Superduperstitious - Episode 91 – Rat King Cole
play

12/21/19 • 67 min

Finally, an episode in December! Is it any surprise that it’s about cryptids?

After a lengthy but important update on the Phantom of the Chicago, Wyatt kicks off with the tale of Zana, a supposed ape woman held captive in the most difficult to pronounce reaches of the 19th-century Western Caucasus. Was she really a bipedal ape creature, or were these people just HOLY SHIT THE MOST RACIST MONSTERS IMAGINABLE? Could the answer possibly be anything BUT the latter?

Jake then gets German with the Rat King, a ball o’ rat phenomenon believed to occur all the damned time. But are rats REALLY as gross as people want to believe? And are they that bad at being alive and not fusing together? FOLLOW THE MONEY.

Don’t let the stats from the time of recording fool you: take it from America’s 225th most popular Natural Sciences podcast, Superduperstitious!

Things were feeling just TOO SANE around here, so it’s once again conspiracy time on Superduperstitious!

Following a few words from some podcast pals, Jake leads in with a story he thought had been put to bed, but which instead proved to be decidedly still up and about and wanting a glass of water and a midnight snack and SOME ANSWERS, DAMN IT. How did the 2008 appearance of a dead raccoon on a beach on Long Island cause over a decade of freaking out? Because it looked weird and it was in Montauk — what more reason do you need?

Then, after a mandated segment of drinking godawful cocktails, Wyatt tells the story of David Icke, former footballer and conspiracy theorist extraordinaire. Yep, he’s the “lizard people control the world” guy. Yep, a whole damned lot of people believe his stuff. The least we can do is see what he’s on about!

This week is full of reptilian royals, Montauk monsters, secret cover-ups, and The Unbearable Icke-ness of Being. Are you happy now, Collin?! It’s time for Superduperstitious!

Superduperstitious - Episode 67 – Sadventure Time
play

05/23/19 • 57 min

We all make mistakes. They don’t always involve depleting all breathable oxygen from a living space or disappearing forever into the jungle, but still. Accordingly, this ep is all about science mistakes!

After a buzzy update from Cuba/Wyatt, Jake tells the tale of the ambitious but ill fated Biosphere 2, an early ’90s experiment (read “publicity stunt”) that actually could have been really cool. Sadly, a lack of adequate technical consideration kept the habitat from realizing its full potential, and that’s how you get ants. And cockroaches. And almost suffocate everybody.

Wyatt then takes us back in time to the antics of Percy Fawcett, who simply couldn’t get enough of that tasty, tasty Amazon rain forest. So much so that he is STILL THERE TO THIS DAY. He may have brought back numerous reports of patently ridiculous animals, and vanished while searching for the so called Lost City of Z, but at least he wasn’t secretly doing something WEIRD, like attempting to help humankind ascend to a higher plane by initiating with transdimensional beings... right? Also, Jake and Wyatt discuss the key differences between poison and venom, and their plans for an upcoming stage play production.

Stick your hand in a thresher and give your son to the Earth Guardians as we venture into this week’s episode of Superduperstitious!

Superduperstitious - Episode 49 – [Elk bugling intensifies]
play

11/22/18 • 58 min

If we know one thing at Superduperstitious, it’s that animals are weird. They act weird, sometimes they look weird, and frequently they sound weird. So imagine how weird CRYPTIDS must sound! Or just listen to this episode, because that’s what it’s about.

But first, it’s another update on that pesky Midwestern bat thing, the Phantom of the Chicago! The saga seemingly never ends, to the point where the boys may just have to take matters into their own hands.

After that, however, you’d better believe there are some spooky forest sounds afoot, and Knightsbridge Consulting is here to take care of them! Travel with Jake to British Columbia, routinely insist on calling a town by the incorrect name, and maybe, just maybe, track down the creature behind all this. At the very least, aim to briefly look like Ziggy Stardust.

Wyatt rounds out the ep with a series of crazy and creepy animal sounds from around the world, to show just how easy it would be for your imagination to run wild in the woods at night. He also revisits Awee Kids for a series of increasingly questionable animal sound demonstrations. Beat up some hunters and watch out for sky whales — spooky sounds await you on Superduperstitious!

Superduperstitious - Episode 117 – Readings from the Korndämonenomicon
play

09/27/20 • 49 min

Autumn: a thing that happens, as far as we know, every single year. North of the Equator, it’s happening RIGHT NOW. This episode is about that!

After a classic and arguably needless SDS PSA, Wyatt explains the German tradition of Feldgeister (“field spirits”), also known as Korndämonen. These corn demons are believed to be responsible for the wellbeing of each field’s crops, so you’d best respect them or you might get beaten with some boobs.

Next, Jake rattles off a series of ghostly encounters from followers of the blog GaijinPot. Which of these readers can prove themselves to be THE MOST INTO JAPAN? And how relevant to the week’s theme even is this entire segment?

Embrace the fall spirit, make it into a doll, and summon forth this episode from the thickest air available (the internet) to join in for another week of Superduperstitious!

A solid 78 episodes after their first foray into far flung frights, the boys are once again exploring mysterious locations. Wyatt then takes us all on a road trip! Where to? Some roads, of course! The most haunted in the U.S., if this highly esteemed car rental blog is to be believed. Buckle in and find out if this spookometer really goes all the way up to 5, baby.

If those horrifying creatures creeping down out of the woods by your house get to be too much, accelerate your car to at least 230 mph and join in for an all-new Superduperstitious!

Superduperstitious - Episode 107 – Preventative Measures
play

05/16/20 • 60 min

Sometimes, pseudoscience and conspiracy theories are just some goofy, harmless fun. This is not one of those times.

Today’s episode is all about giving due diligence to some big names in fringe medical “science” whose dangerous misinformation has caused lasting harm. Meet Andrew Wakefield, the British former doctor who is the sole reason anyone has ever believed in a link between vaccines and autism. How did he reach that conclusion? By lying. For money. Joining him is Judy Mikovits, retrovirus enthusiast who decided to yes-and Wakefield’s work by linking vaccines not only with autism, but with CFS and just about every imaginable cancer, too. Her secret? Also lying.

It’s a fraud free-for-all, with some helpful vax facts to boot — all on this week’s Superduperstitious!

Listener stories are always welcome at Superduperstitious, but not without raising the immortal question: are these stories GOOD?

Listener Nick Smith kindly provides a pair of personal accounts of the spooky, so Wyatt and Jake kindly provide feedback on their quality, since that’s what Nick was surely wanting. And they of course achieve this by comparing to some top notch stories from the Website of Only Good Writing, Reddit!

Wyatt begins by revisiting sleep paralysis. From ticked off Anubises to cuckolding ghosts, this segment’s got it all. Jake then goes Full PedanticTM with grammar as he looks into some haunted house happenings. NOTHING is more terrifying than verb/subject agreement.

Strap in for some good listening, and consider sending your own tales to [email protected]!
