  • “I do not need your help with this” is the wrong thing to say to your kid at any age.
  • It’s better that the consequences for Lois is that she can’t get advertisers, not her safety.
  • “Maybe it’s time we got into his head
  • Tyler Hoechlin merch! Finally! Can I get some of that?
    • I love when there’s Superman merch on tv
    • “Jordan’s loaded curly fries.” “On the kids menu?”
      • Jordan’s curly fries are amazing and I want them
  • Love that Jonathan wants to step up.
  • Gretchen Kelly is already dead off screen.
  • Superman in Luthor’s office. Inject it into my veins
    • Superman is carrying himself differently than he was as Clark
    • He’s getting into Luthor’s head and I love it
    • “Enjoy your freedom Lex, it’s running out. Nice tie
      • There does seem to be some history between Superman and Luthor
  • I appreciate that Lois is pissed but in real life in 2024, she could just start her own podcast or site, or network and would get tons of advertisers.
  • Clark: “You and me are unstoppable”
  • Lois Lane has a masterclass, chapter 7, “When you hit a wall, trust your gut and retrace your steps and go back to the beginning”
  • “You’re such a dork.” “yeah that’s why you love me”
  • Loooooved the “hey boys we gotta talk” super hearing moment
  • It’s great how everyone is respectful of Clark and then Clark “gives the people what they want.” - that’s some real Superman shit there.
  • Amanda calling Luthor “babe” is so cringe. You know he hates that.
  • He pronounced it, “Luthor CORE” - I knew it!
    • Luthor is doing a manipulative power move
  • Oh yes, I love that they’re using the Fortress VR video game system
    • Is this supposed to played for comedy?
  • MANHEIM! YES!
    • This is a very well acted scene
    • Manheim has pull in the joint, this meeting has been VERY long
    • Very good stuff with Cheryl’s back story with Luthor
    • Manheim with the ultimate babyface turn, “I’m glad Superman’s back”
  • I’m sorry the computer room is so cliche
  • Interesting hearing about the power lever of Superman. ANd his sons’ power level. Love that he got a good scene with Lara, they haven’t had a moment like this since she debuted
  • I need to know more about Milton Fine. Like where is he from? Why does he hate Superman?
  • “You need to figure out what Jordan and jonathan can’t do and what they can”
    • This is Lois’s show
  • Jon: “Do you like, need a hug?”
    • Oh hell yes, Superboys vs Superman.
  • So Lex’s endgame is revenge on Smallville?
    • This is an amazing scene with Lex and Amanda
    • Lex put on the suit but it’s not green and purple
  • SHIRT RIP!
  • So Doomsday has fire breath?
  • Ohhhh Jordan’s power is his empathy. Looooove.
    • This is the best Jordan has been all season.
    • His strength isn’t being sad and mopey, it’s quirky and sweet.
    • Oh hell yes, Jonathan catching a car like his dad, with his own theme music?
  • Lex’s inside computer is Purple and Green
  • INCREDIBLE CLIFFHANGER!

EPISODE 8 - A Sharped Dressed Man - “They Are A Little Sweaty”

Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I’m Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody.

Let’s talk about Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 8 - A Sharp Dressed Man

Directed by:

Michael Kudlitz (Lex Luthor)

Written By:

Brent Fletcher and Todd Helbing

The Apple TV and Imdb description is:

Luthor challenges Lois to a live telecast debate, though not everything is as it seems; John Henry and Clark face a troubling possibility.

Henry's Notes:

  • Luthor doing an interview, fitted for suit and CLEAN SHAVEN. He looks like Lex Luthor. Great reveal
  • Milton reference again.
  • “After today the whole world will be on your side” with a Luthor smile
  • So the DOD hangs out at his house which is different than usual?
  • So now Clark doesn’t wear the glasses and I miss it!
  • Cancer call back. “They are a little sweaty”
    • This is really good. Not just pretending this story never happened. THis is what really happens in families dealing with Cancer.
    • YAY!!! Lois is Cancer free. BAZOOMBAS is back!
  • Why haven’t Nat and John Henry cleaned up their bunker?
  • Yes! Steel covering for Superman. That’s how it’s supposed to go! I love seeing Steel not just blast things but actually rescue someone.
  • TOM CAVANAGH IS G GORDON GODFREY!!!!!!
    • This is amazing. My absolute favorite guy.
  • This is great that Luthor is going on tv and spinning/lying. This is so classic. I love this. Oh my god, even spinning why he brought Lexcorp to Smallville.
  • Clark is right trying to get Lois not take the bait. I like that he had a solution and not just a don’t do it. “Let’s go to the office”
  • “Now that everybody knows I can fly”
  • Candice broke up with Jonathan and my reaction was “haha good.”
    • While I don’t care that much about Candice, the reason she broke up with Jonathan makes sense. But I definitely don’t care about a rom-com last second confession of love
    • “I’m the Costanza of relationships”
  • So Amanda is in love with Lex. There’s precedence for unrequited love with Lex. I’m dying to know who MILTON is. At this point they won’t stop talking about Milton.
  • “Feels like we’re working in a fishbowl”
  • What do you think about Lois’ thing being not only the spelling thing but she swears in her writing?
  • “We flew here together”
  • Interesting that Clark is losing his hearing.
    • Do you think the series will end with Clark losing all his powers, being a regular guy and the boys taking over?
    • Oh that’s really interesting that he has heart disease.
    • Clark now has basically what Lois had last season.
  • Is Luthor just absolutely disgusted with humanity? Or does he have some heightened senses or something? His spidey sense is tingling.
  • Do Lois and Amanda have history?
  • Love hearing Tom Cavanagh say, “Superman, Superman”
    • I love that he did the glasses bit.
  • Lois is on defense, this is a set up duh.
  • “I think the circumstances speak for themselves”
  • Why are they obsessed with Jaimie Kennedy the mid-2000s comedian who maybe also had a prank show?
  • “It’s being a carnival barker”
  • Brainiac time baby. Now we’re getting into the endgame. Will we get the full blown version? It’s kind of weird that we’ve never seen this guy before and now he’s an ultimate mastermind.
    • This is an amazing action sequence. Love the heat vision from both sides. That was nuts
  • Superman keeps his wedding ring on now. Nice touch.
  • Confirmed and canonical in this show that the ONLY way they got news about Superman was from Lois?
  • Damn, Godfrey just made an enemy in Lois Lane.
  • Sexy Lexy
  • Lex Luthor ISN’T a computer genius
  • “Mr. Gorman from our world” - That’s a GUS GORMAN reference from Superman III. God I love this show.
  • So Superman, is “terminal.”
    • Great shot of the family together at the table
  • If Milton is going to be taken seriously, we’ve gotta get some back story and motivation.
  • “Now that’s a killer suit” - they better paint it green and purple otherwise what’s the point.
  • Is Superman dying or is it that his powers are failing?

EPISODE 7 - A Regular Guy - “You’d Be Surprised What A Pair Of Glasses Will Do”

Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I’m Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody.

Let’s talk about Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 7 - A Regular Guy

Directed by:

Gregory Smith

Written By:

Katie Aldrin

George Kitson

The Apple TV and Imdb description is:

After some concerning interactions in town, Clark is determined to protect the secret that he's Superman - a task complicated by Jonathan and Jordan; Lois considers the future of the Gazette after Chrissy proposes something drastic.

HENRY'S NOTES:

  • FLASHBACK TO FIRST APPEARANCE ACTION #1!!!
  • 2 Shirt rips!
  • I am here once again, saying that I don’t care about Kyle and Christy and this a waste of screentime.
  • This is weird watching Clark pretend to be hurt. I don’t like it. It’s awkward.
  • Jimmy! And his sister? I like that Jimmy asked to be “pals” of course. And great reference to the “Daily Star.” But he called him “CK”
  • Haha, “Timmy.” Where did this guy come from? Is he from last season?
    • “You’ve ruined my life kent” - really? I thought he gets to be QB because Jon isn’t doing it.
  • I dunno, why is selling her share of the Gazette so dramatic. Seems pretty practical to me.
  • Haha Clark actually bunted. This show has everything. Clark Kent playing baseball with Jimmy Olson. It’s all I ever wanted and I’m so sad it’s over.
  • Timmy Ryan is the dumbest name
  • “Candice knows” - “YOU TOLD YOUR GIRLFRIEND!” lol
  • “Cut your dad some slack”
  • “We need the bunt king” - What do we think of this Jimmy?
  • So Jimmy figured out the secret. Ok fine. So what do we think about in this universe Clark is just either very bad at keeping the secret OR everyone is not dumb
  • Nice of Clark and Lois to buy Chrissy out and IDC
  • “Did I get knocked up by the town bully?”
  • Nice of Kyle to raise a toast to the Kents etc but he didn’t actually apologize to Clark
  • I like the mirroring of the last time Candice’s dad got fucked up in the diner by Clark.
  • Very interesting way for Superman to reveal himself to the world. I don’t know how I feel about it
    • “When Emmet fired the bullet it made me think maybe this is doing more harm than good. ...It has to be a family decision.”
  • “You’ve fought aliens and stopped world’s from merging” - Crisis?
  • “I’m just a regular guy”
  • The Daily Planet won the “Metro Cup” and “Last one at Bibbowski’s picks up the tab”
  • Jimmy: “I missed you too pal”
  • This was a very well done episode with a plot that I don’t like

EPISODE 6 - When the Lights Come On - “Stop Worrying About Your Hair”

Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I’m Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody.

Let’s talk about Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 6 - When The Lights Come On

Directed by:

Ian Samoil

Written By:

Kristi Korzec (Teleplay)

Brent Fletcher (Story)

The Apple TV and Imdb description is:

Luthor plans to move LuthorCorp to Smallville, but finds opposition in Lana; Sarah faces a difficult decision; Clark confronts Luthor face-to-face.

HENRY'S NOTES:

  • Luthor temper tantrum. I dunno, I know this was supposed to seem intense but it was just silly to me and it made me laugh.
  • Luthor confirms he has an endgame as he gazes on the Gazette
  • Fun that Jon is doing the superhero thing and I like that mom and dad finally told Jordan to get a job
  • Salt and Pepper patch in his hair (Love that) - it’s funny because Tyloer has a lot of gray in his beard and it looks awesome. Do you think this is a Superman thing or a regular middle aged vanity thing? Interesting that he’s concerned about Superman going gray when every comic book reader knows he looks great with some gray
  • Luthor vs Gretchen is a great face off
  • Funny that Jon has the Wally West eating thing. Especially because traditionally Superman doesn’t need to eat.
  • Ok so now the coach knows the secret and it’s played for comedy? But “Aidy” knows too. They’re definitely going for the “town knows and is protecting him” thing. Lois and Clark don’t even seem that concerned.
    • I’m starting to come around on it because of the way the town is reacting to Luthor.
  • Lana going toe to toe with Luthor is A+
  • I take exception to Sara calling Luthor a “bald headed loser” as if those two things were connected. To quote Larry David, “that’s a hate crime, we’re a group.”
  • Sara wants to go abroad in high school? I mean not unheard of but seems odd.
  • Nice Varsity Blues reference
  • Lana getting beat up by Luthor is spot on. Love that Sarah fucked Otis up with a baseball bat. Good idea Kyle putting bats under beds.
  • Clark vs Lex, let’s go. Lex grabbed a red sun inhibitor. Good idea. Unhinged Tyler is new and I love seeing this range from him. Let’s go Clark. Beat his ass. Who taught Clark how to fight?! I’m sorry that was a really cool fight scene. Loved seeing that side of Clark/Tyler.
  • Full Mortal Combat
  • Has Sarah ever flown with the boys before?
  • “Get you a killer suit” with a great pull out shot and tease of the Lexcorp building.

  • Bizarro world, Bizarro is a cat guy because Clark is a dog guy!!!!???
  • Did Bizarro breathe in kryptonite?
  • The Yellow sun weakens him, looks like the Bizarro world has a red sun
  • Why wasn’t the Kent farm house reversed?
  • Shirtless Clark, pantsless Lois thirst trap
  • 20 years sam lane never had a problem with Superman
  • Glad Anderson is alone in his Superman hate and that America likes superman
  • “The Fraternals”
  • What the hell kind of coach calls a kid’s cell phone
  • “Dude, you’re starting tonight?!” I LOVE CLARK
  • Really enjoy seeing Superman in broad daylight at Arlington with soldiers and the flag and a brighter costume and people trusting SUPERMAN and not Gen Anderson.
  • Great shot of Superman flying over white background and I love a good super feat over a natural disaster. Great use of super breath and heat vision. Weird seeing Superman in Russia and speaking Russian.
  • Does Lucy know Clark is Superman?
  • I’m a sports fan, I enjoy football when I watch but I just don’t relate to the yelling, toxic masculine, coach fired up pep talks.
  • Wait so last episode the bartender was in love with Kyle and was willing to ruin his life by showing up at the quinceanera, but now she’s sorry and is clear headed about it?
  • Wait, why does red solar light hurt Superman? Shouldn’t it just make him human/dampen his powers? Was the scene of Superman fighting the soldiers that was just like Bizarro at the beginning reversed? If not, why not?
  • I weirdly feel bad for Kyle now. Am I supposed to?
