This week, Perry is joined by video editor and writer Eddie Thomson of Why We Watch to discuss 2015's Ant-Man! We discuss the long road this movie took to getting made, from Edgar Wright's long involvement in the project, switching over to Adam McKay and eventually landing in the hands of Peyton Reed. We also talk about how the heist film aspect helps set this apart from the rest of the MCU and why not every movie needs to end in some world-ending threat.

Before the MCU showed how Captain America can be done right, other studios showed us how to do it wrong. Writer Geoffrey Golden is the guest this week to discuss Albert Pyun's 1990 Captain America film starring the son of JD Salinger. We discuss the terrible costumes, the strange choices (including the very bizarre change of the Red Skull from German to Italian), and about Cap's carjacking super power.

You don't get to the MCU without first going through Spider-Man 2. In this episode, Derick McDuff of the Underrated podcast joins to have a look back at what is still considered one of the best superhero movies ever. We talk about what still holds up really well, like Peter Parker balancing his personal life with his web-slinging, the standout performances from Molina and Franco, and some things that don't hold up, like the treatment of Mary Jane. Also, we discuss some of the tropes this film helped cement that still appear in superhero movies to this day.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

It began as an excuse to talk to my friend, Derrick Ferguson, every week. But after he passed away, listeners encouraged me to keep it going and I've been having a lot of fun with a variety of different guests discussing all manner of superhero movies.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

A greater appreciation of the diversity of superhero movies. As much as I love the MCU, that's just one part of the sheer amount of superhero movies out there. I also hope people will take another look at movies they may have written off before—sometimes, these movies are better than we remember (and sometimes they're even worse).

Which episode should someone start with?

Honestly, that's up to you. I suggest maybe starting with episodes focused on movies you already love (or hate). Maybe we'll talk about something you never realized or motivate you to give a movie you thought you hated a second chance. And check out some of the episodes about movies you've never heard of before. You might discover a hidden gem.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

It's impossible to pick. So much of it depends on the guest. If I've got a guest I have a great rapport with, then the episode is like magic. The best way to figure out which episodes those are would be to see which guests have appeared on multiple episodes—usually that's because I want to talk with them.

Which episode are you most proud of?

Again, impossible to pick. But I'm particularly proud of the topic episodes we did, such as about superheroes and politics, the secret identity trope, and the role of romance in superhero stories. These were fun conversations that allowed us to look under the hood of some of these tropes we take for granted.

What is your vision for your show?

To eventually reach the point where I've covered every superhero film ever made and to hopefully encourage people to check out some of these movies.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

In the comic book/superhero podcasting space, that would have to be Digging For Kryptonite. It's a wonderful show if you're a Superman fan (or if you're curious about understanding why Superman fans like the character so much).

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

We originally wanted to call it Superhero Cinema, but someone else had spoken for that name. Although ironically enough, we've lasted a lot longer than they did.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm an author, a comic creator, a lover of film, and a lifelong fan of comics and superheroes.
